Your host for this show. The name of today’s story is The Red Book.  OK, I’ll just explain some words that are in today’s story first. When you put a lot of things together, you make a pile. A leaf, and the plural is leaves, L-E-A-V-E-S. A leaf is a small green thing that grows on trees. If you want to move something, you push it. For example, if you want to open a heavy door, you will need to push it. OK, so listen and enjoy! One day, a girl called Gemma was walking home from school. It was a very windy day in autumn. Gemma walked through piles of leaves. The wind pushed Gemma and she could only walk slowly and she felt cold. Gemma was almost home, but then she saw something under the tree. At first, she thought it was a very red leaf. She pushed away the leaves and saw the thing was a red book. Gemma picked up the book and put it in her bag. Maybe it belonged to someone at school and she could give it back. When she got home, she opened the red book and she started reading. A If I ask you to close your eyes and give you a piece of apple to eat, will you be able to tell me what it is just by tasting it? Of course, you will. Do you know that foods would taste different if you did not have a nose? This experiment (实验) shows how important your nose is when you taste things. What You Need ▪ a friend to help ▪ small pieces of any food like carrot, orange, and banana ▪ small pieces of apple, raw (生的) potato and onion What You Do There are three different experiments. You and your friend should take turns trying them on each other. A. B. C. Experiment A: Ask your friend to close her eyes and give her a piece of the food to taste. She may know what it is. Experiment B: Ask your friend to close her eyes. Hold a piece of apple under her nose and ask her to eat the potato (but don’t call it by name). She will say it is a piece of apple! Experiment C: You can open your eyes this time. Make sure that your nose can’t smell anything by squeezing it. Now eat the raw onion. Surprise! You will not be able to taste the onion. The Science Secret The nose and the tongue work together to make food taste the way it does. However, you can only taste certain flavors like salty, bitter, sour, and sweet. All of the other “tastes” are actually “smells”, and you need your nose to “taste” them. Oh, and you might use this science secret the next time you are told to eat something you don’t like the taste of. If you hold your nose while you eat it, you won’t “taste” it at all. 16. Which of the following is NOT needed if you want to do the experiment? A. Raw onion. B. Water. C. Apple. D. A friend. 17. What’s the passage mostly about? A. How smell affects (影响) the way food tastes. B. Why different foods can smell the same. C. How smell changes the way people see. D. Why some things smell better than others. 18. In which part of the newspaper can you find the passage? A. Healthy lifestyle. B. Bedtime story. C. Fun sports. D. Science world. B 17. A 18. 根据“What You Need”中“a friend to help small pieces of any food like carrot, orange, and banana small pieces of apple, raw (生的) potato and onion”可知,没有提到水。 根据“The nose and the tongue work together to make food taste the way it does.” 再根据“This experiment (实验) shows how important your nose is when you taste things.” 故选A。 D。 B People usually think volunteering is just for adults. It seems hard for students like us. But it is totally different in Canada. The government encourages people of any age to volunteer in public and make contributions (贡献) to the whole society. Therefore, if students want to graduate (毕业) from high school, 30 hours of volunteering is needed. If students want to get into a good university, it helps if they contribute a lot to society. Volunteering is an important point that universities will think about. Besides, there are volunteer chances everywhere. People can find information about how to volunteer posted in the library or on the Internet. It includes many different jobs, such as wrapping (包装) gifts in a shopping mall, taking care of small kids or cleaning up a church. Students can choose what they want to do and register (注册) online. I got my first volunteer job at New Westminster Museum every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. My job is to check the documents (文件) on a computer and correct mistakes. The museum is about the history of a historically important family in New Westminster. At first, I was nervous to communicate with others. But as time passed, I became more open. During the course of volunteering, I not only learned how to work with other volunteers but also learned a lot of history about New Westminster. As a volunteer, I am proud of myself. I enjoy doing my job and helping others. 19. How many hours of volunteering do students need to finish to graduate from high school in Canada? A. 20 hours. B. 30 hours. C. 40 hours. D. 50 hours. 20. