At the age of 10, in 2002, Wu Mingfei received a gift from his mother: a
book about pretty paintings on walls in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, Gansu
Province. This gift made him love painting and dream of seeing the caves one
day.

When he was 25, Wu, from Sichuan in Southwest China, finally made the
trip to Dunhuang. He said, “The paintings on the walls were more amazing than
those in the book. That was when I knew I wanted to stay here.”
Now Wu has an art workshop in Dunhuang, where he recreates the wall
paintings on special boards. This allows visitors to have the chance to
experience a bit of the caves’ magic.
“When people breathe in the caves, they make the harmful air to the
paintings. Only a few caves are open to the public because we need to keep
them safe,” Wu said.“People can’t take pictures or stay inside for long.”

The paintings in Dunhuang are known for their bright colours. They use
colours from rocks that have stayed pretty for centuries. However, because of
the high cost, Wu mostly uses common paints for his art. But he also shows
art with rock colours in special shows, so people can see how the old paintings
really look.
His workshop has become a popular place for tourists and art lovers.
Through his art, Wu Mingfei has found a way to share the amazing art of
Dunhuang with the world.

Passage 2
One day, a girl walked into her class teacher Ms Gao’s office. After a while
of silence (沉默), she said, “Ms Gao, I don’t plan to continue with this class.”
The teacher was surprised for a moment and asked in wonder, “Why? Can you
tell me the reason?” The girl breathed heavily and said, “I always get distracted
in class. Sometimes I can’t help thinking about other things, and sometimes, I
focus too much on what others are doing. It’s hard for me to keep my eyes on
the lesson.”

and said, “I did it.”
The teacher smiled and asked, “Did you find anything unusual while you

what others were doing?” The girl was a bit surprised and replied, “No, I was
just paying attention to the glass of water, making sure no water ran out.”

Passage 3
[2025湖北武汉阶段测]Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is
not a bad thing. We can learn much from our mistakes. However, too much of it
may result in health problems. When self-criticism becomes too much, it can turn
into negative self-talk. Negative self-talk is a little voice in your head. It says
you are not good enough.
Dr Hugh, a scientist, said that some good students who studied hard usually
did not do well in a test because of negative self-talk.

Lindsay was one of Hugh’s best students. She came to class early, took part
in discussions and did all her homework. However, she did poorly in exams.
When Hugh asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very
nervous. She was not sure that she knew the right answers. This is an example
of negative self-talk. Dr Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive
questions. During a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why do I remember
everything I study for an exam? ★ Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later,
she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on
an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in
Hugh’s class.

Dr Hugh saw students work out fine with his method. And he did not just
help his students. He also advised his friends and neighbours to give up negative
self-talk in their life. He once said, “We can programme ourselves for success in
class or in life, or we can programme ourselves for failure.”
