Tina, a cheerful lady, works as a cook in a large hotel. One day after finishing her daily work, she went into the freezer (冷藏库) to check (检查) some meat needed for the next day. Unluckily, the door closed itself behind her, locking her inside.
She was so scared that she shouted loudly and hit the door with all her power (力气), but no one could hear her cries. Most of the workers had already left. And from outside, it was impossible to hear the sounds coming from the closed freezer.
Three hours later, when she was about to pass out (昏迷), the hotel doorkeeper finally opened the door. That day, she was amazingly saved from death. Later, she asked the doorkeeper how he came to open the door, as it was not part of his daily work. The doorkeeper explained, “I have been working at this hotel for 20 years and hundreds of workers come in and out every day. You are one of the few people who say hi to me in the morning and say goodbye to me at night. Many people never noticed me. But today when you reported for work, you greeted me as usual with a ‘Hi’. But this evening, I noticed that I didn’t hear your usual ‘Goodbye. See you tomorrow.’ That’s when I knew something was wrong and decided to check around. C
A new study, by Dr. Rebecca Stone, shows that children as young as four years old eat more food when they are bored, compared with when they are in a normal mood.
The scientists have studied the actions that make children more likely to eat when they experience bad feelings. Often when children experience bad feelings such as feeling bored or sad, parents or caregivers will use food to make them feel better. However, this habit, known as using food to comfort feelings, seems to make it easier for children to eat more when they feel unhappy. Over time, eating too much will affect (影响) children’s health in both mind and body.
Dr. Stone stresses that the experience of feeling bad is important in the development of children’s sense of self and creativity, so she does not think that children should stay away from being bored. Instead, she advises children to learn to experience feelings of being bored without eating to feel better. She also advises that parents help children focus on (专注) other things when they feel bored, or change the home food environment to make it less likely for children to eat when bored.
Though every child is different in how they eat when bored, it is useful to know that how their parents give food might make a bad difference to this habit. Although it’s easy to use food as a way to help children, using food for comfort might cause stronger food cravings (欲望) when they feel upset later. Parents and caregivers should remember that this quick fix could bring future problems.
The team hopes to build on their findings by studying more unhappy feelings in children, and provide good advice for families to work through the difficulties with children’s eating habits in better ways.
11. What is the study mainly about?
A. What problems children have to solve. B. How bad feelings affect children’s eating.
C. How parents’ bad feelings affect children. D. Why children need good eating habits.
12. What do parents often do to comfort their sad children according to the text?
A. Giving them food. B. Reading stories. C. Seeing the doctor. D. Cleaning houses.
13. What does Dr. Stone advise parents to do?
A. Provide healthy food all the time. B. Let children eat whatever they like.
C. Change children’s study environment. D. Encourage children to do other activities.
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Healthy food can help cheer up children. B. Children shouldn’t experience bad feelings.
C. Eating when bored can cause future problems. D. Bad feelings make no difference to eating habits.
15. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. The wishes for future studies. B. Ways of developing good habits.
C. The importance of being happy. D. Problems of bad eating habits.
D
The ways we spend our time can be grouped into three “bottles”. These are the Necessary Tasks (任务) Bottle, the Voluntary Tasks Bottle and the Happiness Bottle.
Every day, we spend time filling the Necessary Tasks Bottle with useful things, like making money, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with Voluntary Tasks. These are things that we do for others, we may not enjoy, but we do them anyway. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and washing clothes for family members. Those bottles are very important because it will be a problem if we don’t fill them each day.
However, we often forget to fill the third bottle—the Happiness Bottle. This is the bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your Happiness Bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day? Between doing all the Necessary and Voluntary Tasks, time flies by. And before we know it, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.
This is why each day we have to make an effort (努力) to fill our Happiness Bottle. Most days, I fill mine by going to the dancing class. And I always leave classes more happily than when I get in. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We showed our musical talent and practiced music for charity (慈善). It was a time of fun, friendship, and music-making. At the end of the evening, my Happiness Bottle was filled to the top.
The challenge (挑战) for each of us is to not let the day go by without filling our Happiness Bottle. That takes some planning. Many of us probably need to pencil happiness activities into our schedule (日程表), or we will fill our schedule with those Necessary and Voluntary Tasks.
This week, think about how your time is being spent. Are you doing enough activities that bring joy to your life? Or are the Necessary and Voluntary Tasks using up all your time? At the end of the day, hopefully, we’ve done all we can do to make sure that our Happiness Bottle is full.
16. Which activity is a Necessary Task according to Paragraph 2?
A. Having fun with friends. B. Preparing dinner for family.
C. Going to work every day. D. Sending kids to piano lessons.
17. What does the underlined word “it” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. The passing of time. B. The end of such tasks. C. The need for sleep. D. The happiness of life.
18. How did the writer fill the Happiness Bottle this week?
A. By planning work clearly. B. By practicing music and dancing
C. By taking a short vacation. D. By raising money for sick kids.
19. What can help us to fill the Happiness Bottle?
A. Waiting for happy things to happen. B. Adding free time for fun anytime.
C. Planning activities that make us happy. D. Finishing all the tasks very quickly.
20. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A. Happiness plays the most important role. B. We need to live a balanced (平衡) life.
C. Planning can stop us working too much. D. Dancing classes can cheer us up.

13 What does Dr.
