教学重点:
identify the writing techniques of the article;
教学难点:infer the author’s attitude towards technological advances in precision farming;
教学用具:Multi-media
教学方法:Group work, discussion
教学实施过程:
1. Have students share their farming experiences.
2. Have students answer the two questions on page 16 before reading the article.
1)Farmers mainly relied on their knowledge and experience accumulated over many years.
For example, they gained knowledge about the 24 solar terms, which were developed in
ancient China through observing the changes of seasons, astronomy and other natural
phenomena. They were also familiar with many proverbs related to farming, which were
passed from one generation to the next. Knowledge and experience of this kind helped
farmers plan crop production and farming activities, such as when to sow seeds and how to
predict the weather, which promised them a good harvest.
2) Technology has advanced a lot, especially in the areas of the Internet of Things (IoT) and
artificial intelligence (AI). For this reason, farmers could use these technologies to assist
them with a variety of tasks such as those that take up too much time or require precise
calculations. In addition, the latest satellite technology allows farmers to predict weather
patterns further in advance and more precisely, helping them plan their farming activities
accordingly and consequently ensure a good harvest.
批 注
3. Have students read the article and finish A1 on page 18.
Para. 2: A combination of information-gathering tools and advanced technologies enables
farmers to manage their crops and resources precisely.
Para. 3: Soil sampling is an example of precision farming in its most fundamental form.
Para. 4: Precision farming can reach a much higher level with the application of artificial
intelligence.
Para. 5: The push for future developments in precision farming will benefit all of us.
4. Have students read the article again and finish A2 on page 18
1)It aims to improve food production and conserve the environment by reducing a farm’s
input and increasing its output.
2) Sensors, satellites and drones.
3)Monitoring, diagnosing, identifying and targeting.
4)Because AI technology is efficient and accurate, and cotton requires delicate handling.
5)Because it will contribute to a greener, healthier and better-fed planet.
5. Have students answer the first question in A3 on page 18.
The author wants the reader to focus on how technology has changed one key aspect of
farming. In this way, she helps the reader understand a major difference between traditional
farming and modern farming, while also highlighting the importance of technology in farming.
6. In expository writing, examples are often given to support statements. Different ways of
giving examples are used in this article. Have students find the examples given in the article.
These can be achieved with a combination of information-gathering tools like sensors,
satellites and drones, and advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). (lines 13–15)
Soil sampling, an example of precision farming in its most fundamental form, provides an
accurate means for farmers to tend their crops. (lines 22–24)
For instance, if the soil is found to be poor in nutrients, not only do farmers know that
fertilizer is needed, they can also calculate the exact amount. (lines 28–30)