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about? A. The history of volunteering in Canada. B. The importance of volunteering for Canadian students. C. My mother showed her worries to the doctor when he put stitches (缝合针) in my arm for the third time. The doctor suggested I should take up fishing. But since I had nearly died in a lake later, my mother ruled water out of my life. Finally, she chose reading as the only solution for my condition. For one hour a day, my mother ordered me to sit on a chair and read a book. I cried so hard that I couldn’t see the letters. Then my teacher uncle walked in with a lot of books. He said all I had to do was reading the first twenty pages of a book. If I was still bored after that, I could put it down and pick up another. The first book I picked up was The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl, and after twenty pages, I fell out of my chair laughing. This crocodile is tired of eating fish and wants to eat some children for a change, so he climbs into a children’s playground and makes himself look like a seesaw (跷跷板). I followed this up with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Their quick messages and easy words were just to my taste. Little by little, the books became longer and more difficult. I was in the middle of reading The Lord of the Rings when my mother said that I was reading too much and that I should run around outside like I used to. But by then. I was lost myself in long stories like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. To this day, I think of books as a secret friend to whom I can always turn for advice. A good book must have two things: make us happy and teach us something. If a book doesn’t interest you after twenty pages, put it down and try another. 23. Why might the doctor advise the writer to go fishing? A. Because it’ll help forget worries. B. Because many active kids enjoy fishing. C. Because it can make the writer quiet. D. Because the writer is good at swimming. 24. Which book made the writer laugh out loud? A. The Enormous Crocodile. B. Fantastic Mr. Fox. C. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. D. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. 25. What does the underlined sentence mean? A. The writer wants to read long and difficult books. B. The writer sent messages to his uncle to ask for advice. C. The writer had different experiences by reading different books. D. The writer enjoyed these books because they were easy to understand. 26. What can we learn from the text? A. Do not teach fish to swim. B. Interest is the best teacher. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart. C 24. A 25. D 26. 根据文章第一段“The doctor suggested I should take up fishing.” 根据文章第三段“The first book I picked up was The Enormous Crocodile… and after twenty pages, I fell out of my chair laughing.” 故选A。 根据“Their quick messages and easy words were just to my taste.” 全文围绕作者从被迫阅读到爱上阅读的转变展开,强调兴趣的重要性,结合最后一段“A good book must have two things: make us happy and teach us something.” B。 D For more than a month, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese business based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. The new AI came out on Jan. 20. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became the top free application in Apple’s App Store, reported Xinhua. Its developer said that DeepSeek-R1 is as good at difficult tasks as other big models but needs less computing power. It is also the cheapest of its kind and took only about 5.57 million US dollars (40.58 million yuan) to develop. That is the way less than the hundreds of millions or even billions that US businesses have had to spend in building similar AI models. DeepSeek-R1’s success largely came from its special training method. Traditionally, AI is trained in two ways. One is Chain-of-Thought (CoT, 思维链), where AI learns to break problems into smaller, simpler steps. The other is Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT, 监督微调), which works by showing AI lots of practice problems along with the right answers for it to find a pattern. DeepSeek-R1, however, used Reinforcement Learning (RL,强化学习) as the main method, Xinhua reported. In RL, AI learns by trying different things. It gets rewards for correct actions and gets punished for mistakes. For example, in a game, it gets points for picking up litter and ▲ . Over time, it works out the best solution all by itself. This is how DeepSeek-R1 has grown to be a reasoning model, which is a new type of AI, noted Microsoft engineer Vinayak Hegde. Common AI models, like GPT-40, usually just give direct answers. But reasoning models are trained to both think and show the process. 27. What does the underlined word “it” refer to? A. Deepseek-R1. B. OpenAI. C. Chat GPT. D. Chain-of-Thought. 