The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, analyzed what the structure of social networks says about the state of health, happiness and stress. “We were interested in the topology (拓扑学) of the social network—what my position within my social network predicts about my health and wellbeing,”said Nitesh V. Chawla, an educationalist at the University of Notre Dame in the US. “What we found was that the social network structure provides a significant improvement in predictability of wellness states of an individual over just using the data obtained from wearables, like the number of steps or heart rates,” Chawla said. For the study, participants wore a Fitbit to capture health behaviour data about walking, sleeping, heart rates and overall activity level. They also completed surveys and selfassessments of their stress, happiness and positivity. Chawla and his team then analyzed the data with a machine learning model, alongside the association and characteristics of an individual's social network. The study showed a strong correlation (关联) between social network structures, heart rates, the number of steps and level of activity. Social network structure provided extraordinary improvement in predicting one's health and wellbeing in contrast to just looking at health behaviour data from the Fitbit alone. For example, when social network structure was combined with the data from wearables, the machine learning model achieved a 65 percent improvement in predicting happiness. The model also achieved a 54 percent improvement in predicting one's selfassessed health prediction, a 55 percent improvement in predicting the positive attitude and a 38 percent improvement in predicting success. This study asserts (断言) that without social network information, we only have an incomplete view of an individual's wellness state.“To be fully predictive or to be able to obtain intervention (干预), it is critical to be aware of the social network,” Chawla said. 1.What did the study find? A.How people choose their friend circles. B.What factors decide your friend circles. C.How your circle of friends influences you. D.What your circle of friends says about your health. 2.How did the researchers draw their conclusions? A.By comparing data. B.By giving examples. C.By analyzing the cause and effect. D.By describing personal experiences. 3.What does the underlined word “critical” mean in the last paragraph? A.Easy. B.Common. C.Important. D.Challenging. 4.What do Chawla's words in the last paragraph tell us? A.How fitness devices can connect your circle of friends. B.A person's social network is part of his health picture. C.The best ways to make friends and keep a healthy social circle. D.The wearable devices are not useful for understanding someone's health. 根据第一段中的“Your circle of friends may help you get a better reading of your overall health and wellness”可知,你的朋友圈可能会帮助你更好地了解你的整体健康状况,故选D。] 根据最后一段的“This study asserts (断言) that without social network information,we only have an incomplete view of an individual's wellness state.” 根据最后一段的“To be fully predictive or to be able to obtain intervention (干预),it is critical to be aware of the social network(要想充分预测或者能够获得干预,了解社交网络非常重要)”可推断,最后一段中查瓦拉的话告诉我们一个人的社交网络是他的健康状况的一部分。故选B。] B Parents often put their own relationship on the back burner to concentrate on their children, but a new study shows that when spouses (配偶) love each other, their children stay in school longer and marry later in life. Research on how the affection between parents shapes their children's longterm life outcomes is rare because the data demands are high. This study uses unique data from families in Nepal to provide new evidence. The study, coauthored by researchers at the University of Michigan and McGill University in Quebec, was published in the journal Demography. “In this study, we see that parents' emotional connection to each other affects children's growth so much that it shapes their children's future,” said coauthor and UM Institute for Social Research researcher William Axinn. “The fact that we found these kinds of things in Nepal moves us to step closer to evidence that these things are universal.” The study uses data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study in Nepal. The survey was launched in 1995, and collected information from more than one hundred neighborhoods in the Western Chitwan Valley. Married couples were interviewed at the same time but separately, and were asked to assess the level of affection they had for their partner. The spouses answered “How much do you love your husband/wife? Very much, some, a little, or not at all?” The researchers then followed the children of these parents for 12 years to document their education and marital (婚姻的) behavior. They found that the children of the parents who reported they loved each other either “some” or “very much” stayed in school longer and married later. “A family isn't just an institution. It's not like a school. It is a place where we have emotions and feelings,”said lead author Sarah BraunerOtto, director of the Centre on Population Dynamics at McGill University. The researchers say that their next important question will be to identify why parental love impacts children in this way. 5.Why is research on the influence of parents' love on children's lives rarely done? A.Few scientists show passion. B.The data are demanding. C.Evidence can't be collected. D.Parents sometimes don't tell the truth. 6.What can be learned about the study from Paragraph 4? A.It started in the 19th century. B.It used information from many western countries. C.Couples were interviewed together. D.Couples needed to make an assessment of their closeness degree. 7.Which of the following will Sarah BraunerOtto agree? A.A family is like a school. B.A family really matters. C.Home is the best place. D.All happy families are alike. 由第二段中的“Research on how the affection between parents shapes their children's longterm life outcomes is rare because the data demands are high.” 根据文章第四段中的“and were asked to assess the level of affection they had for their partner”可知,夫妻被要求对自己和配偶之间的亲近程度作出评价。 由文章最后一段中的“A family isn't just an institution. It's not like a school. It is a place where we have emotions and feelings”可推知,Sarah BraunerOtto认为家庭很重要,故选B。] Ⅱ. I dropped out of college after my freshman year.
