A Last month,I began my own twoweeklong digital detox.I got the inspiration from the tech writer Paul Miller, who got away from the Internet for a whole year.It was not worth mentioning as against the time Miller spent offline, but it was the longest I had gone through without almost any Internet in 13 years. Why did I do it?For a while I felt the urge to try fully disconnecting to free myself from the endless work.I wanted to take a break from it all for a couple of weeks at least to see what would happen. After all, throughout the last decade,I've been online 24—7,overreacting to my email inbox and social feed (传送)-living in a world where the line between the digital world and the real world gets a bit unclear at times. I haven't of course forgotten that I'm CEO of a social media company. My work is built around the premise(前提)that being connected makes our lives richer, more rewarding and more efficient.Still,I'd forgotten one key lesson along the way: moderation .As more and more of my life was spent scanning social feed and checking out my inbox,I realized that I needed to step back and get a whole new perspective. So on my winter vacation to Mexico,I took a break from being active on the Internet for the entire trip. For the whole 14 days,I ate a lot of delicious fish tacos, surfed and fixed up my cottage on the beach.I didn't write or send any emails.I didn't scan any Top 10 lists of feed. The one I did give myself was checking my email inbox occasionally-just to make sure an emergency wasn't unfolding while I was away. What I learned from my short experiment was actually not too unlike what Miller learned.I didn't end up discovering that technology is evil.In fact,I found myself reflecting on how technology over the last few years had let me experience some of the most rewarding and eventful moments of my life. 1.Why did the author begin digital detox for two weeks? A.Because Miller recommended him to do so. A.To deal with emergencies. B.For the sake of his health. C.To find some delicious food to eat. A.The author holds an objective attitude towards technology. B.The author finds technology is harmful. C.The author will advise digital detox completely. The study examined the home Internet use, wellbeing(幸福)and behaviour of 296,000 15yearolds in 41 countries.More than one in four spent more than four hours per day online outside of school. The study found lower levels of well-being among students who spent more than six hours per day online. They were twice as likely as teenagers spending one and two hours per day online to report that they felt lonely at school. These “extreme Internet users” were also especially at risk of “behaving in problematic ways at school, such as arriving late or skipping class”. The report said,“Lower levels of engagement(密切关系)with school may be connected to less sense of belonging at school. It is also possible that skipping class and arriving late for school are the consequence of lack of sleep among extreme Internet users.” It adds,“Parents, schools and health professionals can work together to watch and plan children's use of new media.” The study also found that countries that invest (投资)heavily in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools have seen no “considerable” difference in 15yearolds achievement in reading, math or science tests. The study results suggest “limited” use of computers at school “may be better” than not using them at all. However, students who use computers “very frequently” at school “do a lot worse in most learning outcomes”.The report says, “In the end, technology can strengthen great teaching, but great technology cannot replace poor teaching.” 5.The international study showed that ________. A.half of the students spent six hours online every day B.extreme Internet users had lower levels of wellbeing C.teenagers spent much time online when they felt lonely D.most of the students were late for school after extreme Internet use 解析:B [细节理解题。根据文章第二段的The study found lower levels of wellbeing among students who spent more than six hours per day online,再结合下文可知These “extreme Internet users”这些极端网民指的就是每天上网时间超过6小时的学生,即极端网民的幸福感较低。 6.What can we learn from the study results? A.Schools should invest more in ICT. B.Proper use of computers is helpful at school. C.Technology sometimes leads to poor teaching. D.Computer users perform well in maths at school. 根据文章最后一段的The study results suggest “limited” use of computers at school “may be better” than not using them at all. However, students who use computers “very frequently” at school do a lot worse in most learning outcomes可以推知,在学校正确使用电脑是有帮助的。 7.Where does this text most probably come from? A.An engineer textbook. B.A personal diary. C.A science news report. D.A computer book. 根据文章的结构和文章第一段的Teenagers who spend more than six hours online on school days are more likely to be lonely and skip school, according to an international study. Ⅱ.阅读七选五 __1__ Moving from high school into college can be especially different because of the freedom students experience in college along with a new set of expectations. In high school, students usually live at home, and their parents take care of all their physical needs such as food and housing.__2__ Parents are also there to offer help and make sure that the students' homework is done.During the school day, students rarely have free time. They go directly from one class to another.Teachers are always around to tell the students what to do.__3__ So students can often complete their homework and reading in a short time. __4__ They may be responsible for shopping, paying bills, and laundry. They also may have to cook their own meals.Their parents are not around to help with homework or even to check if it has been done.Contrary to students in high school, students in college may have a lot of free time between classes, but must discipline themselves to use this time productively for homework and other assignments.__5__ A.High school students have to bury themselves in piles of papers. B.Finally, the work itself is not so challenging. C.By contrast,in college, students often live away from home in dorms or apartments. D.In college, students may apply to a bank loan and others will try to find parttime jobs. E.Each new level of education brings new challenges and demands to students. F.Most importantly, college requires a higher level of thinking and a lot more work than high school. G.Students do not usually have to shop for their food, take time to pay bills,or even do their own laundry. 1.E [根据后句Moving from high school into college can be especially different because of the freedom students experience in college along with a new set of expectations. 2.G [根据前句In high school, students usually live at home ,and their parents take care of all their physical needs such as food and housing. 3.B [根据前文Parents are also there to offer help and make sure that the students' homework is done.Teachers are always around to tell the students what to do . So students can often complete their homework and reading in a short time .(因此学生经常可以在短时间内完成作业和阅读)构成因果关系,故选B项。] 4.C [根据空格后They may be responsible for shopping, paying bills, and laundry. 5.F [根据前句Contrary to students in high school, students in college may have a lot of free time between classes, but must discipline themselves to use this time productively or homework and other assignments .
