(2025·吉林长春·中考真题)You can smell it before you see it. The sweet smell of sugar, eggs and cream fills the air. Once it is made to perfection, the inside is soft and the outside is crispy. A shiny and golden surface catches the eye.
This, as you may have guessed, is the delicious egg tart (蛋挞). It’s the famous dessert of Wong’s cafe, one of the most popular places to eat in Macao. The sweet dessert is made fresh every day by the cafe’s owner Margaret Wong.
Few people know egg tarts better than Wong. After all, she created this dessert together with her husband Stow. Some people say Margaret’s egg tarts are special, because they taste neither Western nor Chinese. According to Wong, that is exactly the point.
It all started when Wong and Stow opened their first cake house. Someone asked Stow to make some cream cakes. The first plate of cakes came out burnt and wrong, and Stow wanted to throw them away. But Wong said, “Hold on a minute. They can still be eaten. Don’t waste food.” The couple let people try them for free. Unexpectedly, the customers loved them. They have ordered more and more egg tarts from then on. More than thirty years flies. The method of making Margaret’s egg tarts remains the same.
Whenever people talk about Macao, they mention egg tarts. Every day, hundreds of tourists and locals line up at Wong’s cafe. “Sometimes people walk in and say ‘Can I just have one egg tart?’ And I have to tell them, ‘Not even a small piece is left.’” Wong says with a smile.

(2023·吉林长春·中考真题)A king once offered a prize. Anyone could get it if he painted the best picture of peace. Many famous artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures and among them there were only two he really liked. But he had to choose between them.
The first picture was of a quiet lake. Around the lake were peaceful mountains. Above them was a blue sky with white clouds. Everyone seeing this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The second picture had mountains too. But few trees could be seen. Above them was a dark, angry sky. A heavy rainstorm was happening. Down the side of the mountain ran a powerful waterfall. It did not look peaceful at all. However, the king felt it was special. At midnight, the king looked carefully at the second picture again. Suddenly, he found behind the waterfall a small tree growing between two rocks. A mother bird built her home in the tree. There, in the middle of all the noise of rushing water and frightening skies, that mother bird sat in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think the king chose? The king chose the second picture because he thought it better expressed peace. “Peace does not mean you must be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or pain. When you think of the cinema, the phrase “watching a movie” probably comes to mind, and, in fact, moviemakers work very hard to make the pictures wonderful. But movies also contain stories, dialogues, music, and sound effects which people don’t need to see in order to enjoy.
Movie reviewer, Marty Klein, has created a website called Blindspots to help blind people choose movies that they can follow without the help of an assistant to explain what is happening on the screen.
Of course, blind or visually impaired people can enjoy many films with the help of a helper who doesn’t mind explaining the parts of a movie that can only be seen. But that means that someone is talking during the movie, which could annoy some audience members. To solve these problems movie theaters provide wireless headsets with which blind people can hear a recorded narration (解说). This allows them to listen to the narration while still hearing a movie’s music and other sounds.
Another blind movie reviewer, Jay Forry, writes movie reviews on his website, Blindside Reviews. He also writes for newspapers and is a guest on radio shows. Forry became a writer after going blind at the age of 28. His first review appeared in the college newspaper. Both Forry’s writing skills and sense of humor are what keep people reading his review or listening to them on the radio. After “watching” The Sixth Sense, Forry thought the movie was excellent, but that he envied (嫉妒) the main character, “He had six senses, and I only have four.”

Do you find it hard to keep your promise of not overspending?
It all started with a promise not to overspend. And for the first couple of days, I managed to keep it. But then... oops! On the fourth day, I took out my credit card (信用卡) and did it again!
Do you have such experience? If you are too young to spend freely, think about your favorite snack. We often know what we should do, but why do we keep doing the opposite?
Many people turn to experts for advice. They tell you to keep away from social media and friends who overspend to control the stimulus (刺激). Then, the experts suggest you control your spending: Cut up your credit cards.
Such advice helps at first, but soon it stops working. Let’s face it: You can’t avoid every advertisement pushing you to buy something.
Here’s a secret that has helped me break my terrible spending cycle. There is a space between the stimulus and answer to it. And our choice lies in the space.
We see a social media post (帖子) about a book with a connection to Taobao. A quick click, and the book is on its way. That’s how I had unread books all over my office. Now I follow the “72-hour rule”. When I see an interesting book, I put it on a list. If I still want it 72 hours later, I’ll go ahead and buy it.
How you create this little “spending space” depends on you, but I think you can give the “72-hour rule” a try.