28. What are the reasons for DeepSeek-R1’s success? ① its low cost ② its big models ③ its simple pattern ④ its special method A. ①③ B. ③④ C. ②③ D. ①④ 29. Which of the following can be put in ▲ . A. collects much information B. solves the problem itself C loses ones for breaking a glass D. uses the main method again 30. What’s the best title of the passage? A. How Deepseek-R1 Developed B. A New AI Model Excited the World C. The Rising Technology of China D. The Popularity of Deepseek-R1 【答案】27. A 28. D 29. C 30. 根据“For more than a month, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-Rl.”和“The new AI came out on Jan. 20. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT”可知,一个多月来,世界对一种新的人工智能模型DeepSeek-R1感到兴奋。 故选A。 根据“It is also the cheapest of its kind and took only about 5.57 million US dollars (40.58 million yuan) to develop.”和“DeepSeek-Rl’s success largely came from its special training method.” 根据“In RL, AI learns by trying different things. It gets rewards for correct actions and gets punished for mistakes. For example, in a game, it gets points for picking up litter”可知,DeepSeek-R1使用强化学习模式,从正确的行为中得到奖励,从错误中得到惩罚,在游戏中因捡垃圾得分,此处是说失分的情况,C项“因打碎玻璃而失分”符合语境。 We do want to help our family, friends and classmates when they’re having a hard time. ____31____ Rachel Miller tells us some ways about that in her new book How to Be There for Yourself and Your People. ____32____ When a friend comes to you, it’s a good idea to help them forget their terrible experience. But if you want to tell them your story that is similar to their experience, it’s not always welcome. If you do feel that your experience might be helpful to hear, Miller’s advice is to let your friends know that you went through something similar, but allow them to decide if they want to hear about it at the moment. Ask how you can best help your friend. You may not know what kind of help your friends want. Just ask! Miller advises to try these questions: “____33____” “Do you need someone to talk to? Or would you like my advice?” “How are you feeling about the hard experience you’re going through? ” A heartfelt “I’m sorry” is a great help. ____34____ Because you cannot feel the same way as them. But Miller says a real, honest “I’m sorry” can help to make your friends feel heard and accepted. “Sometimes there isn’t a perfect way to make people feel better,” she says. “But what you need to do is to say ‘You’re not alone. I’m with you. I’m so sorry it’s happening to you.’” A. What’s the best way I can help you right now? B. Keep your focus (关注) on your friend. C. But what does that look like? D. People may be shy away from saying “I’m sorry” to the people in trouble. E. Care about your friend in time 5. What will you do to help your friends in need? Why? (no more than 30 words) ________35________ 【答案】31. C 32. B 33. A 34. D 35. I will listen to them without judgement. Because being heard can make a difference.(言之有理即可) 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,Rachel Miller在她的新书《如何帮助自己和人们》中告诉我们了一些方法,如何正确帮助人们的建议。 【31题详解】 根据“We do want to help our family, friends and classmates when they’re having a hard time.” 【32题详解】 根据“When a friend comes to you, it’s a good idea to help them forget their terrible experience. ”可知,朋友来找你时,帮他们忘掉那段糟糕的经历是个不错的主意,所以此处要关注朋友的情况,B选项“要将注意力集中在你的朋友身上”符合,故选B。 【33题详解】 根据“You may not know what kind of help your friends want. Just ask! Miller advises to try these questions:”可知,可能不清楚你的朋友到底需要什么样的帮助。那就直接问问吧,所以此处应该是询问与提供帮助有关的内容,A选项“我现在能为你提供什么样的帮助才是最好的呢”符合,故选A。 【34题详解】 根据“A heartfelt ‘I’m sorry’ is a great help.” I will listen to them without judgement. Because being heard can make a difference. One Sunday, I decided to tidy my bookshelf up. Don’t be so nervous. It’s not a big deal as long as you deal with it properly. I’d like to give you some advice. First of all, I think you should help with chores at home. It can help you develop your independence and teach you how to look after yourself. It is not your parents’ job to provide a clean environment for you. They are already busy with their work. So you should do your part in keeping the room tidy. So don’t be angry with your mom. Just understand each other. As for taking after-school classes, I have my own opinions. If you really work hard at school, there is no need for you to take so many classes. You should sit down and communicate with your mom to tell her that you are under too much stress because of these after-school classes. You can also tell your mom that you need time to relax and think for yourself. I think if you do, your mom will understand you. All in all, don’t feel sad. It is normal to have problems. A. The writer loves doing her job and will continue to do it. C I was a pretty active child, always running around and knocking into things. D For more than a month, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese business based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. The new AI came out on Jan. 20. In just one week it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became the top free application in Apple’s App Store, reported Xinhua.
