[2025广东深圳月考]Confucius was a master of thinking. He
came up with many great ideas. But what's the most well-known
and influential one? That may be the idea of “the golden mean
(zhongyong in Chinese)”.Have you heard of it?Do you know its real meaning?
In fact, the golden mean is an interesting topic. In Confucianism (儒学), it
is seen as an important virtue (美德).Confucius spoke highly of it.
However, it is easily misunderstood. People often think it means not
working hard. The key point of the golden mean is to keep balance, neither too

little nor too much. The character zhong means to be moderate
(不极端的).And yong means to be common and unchanging. This way of
thinking is useful in our daily life.
For example, when we write a story, we shouldn't use too many excellent
words. But it doesn't mean we can't use any beautiful language in the story.
Also, when we are exercising, we can't do too much every time or we
might get hurt. But it doesn't mean we should never exercise.

[2025广东广州期中·改编]Many people believe that light bulbs were
invented by Thomas Edison. Is that true?
Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio.In school, Edison was often
absent-minded (心不在焉的), and his teacher did not think that he was very
smart. In 1854, his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, where young Edison
sold candy and newspapers on trains. These early sales experiences led Edison to

Edison started his career in Newark, New Jersey. During his first public
demonstration (展示) of his incandescent light (白炽灯) bulb in 1879, he
said, “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles.”
Light bulbs were not the only things Edison worked on. He also built the first
industrial research laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. There, Edison and his
assistant worked on the telephone, the phonograph (留声机), and the electric
lighting.
However, Edison did not invent many of the things he is said to have
invented. He only improved them so that they could be sold to the public.

名校题[2025辽宁沈阳市南昌初级中学期中]Deng Jiaxian was a Chinese
physicist, known as the “Father of China's Atomic Bomb (原子弹)”.Born in
Anhui Province, Deng attended the National Southwestern Associated University
in 1941 and went to America for further study in physics. He studied a lot and
got much useful knowledge.
After Deng's graduation, he didn't accept the high-paid positions and superb
research conditions provided by the American government or universities. Instead,
he returned to Beijing in 1950 to work on nuclear research (核能研究).

Deng faced great difficulties at that time because there was no such research
information to learn from and few scientists. He worked with a group of college
graduates and used abacuses for calculation. It took about a month to finish a
stage of calculation and about a year to calculate it nine times.
For about 28 years Deng worked very hard at the nuclear testing site in
Northwest China.
In October 1964, under Deng's leadership, China successfully tested its first
atomic bomb. In June 1967, China's first hydrogen bomb test was also carried
out successfully. In 1979, a parachute failure happened during one experiment,

which caused a bomb to drop to the ground but it did not go off. Deng knew
the danger.“You are young; you can't go to do this,” Deng said to his colleagues.
So he picked up the broken pieces of the bomb himself.
Deng's wife, a doctor, learnt that Deng had touched the broken pieces of the
bomb and ordered him to return to check his body. The results showed that he
had been badly hurt by deadly nuclear radiation. However, he still chose to
return to the testing site and continued to solve the problem himself.
In 1986, at the age of 62, Deng passed away because of the radiation. As a
national hero, he was awarded the “Two Bombs and One Satellite Merit Medal”
in 1999.
