Passage 1
What's the new subject for you this term?Yeah, it's
chemistry. Chemistry is a subject which needs hard work. All right, let's break it
down into four easy-to-understand parts for you.
①____
5
Before a class or a test, it's good to get ready. Learn to read and understand
the periodic table (元素周期表), review your notes, and make sure you know
the key chemical patterns. It's like packing your bag for a trip—you want to
make sure you have everything you need.
②____
They are like your chemistry friends that are always there to help. They
have lots of information and examples. When you read, take your time to
understand each part. Underline important points, and if you need help, ask your
teacher or a friend to explain.
Experimenting in Labs (实验室)
Doing an experiment in a lab will help to build a stronger understanding.
When you do an experiment, you may get to see what happens when different
things mix. Also, you will get a chance to practice some scientific ways. It can
even be fun. But remember, safety is the most important, so always listen to
your teacher.
③____
Make a plan to study every day. Find a quiet place where you can focus.
Also, try studying with friends—it's funner and you can help each other out.
Chemistry is all about exploring (探索) and having fun while you learn.
So, get ready, stay safe, and enjoy your chemistry trip!

Passage 2
In a small village, a very sick girl, Maggie, was
found by the roadside. The villagers felt pity for the poor child.
“Take her to the poorhouse,” a villager suggested.
“The poorhouse is a sad place for a sick and helpless child,” answered
another.
11
They discussed for a while but still no one seemed willing to take her.
Finally, Joe Thompson, a kind man, couldn't leave Maggie behind. He
carried her home gently.
As he got home, Jane, his childless, ill-tempered (易怒的) wife, angrily
questioned, “What did you bring her here for?”
“She is too weak to walk,” replied Joe.“I will carry her to the poorhouse
tomorrow.”
“Why not get the whole thing off your hands tonight?”
“Keep this poor child for a single night, please,” begged Joe, voice
shaking, tears hidden. Jane didn't answer, but a soft feeling rose in her heart.
“Treat her nicely,” said Joe.“Think of the loneliness, pain and sadness in her
coming life.” Jane went quietly into the room where Maggie was in. Joe didn't
follow. He noticed that Jane's attitude (态度) had changed. She sat by
Maggie's bed, talking kindly to her. Maggie's eyes were fixed upon Jane. The
little girl's expression was sad yet thankful.
“What are you going to do with Maggie?” Jane asked after supper.
“You knew she was to go to the poorhouse,” replied Joe.
Jane looked strangely at Joe and her eyes dropped.
Early the next morning, Jane said to Joe, “Let's keep her a day or two
longer. She is so weak and helpless.”
Actually, Joe never thought of sending Maggie to the poorhouse. Within a
week, Jane was so kind to Maggie that she would rather live in the poorhouse
herself than send Maggie there. At the same time, Maggie brought happiness to
their lives in return. Their home was filled with laughter and love.

Passage 3
It's no secret that there is a space
problem in Manhattan. People build up higher and higher buildings
because there isn't much land left. So people have been building
lots of tall and thin buildings. Developers are trying to build higher and higher
buildings. However, the government has made laws that don't allow developers to
build too high buildings.
19
Oiio Studio thinks about things differently, “What if our buildings were not
tall but long?”So the founder of Oiio Studio,Ioannis Oikonomou, designed a
U-shaped building, the Big Bend. It would be a very thin building. It would
curve (弯曲) at the top and return to the ground. Oikonomou said he thought
of the great idea because he learned from a piece of news. It said that a
company made a lift that could travel in curves. So he designed the Big Bend.
He thought of it as “the longest building in the world”.It would be 4,000 feet
from end to end and would need a different lift system.
20
“We can't change the law, but we can change our buildings. So if we can
bend (使弯曲) our building, we would be able to build one of the most
amazing buildings in Manhattan,” Oiio Studio said.
The Big Bend is just an idea for now. Oikonomou has sent the plans to a
few companies, and is looking for developers. If successful, they will build the
Big Bend just to the south of Central Park.
21
8.Why are developers trying to build higher and higher buildings in Manhattan?
( )
D
A.Because the buildings are too low.
B.Because people enjoy tall buildings.
C.Because there are too many people.
D.Because there isn't much land left.
People build up higher and higher
buildings because there isn't much land left.”
22
9.What can we infer from the passage? ( )
C
A.No one wants to build the Big Bend.
B.The Big Bend will be very, very high.
C.They have not built the Big Bend yet.
D.We can see the Big Bend in Manhattan now.
The Big Bend is just an idea for now.”
23
10.Which of the following is the structure of the passage?( )
B
A. B. C. D.
