Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom.
“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane? Is that a bad thing?”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane?” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.
“Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.”
“Hurricanes can be good things?” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.
“Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute?”
Vicky’s mother put her head around the door.

Why not find a new friend in 2025—yourself! You may want to get love and care from a good friendship. Well, you shouldn’t have to go far to find them.
Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Give yourself the love and care you should give your friends and family. Becky Goddard-Hill, the writer of Create Your Own Confidence, says it means speaking to yourself with kindness. It also means taking really good care of your body and mind.
Studies show that self-love is good for your schoolwork, health and friendships. Self-love makes you believe in yourself. It makes you feel that you deserve (值得) good things, such as kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you face difficulties, you won’t upset yourself.
Start by being kind instead of being angry. When you make a mistake, don’t get angry with yourself. Tell yourself that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Then work out what you could do differently next time. Remember that no one is perfect. Becky suggests writing down your strengths (优点) as they can help you remember how excellent you are. “Looking at the list often will help bring out the best in you,” says Becky.
11. Which of the following might the writer of the passage agree with?
A. Self-love is only about being kind to others.
B. Self-love helps you feel better about yourself and face difficulties.
C. Self-love means you will never make mistakes.
D. Self-love is not important for your health.
12. Which shows the right order of the information in this passage?
A. Meanings→Reasons→Ways B. Ways→Reasons→Meanings
C. Meanings→Ways→Reasons D. Reasons→Ways→Meanings
13. What should you do when you make a mistake?
A. Learn from the mistake and avoid it next time.
B. Get angry with yourself and keep it in your mind.
C. Tell yourself that people always make mistakes.
D. Remember that no one is perfect and forget it quickly.
14. Which should not be on the list mentioned in the last paragraph?
①Tina thinks I’m helpful. ②I’m good at playing soccer.
③Wendy often disagrees with me. ④I won third prize in the high jump.
A. ① B. ② C. ④ D. ③
15. What’s the best title for the passage?

“Today,” said Mr.

When you make a mistake don’t get angry with yourself.

A. Learn from the mistake and avoid it next time.
B. Get angry with yourself and keep it in your mind.

①Tina thinks I’m helpful. ②I’m good at playing soccer.

A. ① B. ② C. ④ D. ③