Dear Allan,
My name is Xiaojing. In junior high school I put a lot of efforts into English learning and made good progress with the help of my teacher. Now, I’m excited about going to senior high school in September.
Yesterday, my elder sister said to me, “You ought to memorize more new words during the summer vacation because you will find there is a large vocabulary in a single text when you study in senior high school. Besides, grammatical rules will be more confusing (令人困惑的).”
I love English. I do hope to keep my interest and become a better English learner. Could you please give me some advice?
Eager Xiaojing
Dear Xiaojing,
Glad to know that you love English. It matters. Don’t worry too much about new words and confusing grammatical rules.
For vocabulary learning, my suggestion is to understand and remember new words and expressions in context (上下文). As for grammar learning, you need to understand the building blocks of grammar. They lead up to more complex (复杂的) forms. With enough time, effort and practice, you will not feel confused with grammar any more and finally get a better understanding of it.
From your mail, I know that you’re interested in English and you want to keep your interest in learning it. Here are a few tips for you.
Listening to English songs is a good way. It can not only help to keep your interest in learning English, but also improve your listening skills. In addition, English songs can also be used to practise your pronunciation.
Watching movies, especially animated (动画的) ones, is another interesting way because of their simple dialogues. Moreover, animated movies are usually filled with body language and facial expressions. They can make the dialogues much more understandable.
Just make sure you spend enough time on the language happily. That is the key to success.
Allan

When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him because his parents always made him do lots of housework, such as carrying out the rubbish and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was better off than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
This is one of the cases of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. The study, led by Daniel Brown, a psychologist (心理学家) in the UK, aimed to find out the connection between childhood labor work (劳动) and later life success.
The study followed these children’s lives closely from a very young age. The researchers interviewed them about their lives at the ages of 25, 31, and 47. And they compared two things: how much labor work the children did during their childhood and how successful their later lives were. The study showed that children who did more childhood labor work had a better future. They were more likely to get good pay, overcome difficulties bravely and have good relationships with different people. That’s because childhood labor work can not only help children develop abilities, independence, and a sense of responsibility but also help them understand that people must work together towards common goals.
It’s never too late to start doing labor work today. Get ready and take on every task, no matter how small it is. Always remember, your labor work will bring you closer to a better and happier future.
26.Why did other kids feel sorry for Justin Tong when he was a child?

“Nezha: The Demon Child’s Descent” has recently hit the screens, captivating audiences with its thrilling plot, stunning visuals, and rich cultural elements. It continues Nezha’s legend, the rebellious yet heroic figure in Chinese mythology.
The story picks up where the first movie left off. After defying fate and saving his hometown in the first movie, Nezha, with his unique look - two tufts of hair, a red bellyband, and a fiery spirit, still struggles to find his place.
A new threat, the powerful and malevolent (恶毒的) demon Mo Luo, emerges from the underworld. Mo Luo aims to plunge the world into chaos with his army of lesser demons. Nezha, along with his loyal friend Ao Bing (who overcame past differences in the first movie), must stop them.
One highlight of “Nezha 2” is character development. Nezha, despite being a hero, grapples (努力解决) with inner demons due to past misunderstandings. Some villagers still doubt him, and he must prove himself again. Ao Bing has grown more confident and is determined to stand by Nezha, using his ice - based powers against evil.
The visual effects are amazing. The battles are full of dazzling (耀眼的) lights, explosive magic, and intricate (复杂的) choreography (编排). The underworld, Mo Luo’s lair, is dark and mysterious with strange creatures. In contrast, Nezha’s hometown, Chentangguan, shows bustling markets and traditional architecture.
The movie delves (深入探讨) into Chinese cultural values. It emphasizes friendship, as seen in Nezha and Ao Bing’s stronger bond. Self - acceptance is also key, with Nezha learning to embrace his true self. The concept of justice is explored as they fight Mo Luo’s evil.

