Unit 2 Keep Tidy!
Section A(1a-1b)
一、Teaching Aims
Students will be able to recognize and correctly pronounce the English names of common learning and daily items such as "ruler", "cap", "pencils", "bottle", "eraser", "keys", etc.
They can proficiently use the sentence pattern "What do you have in your schoolbag?" to ask about others' possessions and "I have..." to describe their own items.
Students will learn to use the special question "What colour is it / are they?" to inquire about the colour of items and respond correctly with "It’s / They are...".
二、Teaching Key and Difficult Points
Master the key nouns representing learning and daily items, such as "bottle", "eraser", "key", "schoolbag", etc.
Proficiently use sentence patterns for inquiring about, describing possessions and their colour characteristics, like "What do you have in your schoolbag?"
三、Teaching Process
A. Warming - up
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of messy and tidy schoolbags on the PPT. Then ask students: "Look at these pictures. Which schoolbag do you like better? Why?" Encourage students to express their opinions in simple English. For example, some students may say: "I like the tidy one. Because it's easy to find things."
B. Presentation
New Vocabulary Introduction
Show the pictures of items in 1a one by one on the PPT, such as a ruler, a cap, pencils, a bottle, an eraser, and keys. Teach students to read the words one by one, emphasizing the correct pronunciation. For example, when teaching "ruler", pronounce it clearly /ˈruːlə(r)/, and ask students to repeat several times.
After teaching all the words, play a word - reading game. The teacher says the Chinese meaning of the word, and students quickly respond with the English word. For example, the teacher says "橡皮", and students should say "eraser".
Sentence Pattern Introduction
Point to a student's schoolbag and ask: "What do you have in your schoolbag?" Help the student answer: "I have a ruler / some pencils...". Repeat this process with several students to make sure they understand the sentence pattern.
Then write the sentence pattern "What do you have in your schoolbag? I have..." on the blackboard. Read it aloud with the students for several times, and ask them to pay attention to the intonation.
C. Practice
Pair Work
Ask students to work in pairs. Each pair takes turns to ask and answer the question "What do you have in your schoolbag?" according to the items they actually have in their schoolbags. Walk around the classroom to monitor their conversations and offer help if necessary.
After a few minutes, invite some pairs to come to the front of the classroom and act out their conversations for the whole class. Give praise and encouragement to the pairs with good performance.
Guessing Game
Prepare some small boxes and put different items from 1a in each box. Invite a student to come to the front of the class. The teacher tells the student what is in the box secretly. Then the student uses the sentence "I have something in the box. Guess what it is." to start the game. Other students ask questions like "Is it a ruler?" "Is it a bottle?" using the vocabulary they just learned. The student with the box can only answer "Yes, it is." or "No, it isn't." until the correct item is guessed.
D. Listening
Pre - listening
Show the picture in 1b on the PPT and ask students to look at it carefully. Then ask them: "What can you see in the picture? Who are they?" Guide students to describe the picture in simple English. For example, students may say: "I can see two girls. They are talking about their schoolbags."
Explain the task of 1b to the students: "Now you will listen to a conversation between Cindy and Grace. Please listen carefully and check the things you hear in 1a."
While - listening
Play the recording of 1b for the first time. Students just listen without doing anything.
Play the recording again. This time, students listen and check the items they hear in 1a. Walk around the classroom to make sure students are following the right steps.
Post - listening
Check the answers with the whole class. Ask students to read out the items they checked one by one. Then play the recording one more time, and students can follow the recording to read the words and sentences softly.
E. Production
Group Work
Divide students into groups of four. Each group is given a piece of paper and a pen.
Ask each group to imagine they are going on a picnic. They need to discuss and write down what they will take in their picnic bags using the sentence pattern "We have...". For example, "We have some sandwiches. We have some bottles of water. We have some fruits."
Walk around the groups to listen to their discussions and offer guidance. Encourage students to use as many different items as possible.
Report
After the group work, each group selects a representative to report their picnic bag items to the whole class. For example, the representative may say: "In our picnic bag, we have three sandwiches, two bottles of juice, some apples, and a cap." Other students listen carefully and can ask questions if they are interested.
F. Summary and Homework
Summary
Summarize the key points of this class with the students. Review the new vocabulary of items and the sentence patterns for asking about and describing possessions. Ask students to recall the words and sentences they learned today.
Emphasize the importance of keeping our schoolbags and study areas tidy. Encourage students to apply what they learned in class to their daily lives.
Homework
Ask students to make a list of the things in their bedrooms and describe them to their parents in English, using the sentence patterns they learned in class. For example, "I have a bed in my bedroom. It's blue. I have some books on my desk."
Ask students to draw a picture of their ideal schoolbag, label the items in it with English words, and write a short passage about it.
