Long long ago, there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood, just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that were put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.
One fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter (木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing his hands together happily, he said to himself, “This has come in time. I’m in need of a leg of the table” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with the arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say, “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!” Surprising, isn’t it?
He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look around the street—and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head. “There may be something wrong with my ears.”
“Well, well—to work once more.” He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.
Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide, eyes turned afraid and his tongue hung down on his chin (下巴). “Where did that voice come from? This piece of wood has learned to cry like a child? Here it is—a piece of common firewood, the same as any other. Yet—might someone be hidden (藏) in it? If so, the worst for him. I’ll fix him!” With these words, he started to knock it. He threw it to the floor, against the walls, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes—nothing; ten minutes—nothing. “Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.
“Stop it! Oh, stop it! You tickle my stomach” This time poor Mastro Cherry fell as if he had been shot (击中). When he opened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the floor.
33. How many times did the piece of wood talk?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
34. What does the underlined word “blow” probably mean?
A. A hard hit. B. Air from the mouth. C. A quick move. D. A musical sound.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了老木匠发现了一块木头,当他要做桌腿时,却发现不断有说话声传出来。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!”和第七段“Oh. oh! You hurt me!”以及最后一段“Stop it! Oh, stop it! You tickle my stomach.”可知,木头一共说了三次话。故选C。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“I’m in need of a leg of the table”、“But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with the arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say, ‘Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!’ Surprising, isn’t it?”和“ He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.”可知,木匠要用这块木头来做桌子腿,要用工具敲打木头,因此blow与“敲打”有关,与hit同义。故选A。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据“As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy.”可知,Mastro Cherry发现了这块木头,所以e排在第一位,根据“he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say,”可知,他听到了第一个声音,所以a排在第二位。根据“He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one!”可知,他到处寻找这个声音来自哪里,所以b排在第三位。根据“Yet—might someone be hidden in it? If so, the worst for him. I’ll fix him!”可知,他怀疑有人藏在木头里,所以d排在第四位,根据“trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. ‘Well, well — to work once more!’ So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.”可知,Mastro Cherry笑着唱歌鼓励自己。所以c排第五位。故选D。
【36题详解】
推理判断题。根据“As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy.”可知,Mastro Cherry一看到那块木头,就欣喜若狂;根据“‘Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!’ Surprising, isn’t it?”可知,他感到惊讶;根据“This time poor Mastro Cherry fell as if shot. When he opened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the floor.”
D
What you do after studying is very important. It can decide how well you learn and remember things. Today, on Education Tips, we’ll talk about two free ways to help you study better: wakeful rest and sleep.
Many students like to do other things right after studying. Some check their phones or use computers. Others play video games or watch TV. But studies show that having a rest after studying can help you remember what you’ve learned. The idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain (大脑) gets a chance to rest. It’s hard for your brain to rest when you’re playing computer games. You might think this is strange, but lots of studies show the good things about “wakeful rest”—________.
In 2019, a study found that both young people and older people could remember what they learned better after doing wakeful rest. If you want to try wakeful rest, it’s easy. Just sit quietly for 5 to 10 minutes. Don’t look at your phone, read books, or play games. That’s all!
Sleep is also very important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School says sleep helps us learn in two ways. Their website says, “If you don’t get enough sleep, you can’t focus on something well, so you can’t learn well.” And sleep helps us remember things, and remembering is key when learning new things.
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) says adults aged 20 to 64 should sleep 6 to 7 hours a day. Teenagers may need a bit more sleep, and people over 65 may need a bit less. So, try some wakeful rest after studying. Then, get a good night’s sleep. These are simple and free ways to help you remember what you learn.
37. Your friend is preparing for the exam. What will you advise him to do after studying?
A. Open your phone and chat with friends on WeChat for a while.
B. Start to play your favourite video game for 30 minutes to relax.
C. Start to prepare for another subject’s study as quickly as you can.
D. Lie down quietly for 8 minutes without using the phone or reading.
38. Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A. it means taking a break without any sleep
B. you should play games to relax your brain
C. you’d better go on with study after having a rest
D. that’s resting after learning while you’ re still awake
39. How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF?
A. Less than 6 hours. B. Just 7 hours.
C. Around 8 hours. D. No more than 7 hours.
40. Which may be the best title for the passage?

Volunteering is a great way to make the world better, and helping in museums is especially meaningful. Museum volunteers take on different duties according to their skills or interests. In the visitor information centre, they sell tickets, keep luggage (行李) and answer questions. For guided tours, they share exhibitions and help visitors appreciate. When museum events are held, they help in workshops, talk to visitors, and document (记载) exhibits and events.
China has several fantastic museums. The Palace Museum was built in 1925. With wonderful buildings and art treasures inside, it is well-known to people all around the world. The China Science and Technology Museum which opened in 1988, improves public understanding of science through exhibitions (展览) and programmes. The Nantong Museum, set up in 1905, is the first public museum. It is still open to the public for free. The National Art Museum of China is China’s largest art museum opened in 1963. It houses over 130,000 artworks.
Museum volunteering is good for both volunteers and the community. For example, Wenwei, a history teacher, loves giving tours and sharing stories, while Niuchen turns her interest into a job. Siyue, an 18-year-old student, learns a lot and makes her IT skills better.

What you do after studying is very important. It can decide how well you learn and remember things. Today on Education Tips, we’ll talk about two free ways to help you study better: wakeful rest and sleep.
Many students like to do other things right after studying. Some check their phones or use computers. Others play video games or watch TV. But studies show that having a rest after studying can help you remember what you’ve learned. The idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study your brain (大脑) gets a chance to rest.
A. Education Today: The Importance of Wakeful Rest
B. Study Tips: How to Use Phones Wisely After Learning
C. The Power of Rest: Two Free Ways to Better Your Study
D. Sleep Secrets: Why Teenagers Need More Rest Than Adults
