Foods such as dim sum, boiled shrimp, roast goose, bite-sized wonton (馄饨) and steamed spareribs with pickled plums (酸梅蒸排骨) are sure to call to mind the taste buds of diners. Travellers can get their fill of this cuisine when exploring the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, making it a fitting choice for winter tours. Mala Hot Pot In recent years, Chinese dishes featuring spicy (辛辣的) and mouth-numbing tastes, known as “mála”, have gained popularity, particularly in Southeast Asia. For foreign tourists who enjoy spicy hot pot, it is advisable to find out the most traditional cuisine in southwest China’s Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, both well-known for their spicy offerings, with restaurants serving such dishes spotted throughout these regions. Beijing Roast Duck A trip to Beijing would be incomplete without a visit to the Great Wall, just as it would be incomplete without enjoying Beijing Roast Duck, also known as Peking Duck. Often honoured as “the first dish to try in China”, this famous dish, with its long history and former status as a royal fine food, promises foreign tourists a romantic taste and a memorable dining experience. The Beijing Qianmen branch of Quanjude, one of China’s best-known roast duck chain restaurants, could be a preferred choice for enjoying the roast duck. Located at Qianmen, it has been a rich commercial district since the Qing Dynasty (1644 — 1911). After dining at Quanjude, visitors can continue to explore the Qianmen commercial district. Local fine food, particularly at a restaurant called Donglaishun, known for its specialty—instant-boiled mutton (羊肉),a traditional hot pot dish — should not be missed. B Jennifer Hill, a 39-year-old mother of three, was at home preparing dinner for 6-year-old Quinn and her younger brother when she suddenly became out of control. Remembering what happened, Jennifer told GMA, “Quinn told me that I actually sat down in the chair that I’m sitting in right now and I looked up at the ceiling and started breathing strangely. She said that I then fell out of the chair onto my left side and my fists were grasped, and my body was convulsing (抽搐). My eyes were open, and she kept saying, ‘Mommy, Mommy,’ but I would not respond.” Realizing the enormity of the situation, Quinn sprang into action. She made a natural decision to take her 3-year-old brother and seek help from neighbours. “This is the first time that they’ve ever left our home without us,” Jennifer explained. “She even told us that she looked both ways before crossing the street. But they went to one neighbour’s home and they were not home, and after that, they went to the next home that they knew. And that neighbour was in and responded to the children.” The neighbour quickly called 911, and Jennifer was rushed to Catawba Valley Medical Centre in Hickory, North Carolina. Doctors determined that she had experienced a grand mal seizure (癫痫大发作), her first seizure ever. Mayor (市长) Kyle J. Hayman of Conover, North Carolina, recognized Quinn’s bravery and declared February 5 as “Quinn Hill Day”. The mayor presented the first grader with a certificate of recognition during a city council (议会) ceremony last Monday. “This young lady had the ability to recognize the emergency (紧急情况), take her younger brother by the hand, leave her home, and seek help from neighbours she knew and trusted,” Mayor Hayman praised Quinn for her quick response. Jennifer Hill expressed great pride in her daughter’s actions. “Proud is an understatement, honestly. She’s my angel. She’s my hero for what she did,” she said. 4. What is GMA probably? A. A news media. B. A medical centre. C. A 911 department. D. A community board. 5. What does the underlined word “enormity” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Benefit. B. Process. C. Power. D. Seriousness. 6. What can best describe Quinn? A. Brave and smart. B. Positive and proud. C. Shy and dependent. D. Humorous and outgoing. 7. Which is a suitable title for the text? A. A Sudden Disease Changes a Woman B. An Unexpected Hero Moves People to Tears C. A Girl Was Praised by the Mayor D. A 6-year-old Saves Mother’s Life C A few years ago, I did research on moss (苔藓) to make a living. Once I accidentally mentioned my job to my barber, he laughed at me. Then every time I got my hair cut, he couldn’t get past it. My example certainly isn’t a one-off situation. Researchers across all fields of science have had similar experiences. But I feel plant scientists are forced to go through such situations especially regularly. Many people ask me why I am not doing more “useful” studies — on things like cancer (癌症) or dementia (痴呆). My answer to their questions is simple. Plant science can help feed the world. Millions of people worldwide die of hunger every year. It’s not that we aren’t producing enough food; it’s just that we are wasting a lot of it. Plant science can help to reduce this waste. One example is apples that brown slower. They are less likely to be thrown away. Plants can also help us protect our environment. They are important in our fight against climate change. Moreover, discoveries in plant science have also paved (铺平) the way for studies in many other areas of science. In short, plant science isn’t useless at all. At an event at