(2025·湖北黄冈·三模)My new neighbors are a foreign family. The parents are both English teachers and their son, John, is a student. They asked me whether I would like to teach John some Chinese so that he can communicate with others better, and I said yes.
At first, I thought it would be a piece of cake, so I didn’t really prepare for it in advance (提前). However, it is easier said than done. When I started teaching John, I came to know that there is so much culture and history in our language. Why are there four tones (音调) in Chinese? Who invented Chinese characters (汉字)? How come some Chinese characters look like the things they stand for but some don’t?
I came home and was quite ashamed (羞愧的) as I didn’t know answers to those questions. I always thought as Chinese, teaching Chinese was easy, but it turned out that it was not. Chinese language is rich in culture. What we learned about Chinese in school was just a small part of it.

TCM wins the hearts of young people for its effectiveness (有效性).
Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a 3-month training course—Acupuncture and Tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her living habits after learning the Five Elements theory (五行学说). For example, she avoided sweating (流汗) too much during exercise in winter because the cold of winter means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about accepting a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people loving TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people had tried different TCM treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang.
Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM because of its effectiveness, according to Ma.
Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions (处方). “This is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, because it can be a more accurate (精准的) treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are welcoming TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Jin noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture.”
66.How long did Jin Ying spend on the training course in 2023?
67.Which sport is better for people’s health in winter, runing fast or walking slowly?
68.How many young people tried TCM treatments according to the survey?
69.Why does TCM treat the same illnesses with different prescriptions?
70.Will you choose to lean TCM, why or why not?

The fish spoke to him in a human voice, “Please let me go, and I will give you anything you want.” The kind fisherman set the fish free without asking for anything.

A lot of countries need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this. Sometimes plants can’t grow in a country because of bad weather or disease, so farmers need new seeds.
You can keep seeds in a “seed vault”. It’s a place at a special temperature. The seeds don’t grow, but they can live for a long time. Norway has the biggest seed vault in the world — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and it has seeds from a lot of different countries.
The vault is on the island of Spitsbergen. The island is about one thousand kilometers from the North Pole. It’s a very cold place so it’s good for seeds. Above the ground, the doorway is small, but inside, the building is huge. You walk down a long corridor (走廊), which is one hundred and thirty meters inside a mountain. At the end of it, there are three large areas with seeds.
There are about half a million kinds of seeds inside the vault. For example, there are kinds of seeds for rice from Asia and Africa, 32 kinds of seeds for potatoes from Ireland and seeds for different tomatoes from the USA.The seed vault has space for a lot more seeds. You can put about 2.2 billion seeds inside.
The seeds can live here for thousands of years because of the cold temperature of-18℃. So in the future, humans can grow any seed they want. In other words, the seed vault is the difference between life and death.

The Power of a Thank-You Note
Last month, 15-year-old Lily received a special gift from her English teacher, Mrs. Green. It wasn’t a book or a pen, but a simple piece of advice: “Write thank-you notes to the people who have helped you.”
At first, Lily thought it was just another school assignment. But as she started writing, she realized how meaningful it could be. She wrote to her parents, thanking them for always supporting her studies and taking care of her. She also sent a note to her best friend, Amy, who had cheered her up during the hardest time of last term. “I never realized how much these small words meant to others,” Lily said.
Mrs. Green started this “thank-you note” project two years ago. She believes that expressing gratitude is an important life skill. “In our busy daily lives, we often forget to show our appreciation,” she explained. “A handwritten note can make someone’s day and strengthen relationships.”
To Lily’s surprise, her thank-you notes brought unexpected results. Her parents were deeply touched and hugged her tightly after reading the note. Amy replied with a long letter, sharing how much Lily’s words meant to her. “I’ve decided to make writing thank-you notes a habit,” Lily said. “It’s a simple way to spread love and kindness.”
96.What was the special gift Lily received from Mrs. Green?
97.Why did Lily think the task was meaningful?
98.How long has Mrs. Green run the “thank-you note” project?

