Each class cost twenty dollars. The pool is big enough for six students per class. Classes will increase in difficulty each week. Making Friends Through Letters
Aimed at helping us high school students make friends by writing letters, an activity was held by the City Youth League last week.
The activity was held among all the high schools in our city. It began with the participants writing a letter, in which they made a self introduction and shared all the topics they were interested in. Then the letters were randomly sent to students in other schools. It’s not hard to imagine how excited we were when receiving a letter from a stranger. It was with this traditional method of communication that we made new friends to share our sorrow and happiness.
All in all, not only did the activity promote mutual communications among students but also it relieved the pressure brought by intense study.
第二节 (满分25分)
Under the burning sun, my mom was mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over (汗流涞背). Once a man or woman passed by, my mom would give a piece of paper to him or her. Someone refused by slightly waving his hand and someone just ignored her without looking at her. Of course, there was someone who accepted the paper from my mom but would then throw it into a garbage can not far away. Seeing the scene, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. Tears welling up in my eyes, I knew it’s so hard for mom to earn money.
Then I continued making my way to the supermarket, and suddenly a good idea occurred to me. I bought a parasol/portable electric fan/bottle of sunscreen for mom instead of an album for myself. After that, I returned to the place where my mom worked. She mistook me for a passer-by and gave me a piece of paper. I took it and gave her the parasol/electric fan/bottle of sunscreen. Surprised to find out it was me, she mildly scolded me for my wasting money. I told her I bought it with the money I earned. She accepted it with a big smile on her face. It was then that I came to understand the value of money.

I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻的) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food festival”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra (秋葵), and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!
24.According to paragraph 2, people wished they also had a garden so that ________.
A.they could spend happy times together with their family in it
B.they could grow vegetables and sell at the market
C.they could invite their neighbors and hold parties in it
D.they didn’t have to spend so much money on food
25.Which of the following is the same as the underlined word “bounty”?
A.Present. B.Kindness. C.Laughter. D.Happiness.
26.For what purpose did Happy and Ben invite the neighbors to their garden?
A.To ask them to attend a birthday party.
B.To help them get to know each other.
C.To let them enjoy what they grew in the garden.
D.To ask them to share some interesting stories.
27.We can infer that ____________.
A.Happy and her husband Ben don’t like spending time with others
B.Happy and her husband Ben sometimes quarrel with each other
C.Happy and her husband Ben are a generous and warm-hearted couple
D.Happy and her husband Ben live on the food they grow in their garden
【答案】22.D 23.A 24.C 25.C
根据第二段中“As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard. (随着食品价格上涨的速度超过了Ben种的豆子的生长速度,我们都希望我们也有一个这么大的花园。当我们在市场上花钱的时候,可以看到Happy在她后院摘豆子)”可知,人们希望有一个大花园是为了不用在食物上花太多钱。故选D项。
23.词句猜测题。根据第四段中“By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra (秋葵), and squash.(上午9点,我们9个人在花园里采摘西红柿、豆子、秋葵和南瓜)”可知,他们之前在花园里采摘了农作物。结合划线词所在句“As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty of the day, already packaged and frozen. (当我们离开时,Happy和Ben给了我们每个人一个购物袋,里面装满了当天的bounty,已经包装好并冷冻了)”中“a shopping bag”和“already packaged and frozen”可推知,购物袋里装的是他们当天从花园里收获的农作物,作为“礼物”送给作者一行,所以bounty与present同义。故选A项。
24.推理判断题。根据第四段中“By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra (秋葵), and squash. (到上午9点,我们九个人在花园里摘西红柿、豆子、秋葵和南瓜)”和“As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty of the day, already packaged and frozen. (当我们离开时,Happy和Ben给了我们每个人一个购物袋,里面装满了当天收获的农作物,已经包装好并冷冻了)”以及最后一段中“The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. (真正的礼物是朋友们在一起享受彼此的陪伴的一天。如果没有Happy和Ben的花园,这一切都不会发生)”可推知,Happy和Ben邀请邻居们到他们的花园是为了让他们享用花园里种植的农作物。故选C项。
25.推理判断题。根据第一段中“I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻的) word to anyone or about anyone. In a high-tech lab on John's Hopkins University's Homewood campus in Maryland, engineers have been building a robot that may be able to stitch (缝针) back together the broken tissues in your stomach and even your brain,no doctor needed.
The robot has a high-tech camera on one arm and a high-tech sewing machine on a second arm.The goal is to develop,in the next several years,a robot that makes the delicate work more consistent.
The robot, known as Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot,or STAR,which is run by a highly advanced computer program, will advance technology currently in wide use in operating rooms. The robot completes about a stitch a minute, slightly slower than a human surgeon. But the tests so far have shown more consistency than what the humans can achieve.
Long hours of traditional surgery can cause human hands to get tired and tremble, which may cause accidents during an operation.Robert Langer,an engineer, said the robotic arm could change the way surgeries are done.He has helped found dozens of biotech companies including Galen Robotics. The robotic arm being developed by Hopkins engineers is this company's product.
Galen CEO Bruce Lichorowic compared the robotic arm to future for surgeons, saying it increases their stability, reduces tiredness and prevents cramps (抽筋) during long surgeries, all of which lead to safer surgeries.
Galen Robotics has its roots in research from Johns Hopkins University, but the company had been based in Silicon Valley until 2019.“The company currently employs about 40 people, about half of whom have advanced degrees from Johns Hopkins,” said Lichorowic, adding that the company plans to grow to 60 positions by the end of the year.
Galen's robotic arm is not for sale yet,but Lichorowic said the company expects to submit an application to the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) later this year.

