【听力原文】I've read a book recently. The writer is a woman. She used to be a
teacher. But two years ago, she lost her hearing and became deaf because of an
illness. She had to give up her job. At first, she couldn't accept it. But slowly,
with the care and help from the people around her, she began to carefully
consider the meaning of life. At last, she decided to continue working in the
field of education. She had an idea: to create a book. It's about how to develop
children's learning abilities. After a long time, her book came out and got popular.
Now, she has even got a new job in her community. I'm greatly encouraged by
her spirit.

December 12th
I'm so thankful we're all okay. I never imagined I'd have to go through
something as terrible as what happened yesterday. At first I thought we were
about to have just a usual rainstorm. The sky got dark and the wind picked up.
Dad came in early from the fields. Then my sister Julia said, “Look at the sky.
Doesn't it look weird?”

We went to the window and saw big black clouds. I felt afraid as the
strong wind blew up. Mom told us to run to the storm cellar. But I wanted to
go to my room to get some of my things first. Mom caught me and made me
stay with everyone else. As we ran towards the storm cellar, I saw a long,
thin cloud drop down from the sky and touch the ground. The noise grew louder,
like a train rushing straight to us. My little brother Mark started to cry. I picked
him up and carried him down the steps into the cellar.
Above us, we heard terrible sounds that seemed to go on forever. All I
could think about was losing my computer and MP3 player.

to teach my course like this. However, I decided to face it. I walked into the
classroom and announced to the students that I was wearing two shoes from
different pairs, and directed their attention to my feet. Everyone laughed and we
went on with class. Years later, a student in that class told me that this was the

moment she first thought that maybe, just maybe, she could be a professor, too.
I shared my mistake because I realized that trying to hide it would have a bad
influence on my ability to focus my mind on my teaching—but I had no idea
that it would also help shorten the psychological distance (心理距离) between
my students and me.
In many cases, people may be punished or feel ashamed for making
mistakes. We try to avoid them because of our desires for success, and we care
how others will respond to our mistakes. We might make self-criticism
(自我批评) and feel guilty (内疚的).

However, mistake-making is part of learning new things, and it can draw us
closer to others. It opens up the possibility of accepting mistakes gladly, letting
us be more open and pay more attention to what we are doing.
We can say words of kindness and self-pity to ourselves. Mistakes are
natural and human. We can be kind to ourselves for this mistake and still try to
do better next time. Noticing our own imperfections can help us to be kind to
others when we notice they are imperfect, too. When we deal with our mistakes
in this way, they can become chances for us to open up to others, learn about
ourselves, and connect even more with what matters to us.

Life is full of the unexpected. No one knows what will happen tomorrow. A
very strong earthquake, with a magnitude (震级) of 6.8, hit Morocco on the
night of Sept. 8, 2023. At that time, Sam was away from his family home in
the small town of Tamaloukte, near the epicenter (震中) of the earthquake. He
hurried back home through the broken buildings that covered the roads.

When he arrived, he found that his house was completely broken apart.
Sam's father, Mohamed, was trying very hard to save his three grandchildren who
were still inside. Sadly, two of Sam's three children—his 11-year-old daughter,
Asma, and 5-year-old son, Ibrahim, died.
“I was sleeping at home when the earthquake hit. Later a neighbor told me
that my second house where the grandchildren lived had fallen down, so I
hurried to save them but found them under the fallen building. The roof came
down while they were inside,” Mohamed explained.

Asma and Ibrahim are among the 47 people who lost their lives in the
earthquake in Tamaloukte.
Volunteers provided Sam's family with a tent, warm clothes, and food to
help them live through the first part of the disaster (灾难). The people from
an organization also helped Sam's family as they dealt with their huge loss.
In the face of disasters, it's impossible to bring back what people have lost,
but offering a hand in time will help the families rebuild their lives. The help is
just the first step for a family to get better after an earthquake.

One possible version:
Life is full of the unexpected!
Last weekend, I decided to visit my aunt. When I got to the train station, I
checked the timetable and found my train had already left five minutes ago. I
was so worried that I didn't know what to do. Suddenly, a policeman saw me
stand there helplessly and asked me what had happened. I told him that I missed
my train. To my surprise, he told me that the train didn't leave because it broke
down. It would leave in one hour. I had enough time to catch it.
Life is really full of the unexpected.
