Interview with Kellen McMahan, Age 9, who set up “Kellen’s Campaign for Belonging”
Kellen, what made you start this campaign (运动) and how did you begin?
Kellen: It all started when I saw a classmate sitting alone after class. I realized how important it is for everyone to feel included. First I talked to my parents and teacher, because when you have a good idea, adults can help make it happen. We started small by
making “You Belong Here!” buttons (徽章) with my class.
How did you make and pass the buttons onto your whole school?
Kellen: My classmates and I designed colorful paper circles with good messages. We used a special machine to turn them into real buttons—over 400 of them! Then we visited every classroom to hand them out. It took a lot of work, but seeing everyone’s smiles made it meaningful.
▲
Kellen: I see kids wearing the buttons every day, and teachers say students are being more inclusive. The best part is noticing classmates who used to play alone now joining in games. One boy told me his button reminds (提醒) him he’s important when he’s feeling shy.
What’s next for your campaign?
Kellen: We’re planning a “Buddy Bench” for the playground where kids can meet new friends. This experience taught me that kindness can spread—when you help one person feel included, it spreads to others. Everyone is special and they should feel like they are not alone.

(Arrietty’s voice as she came into the house for the first time. “My name is Arrietty. This is my story. I’m 14 years old. I’m tiny. My family and I live under the floorboards of a house. We call ourselves ‘Borrowers’. We borrow things to survive—just little things, nothing that no one would miss...”)
Moonlight shone through the cracks (缝) in the floor. Dad checked his rope made from human hair. “Stay close,” he told Arrietty. The young borrower girl held her thimble pin (顶针) tightly. Her hands were cold but sweaty.
They climbed up through narrow holes in the wall. Dust flew like tiny stars in the moonlight. Under the big kitchen table, Arrietty saw something amazing—a sugar cube shining like a white mountain. “Too dangerous here,” Dad whispered, tying his rope to a chair leg.
While Dad filled his nut-shell bag with tea leaves, Arrietty smelled something sweet. She followed the smell to the garden door. Looking through the keyhole, she saw giant dandelions shining yellow in the moonlight. A spider’s web hung nearby, with water drops bigger than her head.
(Tom arrived at the house, noticing something magical)
“Hello?”
Arrietty froze. A huge blue eye filled the keyhole! She fell back, dropping her pin.
“I’m Tom,” said the human boy softly. He pushed a colorful stamp through the gap. “For you.”
Dad held Arrietty’s arm just as the cook’s heavy footsteps shook the floor. “Never talk to humans!” he shouted. But that night, Arrietty returned quietly.
Tom waited with an acorn cup. “Try this honey,” he smiled. As Arrietty ate the sweet golden drops, she told him about borrowers’ life—using buttons as plates, postage stamps as paintings. Tom wrote notes in his book.
Days later the cook found Tom’s notes. “MICE!” she screamed, waving a poison (毒药) bag. “We’ll kill them all!”
(Arrietty watched through a crack as the cook waved poison powder everywhere. Dad’s hands couldn’t stop shaking)
Dad packed their things—a button suitcase, thimble cups. “We leave tonight.” Arrietty looked through the keyhole one last time. Tom stood there sadly, holding their empty acorn cup. She touched the stamp he gave her, its colors bright in the moonlight.

People have been facing the problem of finding clean energy for a long time. More than a hundred years ago, people started placing turbines (涡轮) in rivers. The moving water turned the turbine and produced power. More recently, companies have begun using the power of the wind to provide electrical (电的) energy. Both of them avoid the use of fossil fuels (石油燃料) and help build a cleaner environment.
In the past few years, however, another energy can be chosen on the coasts of the United States. People there now want to use the power of the rise and fall of ocean water each day. Like wind power, tidal power provides a very clean energy.
Wind comes and goes and there is no way to control it. Tidal power is predictable (可预测的) and it happens every day. People know exactly when the tide will come in and go out.
In some ways, tidal turbines are very similar to those used to make electricity from wind. For example, both types of turbine must have a very heavy foundation (地基). Wind turbines need them because they are very tall and might fall over in high winds. Tidal turbines need them because they are placed in narrow openings on the ocean floor. In these places, the force of the moving water is very strong.
In other ways, the two types of turbines are quite different. The blades (桨叶) of a tidal turbine must be much stronger than those of a wind turbine. A company called Verdant Energy built some model turbines for its project in New York City’s East River. When they put the turbines into the river, the blades broke off at once. The company had to design new, stronger blades before the project could continue.
34. What can we learn about tidal power according to the text?
A. Tidal power is cheap to produce. B. Tidal power works in any place.
C. Tidal power doesn’t need turbines. D. Tidal power needs stronger blades.
35. The following sentence can be best placed at the beginning of ________.
However, it does have one big advantage (优势) over wind power.
A. Para 2 B. Para 3 C. Para 4 D. Para 5
36. How is the passage organized?
A. By explaining events in time order.
B. By offering problems and advice.
C. By describing two different types of energy.
D. By describing the use of fossil fuels.
37. Which is the best title of this passage?
A. The History of Clean Energy
B. Fossil Fuels vs. Clean Energy
C. How Turbines Work in Rivers and Oceans
D Tidal Energy: A Better Choice Than Wind Power?

Days later, the cook found Tom’s notes.

A Tidal power is cheap to produce.
D. Tidal Energy: A Better Choice Than Wind Power?

In Kibaha, near the capital Dares Salaam, architects (建筑师) built a new village called Hope Village with “earth printing”. The project was finished in February, 2025.

It is a 3D-printed design, and it is used as a school hall and dining hall during the week and open to the public for events at weekends.
The walls are 3D printed with earth so they can be 100% recycled. “We wanted to make sure that we’re able to build walls that could circulate (循环) air in the building, but also bring in light at the same time, and turning to 3D printing allowed for an open, ‘porous’ (多孔的) wall design.” said Mark, the lead designer from CHC.

【答案】例文
Dear all,
The theme of China’s World Environment Day 2025 is “Beautiful China, My action”. Protecting our environment is everyone’s responsibility because a healthy planet means cleaner air, safer water, and a brighter future for all living things. Pollution not only harms nature but also affects our health, so we must take action now.
There are many ways to help in daily life. We can save energy by turning off lights and electronics when not in use. We should reduce waste by recycling paper, plastic, and metal, and by using reusable bags instead of plastic ones. Planting trees or choosing to walk or bike instead of driving can also make a big difference.