Cerebral palsy(脑瘫)is the most common motor disability in children. The condition, which affects about 1 in 345 children, can make daily activities like walking, eating,or even lifting a cup difficult.A team of researchers from the University of California,Riverside (UCR) hopes to reduce the daily struggles with robotic clothing that will allow kids with cerebral palsy to better control their arm movements.
Wearable robotic units to help people with mobility issues have been around for many years. However, they are rigid and uncomfortable to wear. The UCR team plans to use light-weight materials to create a robotic sleeve that is cheap, durable, and, most importantly, comfortable to wear on a daily basis.
“Hard materials don't interact well with humans,” said Jonathan Realmuto,UCR assistant professor of mechanical engineering and project lead.“What we're going for by using materials like nylon and elastic are essentially robotic clothing.”
The scientists envision the robotic sleeves to have sealed areas that can be inflated. When filled with air, they would become temporarily rigid and provide the force needed for movement. The clothing will be fitted with sensors to detect small muscle contractions and anticipate what the wearer wants to do.The inflated bladders(气囊)will then help move the arm to complete the intended action.
“If we can help kids brush their own teeth, pour water or open doors, actions that others take for granted,it's a huge win for them,” Realmuto said.“And it's also a huge win for their families and caretakers.”
The UCR engineers are not the only ones working on soft robotic clothing to help those with motor disabilities.San Francisco-based startup CIONIC is on a similar mission. The company's first product, the CIONIC Neural Sleeve,is designed to improve mobility for people with conditions like cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.Jeremiah Robison, the founder of CIONIC,was inspired to develop the product after seeing his daughter struggle with cerebral palsy.
32.What is the disadvantage of previous robotic clothing?( )

34.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?( )
A.Why bladders are needed in the new unit.
B.How the improved robotic clothing works.
C.What material is used in the robotic sleeves.
D.What difficulty cerebral palsy patients have.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?( )
A.The UCR is teaming up with the CIONIC.
B.Soft robotic clothing is an emerging industry.
C.The CIONIC Neural Sleeve is quite popular.
D.Robison made robotic clothing for his family first.

【参考范文】
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Everyone’s first job is special, because you gain useful experience that you can use in other positions in future. It also teaches you about the value of money.
When I was about sixteen years old, I wanted to buy my favourite music album (音乐专辑), but I did not have any money. This was because the money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I had to find a part-time job in order to buy the music I wanted.
Luckily, I found that there were many old people who needed help in my neighbourhood. And I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. She answered that indeed she needed help in her garden.
My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one in her front yard and backyard. Finishing this tiring and boring task, I mowed (修剪) her lawn front and back. That was the first day of my job, and it took me about two hours. After that, I was paid ten dollars for my work. It was less than I thought, but at least I had earned my first money.
After getting that ten dollars, I intended to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. Although it was very hot in the street and many people were holding parasols (遮阳伞), my inner joy defeated the high temperature, because I knew it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts. But on the way to supermarket, I happened to see my mom “working” on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before, I just knew she was a saleswoman.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over (汗流浃背).

【范文】

28.What can STAR do?( )
A.Shorten operation time.
B.Replace human surgeons.
C.Make operations smooth.
D.Advance medical studies.
29.What does Lichorowic think of STAR?( )
A.Flexible. B.High-cost.
C.Promising. D.Unpredictable.
30.What can we know about Galen Robotics?( )
A.It is sponsored by John's Hopkins University.
B.It still has its base in Silicon Valley now.
C.Its robot arm will be released later this year.
D.It is scheduled to expand within this year.
31.In which column is this text most likely to appear?( )
A.Mind & Brain. B.Health & Technology.
C.Business & Investment. D.Physics & Medicine.

A.They are uncomfortable to wear.
B.They are not easy to carry around.
C.They aren't environmentally friendly.
D.They aren't affordable for most families.
33.What improvement is being made to the existing robotic clothing?( )
A.Easy operation. B.Adjustable design.
C.Soft material. D.Simple structure.

How to Avoid an Internet Addiction
It may seem like everyone surfs the web these days. But if you can’t have interest in other aspects of your life because of the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. You might fear you’re the only one who has experienced that feeling. 36 Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.
37
More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction. And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.
Set aside limited time for computer use.
Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it. 38 If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.
Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.
If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside to do something you enjoy, like playing a sport. This will take your mind off the computer. 39
Use an alarm clock or timer (计时器).
Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get away from the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop. 40
A. Being addicted to it is quite normal.
B. Admit you are at risk of an addiction.
C. The truth, though, is that it’s quite common to be an addict.
D. When the computer is not looking at you, you are less likely to use it.
E. This can be programmed to shut down your computer after the set time.
F. If you have a problem on weekdays, phone your friends or ask for help in person.
G. This will prevent you from using the Internet so often or going on to another page.

67.阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over (汗流浃背).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I continued making my way to the supermarket, and suddenly a good idea occurred to me.

28.What can STAR do?( )
A.Shorten operation time.
B.Replace human surgeons.
C.Make operations smooth.
D.Advance medical studies.
29.What does Lichorowic think of STAR?( )
A.Flexible. B.High-cost.
C.Promising. D.Unpredictable.
30.What can we know about Galen Robotics?( )
A.It is sponsored by John's Hopkins University.
B.It still has its base in Silicon Valley now.
C.Its robot arm will be released later this year.
D.It is scheduled to expand within this year.
31.In which column is this text most likely to appear?( )

B.They are not easy to carry around.
C.They aren't environmentally friendly.
D.They aren't affordable for most families.
33.What improvement is being made to the existing robotic clothing?( )
A.Easy operation. B.Adjustable design.
C.Soft material. D.Simple structure.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over (汗流浃背).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I continued making my way to the supermarket, and suddenly a good idea occurred to me.
