Great read This was a cute lighthearted book that explores the life of a Craigslist addict, and how Craiglist, a large free classifieds (分类广告) website, got her through her life so far. The story was well thought out and pretty realistic when it comes to life struggles. It gets a little unbelievable towards the end, and I don’t like it when authors conform to the ‘the world is perfect’ viewpoint most books have, but, that my pessimist breaking through. The book needs some serious editing. She’s repeated the same exact line 3-4 times a couple of and ... (click for more) Kindle Customer 3.0 out of 5 stars Would Have Given it 4 stars, but ... The hard work started before daybreak and lasted well into the blistering heat of the afternoon. To get out of there, she was going to get an education. Her parents tried to save some money to send her to college, but unexpected bills kept hitting the fund. Then a teacher announced that the state was going to give a college scholarship to the two top students from her year. Finally, West got the scholarship, allowing her to attend Virginia State College, a historically black university. West decided to major in mathematics because it was a well-respected subject. It was largely studied by men, but she didn’t take much notice of them as she knew deep in her heart that nothing was getting in her way. After graduating, she became a teacher. A few years later, she returned to the university and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. Then she was offered a job at a naval base in Dahlgren, Virginia. This made her only the second black woman to be hired to work as a programmer at the base. Despite her intellectual abilities and career success, West felt she was inferior. It was this feeling, deeply rooted and felt, by many African Americans that drove her to work as hard as she could. West determined to commit herself to her work, hoping that by doing it to the best of her ability, she could get recognition for her work. West did just that. In 1979, she became project manager for the Seasat project, the first satellite that could monitor the oceans. She programmed an IBM 7030 Stretch computer, providing faster calculations for an accurate Earthmodel. This detailed mathematical model of the shape of the Earth was a building block for what would become the GPS orbit. In 1998, aged 68, she intended to focus on her PhD after retirement. She eventually finished her graduation thesis and gained her PhD in public administration and policy affairs in 2000 at the age of 70. 4. What helps Gladys West to go to the university? A. Her teacher’s aiding her. B. Her parents’ paying for the expenses. C. Her family background. D. The scholarship from the government. 5. What can we infer from the text? A. West got all her degrees after retirement. B Men dominated maths field in West’s days. C. Black women scientists ' talent was fully appreciated. D. When she began to work, West felt she was superior to others. 6. What does the underlined phrase “a building block” in paragraph 5 mean? A. A basic part. B. A detailed map. C. A building material. D. A major obstacle. 7. What kind of person is Gladys West? A. Helpful and serious. B. Honest and hardworking. C. Ambitious and committed. D. Considerate and devoted. C Colleen Wisinski has a tough job: Relocating tiny, adorable owls before their grassland homes are taken over by urban development in California. Developers are required by the state to safely remove western burrowing owls(穴居猫头鹰)from their land. Despite their name, western burrowing owls—found across dry grasslands from Canada to South America — don’t burrow, they borrow. The 10-inch-tall birds hole up in abandoned holes made by prairie dogs and ground squirrels, hunting insects and small mammals during the day and nesting with up to a dozen of their chicks at night. Because they don’t dig their own homes, their adopted holes are crucial to their survival. Recently, this habitat loss of the ground squirrels is the main reason why they have rapidly decreased in the state. Lose the host species who digs the hole, lose the owls. Nowadays, Wisinski and his research team have designed some new tools to keep this little creature safe. The team worked with various government agencies to select protected grasslands for the owls. At 11 holes of the owls which were equipped with satellite control backpacks that allowed the researchers to track their movements, the researchers settled new homes in those locations with the owl wastes, both real and fake. Nearby speakers played burrowing owl calls in an effort to make the new arrivals feel at home. After one month, the relocated owls that received the audio and visual cues(线索)were 20 times more likely to stay close to their new homes than the translocated owls without the cues, according to a new research in the journal Animal Conservation. “It’s meaningful that we can get the owls settled down in a secure, protected area,” Wisinski says. “In the long run, that habitat will be managed well for them, and they’ll have better places to live in”. 8. What is Wisinski’s new job recently? A. Researching the habit of the owls. B. Offering the owls new homes. C. Participating in urban construction. D. Clearing away the owls’ nests. 9. What is the major cause for the burrowing owls to remove from their land? A. Urban development. B. Inadequate food. C. Climate change. D. Increase of host species. 10. What can we learn about the relocated owls? A. Their new homes were monitored by satellites. B. Their living condition is still worrying. C. The researchers’ method worked for them. D. They adjust to the new environment easily. 11. What’s the suitable title for the text? A. Western Burrowing Owls, a Rare Species B. Welcome to Your New Home, a Little Creature C. The Future of Urban Development in California D. Protect the Endangered Animals Together D NASA’s Lunar Flashlight (the CubeSat), a small satellite, was launched on Dec. 11, 2022 to demonstrate (演示) several new technologies, with the goal to map ice near the Moon’s South Pole. Since then, the briefcase-size satellite’s propulsion (推进) system — the first of its kind ever flown — proved unable to generate enough force to get into lunar orbit, despite months of effort by the operations team. Because the CubeSat cannot complete operations to stay in the Earth-Moon system, NASA has called an end to the mission. NASA relies on technology demonstrations to fill specific knowledge gaps and to test new technologies. Used for the first time beyond Earth’s orbit, Lunar Flashlight’s propulsion system and green fuel were such demonstrations. Although the propulsion system was unable to produce the desired force, the newly developed propulsion system components went beyond performance expectations. “Technology demonstrations are, by their nature, high risk and high reward, and they’re essential for NASA to test and learn,” said Christopher Baker, the program executive. “Lunar Flashlight was successful from the standpoint of being a test bed for new systems that had never flown in space before. Those systems, and the lessons Lunar Flashlight taught us, will be used for future missions.” The mission’s four-laser reflectometer, a science instrument that had never flown before, either, also tested successfully, giving the mission’s science team confidence that the laser would have been able to detect ice if it were present at the lunar surface. “It’s disappointing for the science team, and for the whole Lunar Flashlight team, that we won’t be able to use our laser reflectometer to make measurements on the Moon,” said Barbara Cohen, the mission’s principal investigator: “But like all the other systems, we collected a lot of in-flight performance data on the instrument that will be incredibly valuable to future application of this technique.” 12. What is the goal of the CubeSat? A. To get into lunar orbit. B. To seek out ice on the Moon. C. To obtain green energy. D. To test the propulsion system. 13. Why did NASA end the mission? A. The team lost its contact. B. The system ran out of fuel. C. The target was achieved. D. The satellite was in trouble. 14. What are paragraph 2 & 3 mainly about? A. Lunar Flashlight’s future is uncertain. B. Lunar Flashlight presents a major risk. C. Lunar Flashlight is of great significance. D. Lunar Flashlight enjoys an all-round success. 15. What is Barbara Cohen’s attitude toward the mission? A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Positive. D. Cautious. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) If the only reading you ever do is the novel or magazine, the speed at which you read -probably does not matter very much.
