B Matt counted his new year gifts one more time as he tucked a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. He prepared gifts for everyone for the next day’s party. When Matt got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Robins and looked around shyly. “This is Dorothy,” said Ms. Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today?” Matt raised his hand. He liked helping new kids feel welcome. “Thanks, Matt,” Ms. Robins said. “Now let’s get busy with our work so we’re done in time for the party.” That’s when Matt realized he didn’t have a gift for Dorothy. No one else would have one either. He felt a sad lump in his stomach. As he showed Dorothy around, he was careful not to mention the party. At lunchtime, he walked Dorothy to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Dorothy had brought a packed lunch, so Matt showed her where she should sit and went back to his usual seat. While eating, Matt suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they exchanged. An idea popped into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering. When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Matt told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins agreed with a nodding smile. It was math time, so Matt invited Dorothy to study with him. He made sure Dorothy sat with her back to the room so she wouldn't notice her new classmates passing around an exquisite paper bag Ms. Robins prepared to collect their candy hearts. Before long, it was party time. They played games and then had cookies and juice. Finally, they passed out their gifts. The room buzzed with happy chatter. Matt saw the sad look on Dorothy’s face as she glanced at other kids’ desks overflowing with envelopes. “Here’s your gift, Dorothy,” Matt said, placing the paper bag in front of her. “It’s from everyone.” Dorothy stared at the beautiful bag full of “hearts”. “We wanted you to have a special New Year's Day too,” said Matt. “Thank you,” Dorothy said, smiling at her new classmates. “It really is a special day!” 24.Why did Matt feel a sad lump in his stomach? A. He was guilty for forgetting about Dorothy. B. He was worried that Dorothy would be angry. C. He was afraid Dorothy wouldn’t like the party. D. He was concerned that Dorothy would feel left out. 25. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 3? A. Keeping the party a secret. B. Gathering candy hearts as a gift. C. Inviting Dorothy to study together. D. Including candy hearts in every gift. 26. Which of the following words best describes Matt? A. Innovative. B. Considerate. C. Modest. D. Generous. 27. What’s the best title for the text? A. A Hearty Welcome B. A New Year Tradition C. The First Day of School D. The Reward of Kindness C Opinions differ on the question of whether it is better to live in the city or in the countryside. However, due to the rapid upward trend in house prices in cities, people are increasingly choosing to move to a rural(乡村的) area. Reason enough to take a closer look at the arguments for living in the city and in the country. Living in the city continues to be extremely popular. The proportion of the population living in rural areas has been falling continuously since the middle of the 19th century which was marked by industrialization(工业化). More and more people moved to the cities to find work. Infrastructure is one of the biggest advantages of cities. A well-developed network of public transportation often makes that a car is not absolutely necessary. In the countryside, on the other hand, you almost always need a car to be flexible(灵活的). Related to infrastructure, mobility is also an argument for living in the city. Very often, rural regions are not or only connected to the rail network and also do not have an adequate bus system. In the cities, there is a wide range of entertaining options, from cultural opportunities and other clubs. The latter, however, are increasingly found in the countryside as well. In addition, rural areas offer many options for outdoor activities. The expansion of digital networks is still in its beginnings in some rural regions. Here, the city clearly has the better offer. However, this is set to change, and various research projects and plans to expand digital networks are intended to promote the connection of rural residential areas. 28. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To introduce the main topic. B. To raise readers’ interest. C. To put forward a reason. D. To present different opinions. 29. What resulted in the growth of the population in cities? A. Colorful outdoor activities. B. Low housing prices. C. More job opportunities. D. Strong cultural atmosphere. 30. What is the author’s attitude towards life in the countryside? A. Uncaring. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Grateful. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. The means of transportation in the city. B. The similarities between different cultures. C. The advantages of living in the countryside. D. The different views on living in the city or the rural area D For thousands of years, humans have used names to communicate with one another. We also give names to animals, especially ones we love, such as pets. Until now there has been little evidence of animals naming one another, but a new study suggests that elephants use specific noises to identify other elephants. A few animals, including parrots and dolphins, have been known to use sounds that are similar to names. Each dolphin invents a signature whistle that is unique to it, and other members of its species communicate with it by imitating (模仿) this special call. The new study, led by Michael Pardo of Colorado State University, shows that wild African elephants use names in a way that is not just copying sounds and is much closer to the way humans use names. For the study, the researchers recorded 625 sounds made by wild African elephants in Kenya that they called “rumbles (隆隆声)”. This is the most common type of call produced by elephants, and it can travel long distances-as far as 3. 7 miles. It takes place at a very low frequency, which means humans can’t hear it. The researchers analyzed the sounds using computers and found that certain rumbles were directed at specific elephants to get their attention. They found that all the elephants in the herd used the identical call to get a particular elephant’s attention-these calls were not just nicknames used by one of the elephant’s friends. Also, unlike the way dolphins communicate, the rumbles were not imitations of the elephant they were trying to communicate with. The researchers then played back some of the recorded rumbles to the elephants. They found that elephants responded more to their own name than to other calls, coming toward it more quickly or calling back faster. Caitlin O’Connell-Rodwell, an elephant expert, said, “The study shows that elephants can still keep in touch with one another even across a large area. ” She told Live Science, “It allows them to spread out much further and still have very close tabs (密切关注) on individuals. “ 32. How can elephants recognize others according to the new study? A. By employing certain sounds. B. By using a signature whistle. C. By giving out specific smells. D. By adopting particular postures. 33. What can be inferred about Michael Pardo’s research? A. Its findings were not accepted by the public. B. It asked researchers to analyze elephants’ lives. C. Its researchers needed to engage in outdoor work. D. It revealed elephants’ sounds are at a high frequency. 34. Why do elephants use the same call? A. To get noticed by the herd. B. To imitate other elephants. C. To lead the way for other elephants. D. To draw a specific elephant’s attention. 35. Which of the following does Caitlin O’Connell-Rodwell agree with? A. Elephants only respond to their own names. B. Elephants can walk very far without losing the way. C. Rumbles can help elephants interact with each other. D. Rumbles are imitations of the elephant they were communicating with. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) How to Make Your Online Shopping Safer? There’s every reason in the world to shop online. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs. Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs(零工), determined to do everything in my power to support her. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing. Unfortunately, a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me. It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary. That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content(让她心满意足). Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs. Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs(零工), determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks. After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to(提起)the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us. Para1: One day, however, Mary came with good news. Para2: When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Para1: One day, however, Mary came with good news. Para2: When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. One day, however, Mary came with good news. “There will be a talent competition in our school! Why not participate and showcase your singing talent?” she proposed, her voice filled with encouragement. A look of anticipation flashed across Jane's face. Nevertheless, it gave way to her expression of frustration. “Don’t let anything stop you from pursuing your dream,” I whispered gently, grasping her hand tightly. Having heard my encouraging words, Jane lifted her head, with her eyes glistening with newfound confidence. In the following days, Jane rehearsed tirelessly for the competition, determined to overcome the challenges posed by her physical limitations. When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. At the sight of Jane and her wheel, the audience was so astonished that their eyes widened and mouths were slightly agape. Sitting in her wheelchair, Jane took a deep breath and then started singing. Absorbed in the sweet voice, some audience even shed tears, deeply moved by her performance. As the last note faded away, thunderous applause broke out. Watching Jane bow to the audience, I felt my heart overflowed with a mix of immense pride and happiness. At that moment, it dawned on me that Jane had rediscovered her dream against all odds and I felt incredibly proud to have such a daughter.
