(2025·广东八校高三联考)Today, poetry and science are often considered to be completely separate career paths. However, that wasn't always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets.Similarly, the poet John Keats was also a licensed surgeon. The combination of these disciplines fell out of favor in the 1800s. Recently, however, there has been a reappearance of interest among scientists in expressing their research through poetry, such as lyrics and haiku, as alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki, participated in one of Illingworth's workshops where she and fellow scientists were tasked with writing haikus that highlighted water, a common theme in their research. “It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. “We do harm ourselves to think that scientists can't be artistic and that art can't be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees, noting that poetry simplifies complex scientific concepts into language that everyone can understand.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We're all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.(说明:文中加黑词汇为主题词汇)

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·合肥期末联考)How would you translate Chairman Mao Zedong's expression: “Bu Ai Hong Zhuang Ai Wu Zhuang”? “English or American translators might use the words: They love uniforms not gay dresses,” said Xu Yuanchong, a well-known Chinese translator and the first Asian winner of the world's highest prize for translation, the Aurora Borealis Prize. Xu thought that this translation was correct but not beautiful at all. He cleverly used just two words — “face” and “powder” — to translate it as “To face the powder and not to powder the face”, which became one of Xu's most representative translations.
Xu thought that the equivalence (相同) of idea, sound and form were the three basic elements found in good translation. However, his method — recreation instead of literal (字面的) — is controversial. Some people said that it was different from the original text. “I think not.” Xu replied firmly. “Western languages are comparable. It's easy to find the equivalent of English in other languages. But it's different in Chinese. There are only 50% of equivalents between Chinese and English. If you cannot find an equivalent, then you must find the best words to translate. To find the best word is innovation. It's recreation,” he explained.
Xu Yuanchong likes to communicate with the younger generation about academic work, hoping that working together to spread Chinese culture will contribute to making the world a better place.
Xu Yuanchong also authored a book, which in Chinese is called “Meng Yu Zhen”, which literally means “dream and reality”. But Xu created a different English name for it. He used “A dream translated into reality”. “This summarizes my entire life. My whole life is about translating my dream into reality,” he explained.
Xu Yuanchong was an expert at translating ancient Chinese poems into English and French but even at the age of 96 had one dream still to fulfill — to translate all of Shakespeare's works into Chinese.

The Arkanses plan calls for students to recite a passage from a well-known poem, play or speech. That's it: an old-fashioned demand that students memorize the Gettysburg Address or Hamlet's “To be or not to be” or Gwendolyn Brooks's We Real Cool and recite it to an audience.
Most parents would probably call this a worthy exercise once abandoned for long, gathering the courage to speak in public and firing the adolescent imagination. Who could object to store memorable words in teenage heads otherwise packed with short videos?
English teachers, that's who. Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition, mechanical and prescriptive (规定的) rather than creative or thoughtful. Reciting texts from memory, they say, merely drops information into students' minds. It's repetitive learning instead of critical analysis.
That's wrong. Recitation allows students to experience a text as a living thing, ready to be taken up by a new generation. Committing a poem or speech to memory means stepping into the author's shoes and pondering what he meant. Deciding which words to stress when reciting means thinking about what those words mean.
In our age of social media and artificial intelligence, the practice of recitation has never been more needed. Memorizing classic words reminds us that they are alive.
Watch the faces of parents as they listen to their children urging us all toward what Martin Luther King called “a dream deeply rooted in the American dream,” or saying with Robert Frost, “I have been one acquainted with the night,” or with Shakespeare, “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow ...”
When young reciters return to their seats, they know they have made ageless words their own. What parents and students feel at that moment transcends (超越) a good grade. For a few minutes, hardworking teens become King, Frost or Shakespeare.
语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文,主要讨论了在社交媒体和人工智能时代,背诵经典词句的重要性,以及现代教育者对此的反对态度。

