I used to be very shy, so I usually just listened to other people’s conversations. My teacher, Mrs. Smith, always encouraged me to communicate with others.
One day, she told us that our class would put on a play she had written. “I need someone to play the lead role. Does anyone want to try?” she asked. A few hands were raised—mine wasn’t one of them. Mrs. Smith walked up to me and said, “I think you’re perfect for it, but you didn’t raise your hand.”
Me, the lead? Was she crazy? Mrs. Smith continued, “I was thinking of you when I created the role! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you.” Suddenly, I thought it was time to throw away my shyness and show the world who I really was. I looked at Mrs. Smith and said, “OK, I’ll try.”
After five months of practicing, the big day finally arrived. My knees shook and my heart beat like I’d just run a mile. “It doesn’t matter how the performance will be,” said Mrs. Smith, as if reading my thoughts. “You’ve already shown yourself how wonderful you are. What comes to your mind when you read the word “robot”? Many people think about big and modern machines in car factories, or films. Few of us think about the past. In fact, people made machines with human abilities thousands of years ago.
Philo, an ancient Greek inventor, made a robot thousands of years ago. If someone placed a cup in the robot’s hand, it would mix water and wine to make a drink. However, it wasn’t popular because people didn’t need robots to work at that time.
Another ancient robot was a robotic arm called “The Claw”. Polybius, a Greek writer, wrote about it in 213 BC. It was built during a war (战争) with the Romans and it was hung over the city wall towards the sea. When a Roman ship came close, the robot would catch the front of it and throw it into the air. Then the ship would fall into the sea and go down.
Leonardo da Vinci, a famous artist, loved designing robots. Few of his designs were built, but his plans were perfect. Mark Rosheim, a robot engineer, still learns from those ideas when he works! One of Leonardo da Vinci’s robots was a lion. He built it in 1515. It could walk and send flowers! In 2009, engineers used the plans to rebuild the robot lion. It worked very well.
As time went by, more robots were built, and they could do more difficult work, such as writing and drawing a picture. Although modern technology has moved on, these historical robots still surprise people today.

For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing could buy her lunch at a community canteen (社区食堂) in Hangzhou. She had a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice—all very healthy. “The dishes have a home-cooked taste.” said Fang.
Community canteens have become more and more popular in China recently. They were made for the old people at first. It can be difficult for some old people to cook on their own, so the canteens offer help. They can have lunch and dinner within a 10-minute walk, or community workers can bring the dishes to them. Zhang Suxia, a worker at a community canteen in Hangzhou, said that the cooks made special meals for the old. The food is soft and has less oil.
Now, the community canteens are bringing in more young people. For those who don’t want to order takeout meals or eat at restaurants, they can have healthier and cheaper dishes in the canteens.
This also encourages community canteens to think of creative ways to serve food and make things easier for people. A canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community brings out buffet-style (自助模式) dishes. The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. The price is lower than those of restaurants close by.
There wouldn’t be so many community canteens without the work of local governments. They give subsidies (补贴) for building the canteens as well as the dining cost of the old people. There are now more than 6,700 community canteens in China, according to Tianyancha.

I think the photo named My Favourite Visit is great. It shows two children visiting their grandparents with their parents. The family are wearing new clothes and carrying some nice presents. Everyone looks happy.
Visiting relatives is one of the most important traditions during the Spring Festival. It’s my favourite as well. Every Spring Festival, my family pay visits to our relatives. Like the family in the photo, we also prepare presents that are proper to show our best wishes. During the visits, family members get together and have great fun talking.
That’s the most important thing.”
I smiled because I knew she was right. When I stepped on the stage (舞台), I showed that I could take chances and be brave enough to make a big change for myself—a girl with new-found confidence (信心).

8. What can we learn about Philo?
A. He invented a drink. B. He was a German inventor.
C. He wasn’t popular in his time. D. He was born thousands of years ago.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The robot. B. The city wall. C. The ship. D. The air.
10. Which of the following words can be used to describe Leonardo da Vinci according to Para. 4?
A. Perfect. B. Talented. C. Good-looking. D. Hard-working.
11. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A few interesting ancient stories.
B. What the most famous ancient robots were.
C. Some amazing robots from ancient times.
D. The differences between ancient robots and modern ones.

41. Who were the community canteens first built for?
_______________________________
42. What is special about the food for the old according to Zhang Suxia?
