“Kids can make a difference,” Craig Kielburger said when he was 12. Craig is now in his twenties, and he still believes it’s true. He started a group to help kids all over the world at the age of 12. The group is still going strong.
How did Craig get started? In seventh grade, he learned something that made him angry. It was about a Pakistani boy who started working in a crayon factory at the age of 4. The child worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. He couldn’t go to school or play. He had no freedom at all.
Craig compared that with his own life. Laws in Canada said that kids must go to school. Education was free to all kids. But in Pakistan, education was not free. Children from poor families went to work instead of going to school.
Feeling this was unfair, Craig and his classmates started “Free The Children”. Their goal was simple: raise money to build schools and give working children education. At first, some kids laughed at them, saying they couldn’t make real change. But Craig didn’t give up.
Today, “Free The Children” has more than one million members in 45 countries. Most of them are kids. The money they have raised has helped build more than 500 schools around the world. It also pays for health care in poor places.
Now Craig wants more kids to help. He believes every young person can make big changes. “Start small by talking to your teachers and friends. When you take action and gain more confidence (自信) others will join you. It gets easier when you work together.”

A. He wanted to become famous.
B. He wanted to travel to Pakistan.

A. dbac B. abdc C. cbad D. bdac
6. Which of the following words can best describe Craig?
A. Kind and helpful. B. Patient and shy.
C. Brave and honest. D. Hard-working and careful.

Animals grow old, just like humans. What do you think of older wild animals? Are they important to their groups? A new study has found that protecting older wild animals is very important because they have knowledge (知识) to help the rest of their populations survive (生存).
▲ When older birds have baby birds, they are better at providing food and finding a good place to live. This makes it more likely for the babies to survive. Older elephants are good at remembering which other animals are friendly and which ones aren’t. They are also better at knowing possible dangers. Grandmother orcas (killer whales) use their knowledge to help their families find food when there’s not much around.
Older animals face serious problems in some parts of the world. For example, fishing has caused the number of older fish to fall greatly (up to 97% in some populations). In some places, because poaching is common, older animals are more at risk.
The researchers from Charles Darwin University in Australia, said humans must do more to make sure that enough old animals survive. They’ve asked the International Union for Conservation of Nature (国际自然保护联盟) to help researchers come up with ways to protect those at risk. They also said that fishing companies should try to stop catching too many old fish, to protect the whole population.
8. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By telling a joke. B. By sharing a story.
C. By asking questions. D. By giving examples.
9. Which of the following can be put in the blank ▲ in Paragraph 2?

Life is always changing. Some changes can be good things, like joining a club or making a new friend. However, some changes could make you feel worried or uncertain (不确定的). They can be big things, like changing schools or losing a friend. They can be small ones, like changes in parents’ work hours or a new teacher taking over the class. All of these things can bring up some pretty big feelings and that’s OK.
Change can be hard to deal with because it often brings feelings of uncertainty. Emily Hanlon is a child psychologist (心理学家). She explains, “Our brains love daily plans and usual habits. They make us feel safe. When something changes, it can feel like going on a surprise trip without a map. This can make us feel nervous or worried because we don’t know what to expect.” Change can also be hard if you don’t feel quite ready for it or that you are not in control of whatever is happening.
Can change be a good thing? Yes, life will be pretty boring if everything stays the same all the time. Trying new things and making changes help you find out what you like and don’t like. For example, if you didn’t try that new kind of ice cream, how would you know you love it? It also helps you to grow and learn skills. Hanlon says, “While change can feel scary, it often leads to new trips, new friends, and confidence.”
12. Which of the following is a “big change” according to Paragraph 1?
A. Studying in a new school. B. Making some new friends.
C. Trying a new kind of ice cream. D. Parents’ new working time.
13. Why is change hard to deal with?
A. Because it always makes us feel bored.
B. Because it stops us from making new friends.
C. Because our brains dislike daily habits and plans.
D. Because changes make people feel uncertain and worried.
14. What does the example of “trying new ice cream” in Paragraph 3 try to show?
A. How changes help us learn new skills.
B. How we can keep healthy eating habits.
C. How we can try new things and make changes.
D. How changes help us find out what we like and dislike.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A It’s better to keep daily habits than try new things.
B. People should always welcome changes without worry.
C. While changes can be hard, they can also help us grow.
D. Changes are bad and people should try to stop the changes.

When you take action and gain more confidence (自信), others will join you. It gets easier when you work together.”
4. Why did Craig start “Free The Children”?
A. He wanted to become famous.
B. He wanted to travel to Pakistan.
C. He wanted to play with more children.
D. He wanted to help poor kids get education.
5. What is the correct order of the following activities?
a. Some kids laughed at Craig and his classmates.
b. Craig and his classmates started “Free The Children”.
c. “Free The Children” helped build more than 500 schools.
d. Craig learned a Pakistani boy started working at the age of 4.
A. dbac B. abdc C. cbad D. bdac
6. Which of the following words can best describe Craig?
A. Kind and helpful. B. Patient and shy.
C. Brave and honest. D. Hard-working and careful.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Poor Pakistani Boy B. Small Actions, Big Changes
C. Craig’s Wonderful Life D. The Importance of Education
C
A. Older animals are at risk now and their numbers fall.
B. Older animals are better at finding good places to live.
C. Older animals can help their populations in many ways.
D. There are many ways to protect endangered older animals.
10. What does the underlined word “poaching” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Feeding animals. B. Catching animals. C. Studying animals. D. Protecting animals.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To show the study of Australian researchers.
B. To discuss how animals grow old in the wild.
C To show why old animals need special protection.
D. To compare different ways of protecting animals.
D
A. It’s better to keep daily habits than try new things.
B People should always welcome changes without worry.
C. While changes can be hard, they can also help us grow.
D. Changes are bad and people should try to stop the changes.