How to read a poem
You've selected the poem you want to read — congratulations! Now it's time for the business of reading it.
Examine the title and the shape
__9__ — how does it make you feel? How does the title fit the shape of the poem? If the title is sad, let the shape of the poem inform the small difference of the emotion — if it's short and sparse (稀疏的), maybe it's coming from a place of desolation or desperation.__10__.
Read the poem as you normally read anything
Reading poetry doesn't require a clever approach; you can read as you'd read anything else. On the first pass through, absorb whatever it is that arises upon first impression.__11__, maybe your stomach churns (恶心) at a particular phrase, or you hold your breath at a certain line. Explore the feelings that come up as you read.
__12___
Next, try reading the poem out loud or search for readings of the poem online. This is where the music of a poem emerges, and you can feel the shape of each word and line as you move through it.
Add context to paint a full picture
Finally, return to the poem context.__13__; look at the publication date and consider the world around the poem when it was first released. Consider where the poem lives: Was it released as part of the author's poetry book, or was it published in a literary magazine? From these details and materials you will get a deeper understanding of the poem.
A.Re-read for sound
B.Re-read for meaning
C.Dig into the author's history
D.Notice where in the poem you react
E.Look for where the poem offers a moment of surprise
F.Before you start a poem, you should first read the title

(2022·浙江高考·阅读理解B篇)The United States rose to global power on the strength of its technology, and the lifeblood that technology has long been electricity. By providing long-distance communication and energy, electricity created the modern world. Yet properly understood, the age of electricity is merely the second stage in the age of steam, which began a century earlier.
“It is curious that no one has put together a history of both the steam and electric revolutions,” writes Maury Klein in his book The Power Makers: Steam, Electricity, and the Men Who Invented Modern America. Klein, a noted historian of technology, spins a narrative (叙述) so lively that at times it reads like a novel.
The story begins in the last years of the 18th century in Scotland, where Watt perfected “the machine that changed the world”. Klein writes, “America did not invent the steam engine, but once they grasped its possibilities they put it to more uses than anyone else.”
Meanwhile, over the course of the 19th century, electricity went from mere curiosity to a basic necessity. Morse invented a code for sending messages over an electromagnetic circuit. Bell then gave the telegraph a voice. Edison perfected an incandescent bulb (白炽灯泡) that brought electric light into the American home.
Most importantly, Edison realized that success depended on mass electrification, which he showed in New York City. With help from Tesla, Westinghouse's firm developed a system using alternating current (交流电), which soon became the major form of power delivery.
To frame his story, Klein creates the character of Ned, a fictional witness to the progress brought about by the steam and electric revolutions in America during one man's lifetime. It's a technique that helps turn a long narrative into an interesting one.(说明:文中加黑词汇为主题词汇)
[真题评价]
[价值导向] 本文是一篇书评。文章按照时间顺序讲述了蒸汽时代和电力时代的联系。文章旨在引导学生欣赏科技相关的文学作品,辩证思考人类发展与科技之间的关系,启发学生从多维角度深入思考人类社会的发展。
1.What is Klein's understanding of the age of electricity?
A.It is closely linked to the steam age.
B.It began earlier than people thought.
C.It is a little-studied period of history.
D.It will come to an end sooner or later.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中Klein说的话“It is curious that no one has put together ... revolutions”可知, Klein认为没有人把蒸汽革命和电力革命的历史放在一起是很奇怪的,由此可知,他认为电力时代和蒸汽时代是密切相关的,故选A。
2.What can be inferred about Ned?
A.He was born in New York City.
B.He wrote many interesting stories.
C.He created an electricity company.
D.He lived mainly in the 19th century.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Klein creates the character of Ned ... electric revolutions in America during one man's lifetime”可知,Ned在他的一生中见证了蒸汽和电力革命给美国带来的进步。再结合第三段和第四段的内容可知,Klein在书中描绘了18世纪末期和19世纪蒸汽和电力的发展。由此可推知,Ned主要生活在19世纪。
3.What is the text?
A.A biography. B.A book review.
C.A short story. D.A science report.

