Passage 1
[2024江苏徐州中考]The police have many ways of catching criminals.
One way of catching them is by fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is the study of the
patterns on our fingertips. We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly
the same for hundreds of years. However, it wasn't until 1910 that the first
criminal in the USA was convicted (被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence.
Early on the morning of September 19, 1910, Hiller's wife noticed that the
light which they usually left on was off. When Hiller went to find out what was
happening, he saw a stranger at the top of the stairs.
5
The stranger had broken in and wanted to steal. Hiller and the stranger started to
fight, but the stranger had a gun. He shot Hiller twice and ran away.
Hiller's wife ran to Hiller when she heard the gunshots but found him dead.
So she called the police. Soon after, the police caught Thomas Jennings, not far
from the Hillers' house.
The only problem was no one saw the criminal. However, the police had
started using fingerprinting at that time. According to Hiller's wife, only several
hours before Hiller's death, he had painted some wood near the kitchen window.
Then the police checked the wood completely and found some fingerprints in the
wet paint.
During the trial (审判), the police proved that the fingerprints belonged to
Jennings, and he was convicted of Hiller's murder. Since then, fingerprinting has
helped in the conviction of hundreds of thousands of criminals.

Passage 2
[2024四川乐山中考]Have you ever thought about what goes into making
a cartoon?Or maybe there is a famous cartoon from another country you like to
watch in Chinese? But how do you change the language to Chinese? This is
something called dubbing (配音).To dub means adding sounds or words in a
new language to a movie, radio or TV show. Dubbing is usually done to make it
easier for people in another country to understand a movie or a show.
For me, I've had experience dubbing TV shows and cartoons from Chinese
into English. I've done dubbing for many kinds of shows, such as love stories,
13
kung fu movies, documentaries (纪录片) and more. However, my favourite
ones to dub are cartoons. That's because with cartoons I can use many different
kinds of voices, such as high ones for good guys and low ones for bad guys.
Two of my favourite cartoons that I've dubbed were called A Hundred Birds
Paying Homage to the Phoenix (《百鸟朝凤》) and The Foolish Old Man
Who Removes the Mountains (《愚公移山》).
In the first cartoon, I got to play a silly and very proud but well-meaning
blackbird. In the second cartoon, I played both the main hero named Qingfeng
and the main bad guy named Mountain Spirit Zheng.
The hardest part was not reading the written words. But it was acting out
(将……演出来) the voices while matching the actions at the same time. Still,
it was really fun voicing all of these different roles!
If you enjoy making different voices, then I highly suggest that you try
dubbing at least once.

Passage 3
[2024广东广州中考]
I don't believe it!I'm still sitting here writing my paper. I've had two weeks
to prepare and write it and I need to hand it in tomorrow. A month ago, I
made a decision to never leave things to the last minute. Well, I've failed. I've
also been trying to go running to get fitter with my classmates after school for
four weeks. But I really feel it's difficult to follow my plan now. Why is it so
hard to break a bad habit and form a good one?
21
I've just read an article and I've discovered that it isn't my problem! In fact,
it's our brains. Our brains are programmed to make it difficult to break bad
habits. Research shows when we do something the same way repeatedly, our
brain notices. It's just like, “Oh, writing a paper is hard. We still have time. We
can relax for now?Got it!” If we always do things like that, we get “into the
habit” of leaving things to the last minute. We may even get a reward
(奖励) from this bad habit, at least at first. Our brain may say, “Ah,
relaxation!I like this!” Slowly, it seems that we can't stop doing the habit or
control it. Maybe it's because we don't know how to get the rewards without
doing it.
22
But that's not all. Scientists have also discovered that it takes ten weeks to
form a good habit. That's because ten weeks is the amount of time the brain
needs to change and accept a new habit as part of everyday life. The good
news is that once you make it to ten weeks, everything becomes a lot easier.
The bad news is that ten weeks is a really long time, so you may give up
your plan sooner.
23
So there you are. Maybe we want to change our ways and become better
people, but our brains won't let us. Or is this just an excuse?Look—I've
finished my paper on time!Anything is possible!
