(2025·河北邢台模拟预测)During my graduate studies, countless workshops taught me one thing:To make it in science, one must design and carry out big projects. As I established my own research lab,a senior colleague encouraged me to try something big.So when I landed an associate professor position,my goal seemed obvious:I should perform big projects. This was the only way to lay a foundation for a successful academic research career. The path, however, would not be as clear as I had pictured.
When I contacted famous researchers to suggest cooperating,as is typically required for highprofile projects, they frequently replied enthusiastically to start, agreeing my project sounded interesting and promising. But when they learned I had just established my lab, they became skeptical and hesitant, ultimately saying no.And when I sought grant funding,my lack of experience and reputation was cited as a reason to deny support for my ambitious proposals.
I spent about two years being stuck in this mindset, excited about my big ideas but making little actual progress, leading to frustration and depression. As I neared my breaking point,I began to ask myself:Were big projects really the only route?
When I shifted to small projects,I became brave enough to step into fields I was not familiar with.By reading papers in new areas,I found creative ideas to pursue. When I discussed these adventurous, lowcost projects with earlycareer researchers, they were glad to cooperate. We secured funding. When I published papers out of these projects, they were not exciting enough to make headlines—but for me,it was a moment of joy and selfcontentment.
It has now been 3 years since I embraced this “small” approach.Sometimes senior colleagues say I'm wasting time with projects that aren't important enough. But I disagree. When I do these studies,I also find clues for future big projects.Going forward,I will still commit part of my time to exploring small projects, which I think can help pursue more fundamental questions.
4.What is the author trying to do with big projects?
A.Pursue his graduate studies.
B.Seek a route to academic success.
C.Apply for an associate professorship.
D.Establish an academic research center.
5.What prevented the author pursuing his big project?
A.Lack of necessary support.
B.The toughness of work.
C.Shortage of academic talents.
D.The opposition from colleagues.
6.How did the author carry out his small project?
A.By publishing influential papers.
B.By getting young colleagues' funding.
C.By exploring and initiating new ideas.
D.By cooperating with senior colleagues.
7.What does the author learn from his experience?
A.Good jobs require a high degree.
B.Ambition isn't fit for the young.
C.Success results from preparation.
D.Small doesn't mean unimportant.

UNIT 4 限时规范练(B)
(限时30分钟)
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture.
Culture begins with the “honeymoon stage”.This is the period of time when we first arrive in a country where everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food.
Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life,we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, and pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture.
The third stage comes when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture.Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place.Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor.
The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”.Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called “reverse culture shock”.Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home.Life is a struggle!
1.When does culture shock happen?
A.When you reach your teens.
B.When you begin an urban life.
C.When you go to live in a foreign culture.
D.When you meet foreign people for the first time.
2.How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock?
A.Happy and excited.
B.Bored and homesick.
C.Lonely and depressed.
D.Angry and frustrated.
3.How could the third stage be described?
A.Adjustment. B.Rejection.
C.Enthusiasm. D.Embarrassment.
4.Why might reverse culture shock be a problem?
A.It hardly ever happens.
B.It is extremely stressful.
C.It is out of expectation.
D.It only happens to young people.

One of the improv(即兴表演) classes I attended regularly was taught by Jim Cranna every Saturday afternoon.Sometimes,as many as twentyfive to sixtyplus folks showed up.Jim made sure to fit everyone in so they could improve their skills. The class lasted for three hours. The usual cast of comic actors played improv comedy games. And we would go to the nearest mini market located in the building and get a snack or coffee during breaks.
One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin Williams—an internationally famous actor and comic walked by,enjoying the fresh bay air.Completely frozen,my fellow comics couldn't summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend.I froze for a moment, but then I composed myself.
I told them,“Hey,if you guys can't handle it,then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath,“Yeah, sure, right. You're going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class.Good luck with that one!”
So I went up to Robin and his friend and asked him to join us.“We're having an improv comedy class. We're on break now,but we would be most humbled and honored if you would join us for the second half of the class.”Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation,“Okay.” It was like a grownup child being asked to come and play. With that,he and his friend followed me up to the class.
When he saw Robin,Jim said,“Oh my goodness, look who Micheline is bringing to class.”Jim's eyes were all in astonishment and delight.“Why,it's Robin Williams!” Robin and his friend stayed the rest of the class and at the end of the class,Robin and Jim performed a skit(滑稽短剧).We actually watched him shapeshift as he prepared physically and mentally for his madeup character. He gave it his all.It was truly magical.
What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn't mustered up the courage to ask Robin to join us,none of us would have had that experience.
5.What does the underlined word “composed” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Looked down. B.Calmed down.
C.Maked up. D.Picked up.
6.What did the author want to show by telling the experience?
A.It's never too late to mend.
B.Every cloud has a silver lining.
C.A brave attempt is half success.
D.Actions speak louder than words.
7.What can be inferred from the text?
A.It was the author's bravery that moved Robin Williams.
B.Jim Cranna was waiting for Robin Williams to come to the class.
C.Robin Williams gave a lecture on playing improv comedy games.
D.Micheline's friends didn't have the nerve to invite Robin Williams.
8.What kind of person was Robin Williams most likely to be?

7.D [解析]推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Completely frozen,my fellow comics couldn't summon up the courage to just say ‘hi’ to Robin, who was with a friend.”和第三段中的“I told them,‘Hey,if you guys can't handle it,then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.’”可知,作者的同伴见到著名喜剧演员Robin Williams时全都愣住了,甚至不敢上前和他打招呼,更不敢鼓起勇气邀请Robin Williams。故选D。
8.A [解析]推理判断题。文章第二段“One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin Williams—an internationally famous actor and comic walked by,enjoying the fresh bay air.”提到,Robin Williams很出名;再根据第四段中的“Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation,‘Okay.’”可知,作者邀请Robin Williams为他们上课的时候,他毫不犹豫地答应了,由此可知,Robin Williams是个平易近人的人。故选A。