a local secondary school, I was surprised to learn that none of the teenagers aged from 14 to 15 could recognize the rice plant. This perhaps shows the level of interest in plants among today’s young people. It’s very worrying. If students aren’t interested in plants, they are unlikely to study them in the future. They will never know how important plant science is. Schools could and should do more to change their ideas. The Rocket Science campaign (活动) was a great example. It saw six hundred thousand children become space biologists. The pupils planted and grew seeds that later spent six months on the International Space Station.Such events are able to drum up students’ interest in plant science. Unfortunately, there are too few of them. Plant science is much more useful than many people think. I hope that more people, especially young students, will take a second look at it. 8. Why does the author choose to study plant science? A. He is better at this field. B. He thinks it is easier than other areas. C. He hopes to get more students interested in it. D. He wants to help solve the global food problem. 9. Why is plant science useful? A. It stops climate change. B. It helps cut down food waste. C. It provides more kinds of food. D. It cures diseases such as cancer. 10. How can we raise students’ interest in plant science according to Paragraph 4? A. By holding more scientific activities. B. By helping them growing more trees. C. By teaching them from a young age. D. By showing them great examples. 11. Which of the following does the writer probably agree? A. Scientists should get more honour through hard work. B. Scientists are expected to do more research on medicine. C. Teenagers should pay more attention to plant science. D. Plant science should be more useful than other fields of science. D Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers were able to successfully create a machine learning model, which was capable of learning words using footage (镜头) gotten by a young child wearing a head-cam. The findings could throw new light on the ways children learn language and potentially inform researchers’ efforts to build future machine learning models that learn more like humans. Previous research guessed children tend to begin acquiring their first words around 6 to 9 months of age. By their second birthday, the average kid masters around 300 words in their vocabulary toolkit (工具包). But the actual mechanism of exactly how children come to connect meaning with words remains unclear and a point of scientific debate. Researchers from New York University’s Centre for Data Science tried to explore this gray area further by creating an AI model that tried to learn the same way a child does. To train the model, the researchers relied on over 60 hours of video and audio recordings pulled from a light head camera tied to a child named Sam. The kid wore the camera on and off starting when he was six months old and ending after his second birthday. Over those 19 months, the camera collected over 600,000 video frames (帧) connected to more than 37,500 recorded speeches from nearby people. The background chatter and video frames pulled from the head-cam provides a glimpse (一瞥) into the experience of a developing child as it eats, plays, and generally experiences the world around them. Armed with Sam’s eyes and ears, the researchers then created a neural (神经) network model to try and make sense of what Sam was seeing and hearing. The model, which had one module (模块) analyzing single frames taken from the camera and another focused on recorded speech direct towards Sam. Like a child, the model learned by linking words with particular objects and visuals when they happened to co-occur at the same time. “I was surprised how much today’s AI systems are able to learn when exposed to quite a minimal amount of data of the sort a child actually receives when they are learning a language,” Professor Lake said. 12. What is the author’s purpose to write Paragraph 1? A. To show evidence. B. To lead in the main topic. C. To raise a question. D. To offer some examples. 13. Why did scientists create an AI model? A. To understand the causes of children ’ s brain development. B. To analyze the social factors affecting children’s language acquisition. C. To explore the effectiveness of different ways of language learning. D. To examine the unclear area of how children link meaning to words. 14. How does the author support the theme of the text? A. By stating opinions. B. By making a guess. C. By describing processes. D. By making comparisons. 15. What is Professor Lake’s attitude to the research? A. Doubtful. B. Favourable. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned. You need to use the DRY principle (原则) to be more productive. This isn’t to say your work is too hard; instead, it’s too repetitive. ____16____ And it’s actually one of the better time management and productivity techniques. DRY was first popularized in a book that states each task should have a single, clear, authoritative representation within a system. Think of it like this: You’re busy every day, but are you productive every day? ____17____ How can you DRY your work and stop repeating yourself? First, you’ll spend a few days doing your normal tasks — but write down everything you do. Be specific. ____18____ Write down how many emails you answered and take notes. Write down phone calls, meetings, and tasks you perform to complete a project, whether it’s one for work or cleaning your house. ____19____ They are unavoidable tasks you have to do, tasks that use up lots of your time and work that repeats itself. Everything in that third kind should then be automated (自动化) or streamlined (使效率更高) before looking into the time-using ones, which may also qualify for some automation. What that streamlining is going to look like depends on what you are wasting your time on. ____20____ If you have one-on-one meetings with workmates that make you repeat yourself, suggest combining them into one meeting. If you’re always cleaning the same part of your home, look into specific cleaning methods that might help you get the whole job done more efficiently. A. DRY stands for “don’t repeat yourself”. B Everyone would ask: Does DRY productivity work? C. Then you can sort everything into three types. D. If you’re always typing the same message into emails, try using models. E. For example, don’t write down that you “answered emails from 10 to 10:30”. F. Once you work through the DRY for a while, you should start working on another. G. If the answer is no, it might be because you’re being too repetitive with your work. A few years ago, Brian Perkins started using a cane (拐杖) to walk. From the moment she could tap her tiny fingers on the piano keys, melodies (旋律) seemed to pour from her soul. Her parents were often amazed at her natural talent, and her music teacher, Mrs. Carlson, claimed she was a talent. Encouraged by their praise, Sophia decided to enter the Harmony Youth Music Competition. Months of preparation followed. Every day after school, Sophia practised tirelessly, her fingers dancing across the keys of the family’s old piano. Her chosen piece was a challenging one — Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Though it tested her skills, she poured her heart into every note, determined to make it perfect. As the competition day neared, an unexpected guest began to shadow Sophia — anxiety. No matter how hard she practised, a small, continuing voice whispered doubts in her ear. What if you forget the notes? What if you make a mistake in front of everyone? On the day of the competition, her hands shook as she waited backstage. When her name was called, she walked to the grand piano under the spotlight, her heart pounding louder than the applause. She sat down, placed her fingers on the keys, and began to play. But halfway through, her mind went empty. Her fingers hesitated, hitting a sour note that echoed (回荡) through the silent hall. The whispers in her mind turned into a loud sound of self-doubt. Tears blurred (使视线模糊) her eyes as she performed the rest of the piece. When the performance ended, the polite applause felt like knives to her heart. She left the stage defeated. “I can’t do it,” she told Mrs. Carlson later that evening, crying into her hands. “I’m just not good enough.” Mrs. Carlson gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “Sophia, failure is not the end. It’s a stepping stone. Do you want to try again?” Sophia hesitated but then nodded. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the local competition, Sophia felt nervous but ready. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2024~2025学年度高一第二学期期末考试 英语 全卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟。 How much is the shirt? Videos of them experiencing Hanfu, learning Chinese kung fu and tasting Chinese cuisine have attracted a lot of attention from overseas. Chinese culture is becoming increasingly popular abroad. In my opinion, this trend is unstoppable. It shows the global appeal and influence of Chinese culture. Reasons for its popularity abroad are as follows. Firstly, globalization and the Internet have made it easier for people from different countries to explore and appreciate diverse cultures. Secondly, Chinese culture has a rich history and unique charm, which can be quite attractive to foreigners. Lastly, the rise of social media platforms enables individuals to share their experiences with a wider audience, further arousing the interest in Chinese cultural practices. Sophia hesitated but then nodded. She knew deep down she couldn’t let one bad experience define her. With Mrs. Carlson’s encouragement, Sophia signed up for a smaller, local competition. This time, they focused not just on her technique but on building her confidence. Mrs. Carlson introduced Sophia to breathing exercises and visualization techniques to calm her nerves. Slowly but surely, Sophia began to feel a change within herself. On the day of the local competition, Sophia felt nervous but ready. As she stepped onto the stage, she took a deep breath, visualized the notes, and let her fingers glide over the keys. The anxiety was there, but she didn’t let it control her. The music flowed from her heart, and when she played the final note, the audience erupted into applause. Sophia won first place. More than the trophy, the experience taught her a lesson she would carry forever: failure is just a pause, not an ending. With perseverance and belief in oneself, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