Worldwide, 8.1 million people are waiting for calls from strangers. Some of them consider themselves introverts (内向的). Some say they hate talking on the phone. But as volunteers for Be My Eyes, they all have a kind heart.
Be My Eyes was created in 2015 by Hans Jorgen Wiberg from Denmark. This free app connects blind people with sighted volunteers through video calls for help with everyday tasks. Wiberg used to worry about finding enough volunteers. But today volunteers outnumber blind users by ten to one.
It’s not easy for volunteers to get a call. Zhang Yanfei joined Be My Eyes in 2019 but didn’t receive her first call until four years later. Calls go out to many volunteers at the same time. If one doesn’t respond immediately, another volunteer will take the call.
He Yanyan, a stage actress, hesitated to join at first. She feared missing calls during rehearsals (排练). After learning that other volunteers would cover missed calls, she signed up at once. She received her first call the very next day. A young man nervously asked, “Can this app really help?” Feeling nervous herself, she realized the man was also new to the platform. She described the objects around him. The caller relaxed and asked if he looked tidy. After she told him that his clothes were spotless, the conversation continued for a few more rounds until the call was suddenly cut off. The volunteer wondered if she had sounded unfriendly.
Cao Zhenxiang was also nervous during his first call. After he helped an elderly man check the expiration date (有效期) on his bread, the two thanked each other repeatedly. “I was so nervous that I didn’t even know why I was thanking him,” he said.
Now, Cao feels much more confident. He recently helped a blind person cross the street while working on his computer. “It just felt like chatting with a friend,” he said.
100.As a volunteer, when did Zhang Yanfei get her first call?
101.Why did He Yanyan hesitate to join at first?
102.What did Cao Zhenxiang help the caller do during his first call?

China is making big efforts to help people control their weight and live healthier lives. The government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” plan from 2024 to 2027 to fight against obesity (肥胖). Obesity not only affects appearance but also causes serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. So, weight management has become an important part of many people’s lives. Here’s what you should know about the new guidelines:
First, it’s important to check your BMI (Body Mass Index). For adults, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight. A BMI of 28 or more means you are obese. Also, doctors suggest measuring your waist. Men should keep their waist under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
Eating well is very important, and exercise is just as important! When it comes to food, choose whole grains like brown rice, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins such as fish, chicken, or beans. Don’t eat fried foods and sugary snacks, and also eat less salt and oil.
For exercise, try to do 150-300 minutes of activities like walking, cycling, or dancing every week, and do strength exercises twice a week. If you sit for a long time while studying, stand up and stretch for 3-5 minutes every hour.
Besides diet and exercise, small daily habits can also make a big difference. Teens should sleep 7 hours every night because bad sleep can make you gain weight. Try to eat vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread during a meal to control how much you eat.
Schools and communities are also helping. For example, schools in Shanghai now make sure students exercise for at least two hours every day, and hospitals have “weight loss clinics” with diet plans, exercise advice and even traditional Chinese ways like acupuncture (针灸). By 2030, China hopes to slow down the increase of obesity through education and support.
Remember that losing weight isn’t about being perfect, just start with small changes. Like drinking water instead of soda or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. With these easy steps, everyone can have a healthier future.
104.Why has the government started the three-year “Weight Management Year” plan?
105.According to the guidelines, what is the healthy BMI range mentioned in the text?
106.How much time is recommended to spend on daily physical activities ?
107.What other action do you think schools can take to help students keep a healthy weight? Share your ideas or experiences.
(2025·上海闵行·三模)Hope Beyond the River
For most people, graduation is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to watch the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the economy turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. Almost all of us graduates had degrees, but very uncertain future.
The weeks ahead weren’t easy. I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, so I packed up my things and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the exact same situation as I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up in fear? That feeling became constant (持续不断的) in my life. Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those many months felt like everlasting pain. And the most annoying part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress. So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to write. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer-a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. And if you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I put my dissatisfaction into a children’s book. Beyond the River is the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who refused to give up his dream.
And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or contacts in the writing world - just a lot of hard work and determination - I was offered a publishing contract for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with the Walt Disney Company and was hired shortly after.
Don’t give up. Even if things look tough now, don’t give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Often times our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream. All we need is the courage to push beyond the river.Q&A

