教学实施过程:
1. Have students read the title of the unit and the lines from “An Earth-hitting Song” and
look at the picture below. Then ask students to answer the following questions.
(1) What do you predict this unit is possibly about?
This unit is likely to be about agriculture or farming. The title means growing crops on the
land. The picture shows terraces, which are one of the best examples to show Chinese
farmers’ wisdom. Possibly, it also deals with how human beings use the land wisely to
feed the population of the whole world.
(2) How do you understand the lines from “An Earth-hitting Song”?
The lines describe the simple and peaceful life of ordinary people in ancient times. They
went out to labour in the open air when the sun rose; they returned home to rest when the sun
set. They drilled a well for drinking water and tilled the land for food. The lines show that
ancient working people were happy with their lives and nature provided them with basic.

2. Have students answer the following question.
What crops do farmers mainly grow in your hometown?
批 注
Farmers mainly grow such food crops as rice, wheat and corn. They also grow cash crops
such as oilseed rape, cotton and sesame
3. Have students look at the four given pictures and answer the first question on page 15.

4. Have students answer the second question on page 15.
When I was young I grew corn in my grandparents’ garden in the spring. I planted twenty
seeds in two rows and watered them. Within a few days, I noticed the first green plants
appearing. Thereafter, I fertilized and watered the plants regularly as they grew. I also often
checked the leaves of my plants to ensure they had no pests. After three months, eight
corncobs were ready for harvesting. My grandparents helped me harvest them early one
morning. We cooked them for lunch and dinner, and they were very tasty.
I would like to grow Chinese broccoli because it is my favourite vegetable and this type
of plant requires minimal care. I will sow seeds in autumn as the plants prefer cool onditions.
After regular watering, the plants should appear within ten days. I will check the size of the
leaves as they grow to determine when to harvest. It should take about two months. When I
notice the first flowers, I will harvest the plants’ stems and leaves. Then I will ask my mum
to stir-fry Chinese broccoli in my favourite way.
5. Have students work in pairs and discuss the following questions.
(1) What else do you know about crops?
Crops refer to plants that are grown in large quantities, especially as food. Crops can be
divided into two categories—food crops and cash crops. However, the boundary between
these two categories is not clear-cut.
(2) What are the common crops grown in our country?
Rice, wheat and corn are the main food crops grown in our country. Cotton, peanuts, tea
and sunflowers are the main cash crops.