(2025·菏泽高三期末检测)Andrea Lankford quit her job after spending 12 years as a National Park Service forester specializing in search and rescue missions in scenic and remote American landscapes. However, decades later, three young hikers went missing on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). She found herself unable to turn away from the three separate cases despite challenges in the inquiry into them.
Trail of the Lost was her answer.
It's an absorbing nonfiction narrative about the three hikers, including their lives and those of the people looking for them. It also explores the history of the PCT and the rich subculture, practices and even literature that surround it and those who undertake the 2,650-mile journey.
The book is a rich multilayered narrative that works on three different levels. The first is the story of each of the three hikers. Lankford offers a biography (传记) of each of the missing men and shows them through the eyes of those who knew them well and those who joined the search.
Right underneath the narratives about the three hikers are the stories of everyone looking for them. Lankford played a role in each search but she allowed friends, family and even strangers to occupy center stage throughout most of the narrative. The story looks at the role of missing person groups in the searches and how crucial word of mouth can be. Many warm-hearted individuals came forth and became instrumental in the searches or provided valuable information. But Lankford also writes of the many who lied for no apparent reason and confused the investigations.
The narrative also shines a light on diverse aspects of the PCT. Lankford, who has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was the first person to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail, knows just how the PCT is physically and mentally demanding. Besides, the book explores threats from mountain lions to people with bad intentions who don't observe the PCT's unspoken moral rules, serving as a revelation of the well-known, hidden or ignored dangers of the PCT.
Written with a clear, fast-paced, straightforward style, Trail of the Lost is as full of hope and humanity as it is packed with pain, sorrow, danger and tension. Read it and you'll find more than you seek.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
(2025·云南模拟)Flash fiction is a name for short stories that are kept within a specific word or character limit, usually up to 1,500 words.__8__. It's about finding clever ways to keep as much detail as possible about the plot, characters and setting but in the fewest words possible. Use these four top tips to help you write your own fascinating flash fiction.
•__9__
When planning a flash fiction story you first need to decide what are the important parts of the story that the reader just cannot miss. This might be a few moments from the beginning, middle and end. Once you have these, then any extra detail can either be cutaway or added in — if it makes the story better and the word limit allows.
•Develop characters using adverbs
Good flash fiction has well-developed characters who have personalities and faults. You can takeout long descriptions of your characters and replace them with the occasional adverb to help the reader understand the characters' movements and behaviour. Adverbs are words that describe verbs.__10__.Examples of adverbs include, “The prince stared angrily and marched awkwardly back to his horse.”
•Use clauses to add colour and detail
Clauses add detail to sentences without adding too many words.__11__.This is a section of a sentence starting with which, who, when, where, etc. For example, “The air, which smelt of oranges ...” Be careful not to make sentences too long, though, and takeout any clauses that don't add anything to the story.
•Combine your sentences
__12__.For example: Mary was upset she had school and took her shoes off. She slumped on the sofa and flicked on the TV. It was going to be a long day and she was nervous about meeting the new head teacher. This becomes; Mary slumped in front of the TV, took off her shoes and decided she was too nervous for school.
A.Practice to make it perfect
B.Plan carefully before writing
C.Writing flash fiction takes skill
D.You could use a relative clause
E.Verbs are words that describe physical or mental actions and states of being
F.Try doing this by picking a few things and putting them into a shorter sentence
G.They have different functions from other words used in flash fiction in English

9.选B 该空为段落小标题,总结该段内容。根据下文“When planning a flash ... the word limit allows.”可知,主要讲的是写微型小说的技巧之一:仔细计划。选项B“写作前仔细计划”能总结该段内容。
10.选E 根据上文“You can takeout long ... describe verbs.”可知,讲的是副词修饰动词这一功能,由此可知,紧接着应该介绍动词的功能。选项E “动词是描述身体或精神活动和存在状态的词汇”符合此推断,且上下文语意连贯。
11.选D 根据上文“Clauses add detail to sentences without adding too many words.”以及下文“This is a section of a sentence starting with which, who, when, where, etc.”

Having held the inter-school storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice.Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again.Consequently, I became confident.I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to perform for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was.“Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.“I'm sorry, Ms Sara,” I replied.“I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class.I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my text.I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too confident to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall.On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates.I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well.On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
Soon, it was my turn to talk.
Finally, results were announced after the contest.
参考范文:
Soon,it was my turn to talk.I gathered courage, and tried to hide the fact that I had lost confidence in myself. Then I started to tell my story.I may have appeared calm on the stage, but inside I had butterflies in my stomach.I couldn't continue the story anymore.I froze there, my mind going blank. The crowd, and even other candidates, started clapping, shouting together, “Come on, you can make it.”However, words failed me.
Finally, results were announced after the contest.Obviously, I was not on the list of winners. My supporters and my teachers who had expected me to win back the championship were really disappointed.Though they tried to comfort me with considerate words, I had never been more frustrated. It dawned on me that it was my pride that had caused me to ignore the significance of practicing and perfecting my skills. That evening, I went home and started practicing for the next year.