As a younger man, Joe saw thousands of fireflies (萤火虫) every summer in southern Arizona. The sight was so magical that he was inspired to become an insect expert and, ever since, the study of the lightning bugs has become his life’s work.
Four decades later, Joe still goes back to those woodlands. Today, though, they’re mostly dark. The fireflies have been disappearing, Joe said. “Down to just a very few compared to the big population they had back then.”
Nearly one in three firefly species in the United States and Canada may die out in the future, scientists say. Studies also show a fall in their numbers from forests in Malaysia to grasslands in England.
The biggest problem facing fireflies today is the loss of their habitats. Fireflies spend most of their lives in their larval (幼虫的) state. But much of the wet soil that young fireflies need to grow is being destroyed. Instead, the lands are used to build houses, golf courses, and for other types of development. The rising sea level has made matters worse. Now it has nowhere else to go.
When the time is right in spring, a young firefly turns into an adult. The adults live for only a few weeks. During this period, they have only one thing on their minds: to find their mates. Fireflies often flicker (闪烁) at each other as night falls. Others wait until midnight to turn on the lights. However, the light we pour into the night makes it harder for them to see each other.
For ordinary people, saving fireflies from climate change and other environmental threats is difficult. But we can help to protect them from light pollution. We should turn off the lights.

(2024·吉林长春·中考真题)Have you ever read Little Women by US writer Louisa May Alcott? The classic has been changed into plays, films and television programs many times because of its popularity since it came out in 1868. It tells a story of a mother raising her four daughters, while their dad is away fighting a war. Meg, the eldest, wants to live a better life very much. Jo, the second-born, wants nothing more than to be a writer. Beth is a sweet girl who loves music and always brings joy to others. The youngest daughter, Amy, dreams of being an artist. After reading Little Women, I have a feeling of warmth and kindness from the family.
In the following scene, the girls talk about what they can buy with the very little money they have. They feel hopeful about the future even though their dreams may not come true.

Dear Allan,
My name is Xiaojing.

Life with Loneliness and Love
At Fenghuang Mountain Zoo one can only find old rusty (生锈的) cages, weak animals and one man. Having run this small zoo alone for 34 years, Luo Yingjiu, 83, serves as director, cleaner, caretaker (管理员) and vet himself.
All animals here have nicknames, like Guai Guai, Qiu Qiu and Shan Shan, which were given by Luo. The zoo used to be an attraction among local people with some large animals such as lions and tigers. However, as they passed away years ago, now there only lives a bear and 20 kinds of small animals in it, including 20 homeless dogs Luo adopted.
Every day is hard. Luo rises before sunrise and cleans the houses of all animals. After that, the old man with all - white hair has to travel downhill to purchase food for the animals. Local people often see Luo struggling to climb the mountain back to the zoo, with heavy bags of food. At night, Luo also needs to keep a close eye on animals, especially those old ones. Guai Guai, a 20 - year - old black bear, gets the most attention from Luo because of her age. Saved by Luo, the bear has spent 18 years in the zoo. When Luo first saw her in a local restaurant, she lay in the corner of the cage, crying out in fright and anger, with one of her paws (爪子) hurt by humans.
Although a ticket only costs 10 yuan per person and it’s free for children, the number of visitors has fallen to just several people a day. To keep animals alive, Luo has spent all his savings and even borrowed money from others. “Many people advise me to close the zoo, but 5. ________,” says Luo.
