Have students talk about the climate in their hometown. My hometown enjoys a humid subtropical climate with plenty of rainfall. The climate varies with four distinctive seasons. The spring brings warmth, and the temperature begins to rise gradually. In summer it is very hot, normally above 30 degrees centigrade, usually from June to August. In autumn, the temperature is normally very pleasant in October and early November and the wind is quite gentle. People feel like going out and travelling around. But in winter, it is usually a little bit cold and the biting wind blows through the area. 2. Have students read the leaflet on page 8 and answer the following questions. (1) What is weather? What is climate? Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time with regard to heat, wind, rain, etc. Climate is the typical long-term pattern of weather in a particular area. (2) What factors affect climate? The most significant factors are: distance from the equator, height above sea level, winds, and ocean currents. Human activity is also one of the factors. (3) What is the main cause of climate change? 批　注 The main cause would seem to be human activity increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. 3. Have students answer the questions in part A on page 8. (1) How do you understand “climate is what you can expect but weather is what you actually get”? Climate is the expected typical pattern of weather that generally does not change, while weather changes on a daily basis and may sometimes be unexpected. (2) What is unusual about climate change in recent years? The temperatures of the Earth have been rising at their quickest rate ever. (3) What kind of human activity impacts on the world’s climate? Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, while cutting down trees reduces the planet’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide. In China’s Xishuangbanna, which has a warm and damp climate, the Dai people build two-storey bamboo houses supported by bamboo posts. This design raises the houses high above the wet ground and enables air to flow more easily through the buildings.
