三、 阅读理解
You've heard of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Giving Tuesday—some important shopping days. But now there's another holiday, Second-hand Sunday, which you can add to the list. It is the idea of Poshmark, a social marketplace that lets users buy and sell second-hand clothing online.
Second-hand Sunday, which took place on November 27th, 2022, came at an especially good time: first, an increase in the prices of things is forcing many people to look for ways to save money; second, people are disposed to receive second-hand gifts. Over 90% of American adults say they would like to get a second-hand gift but only 34% are likely to buy second-hand gifts for others.
Amber McCasland said, “Our team saw a chance to change traditional holiday shopping patterns(模式). Second-hand Sunday is our first try to change the cultural conversation about how people shop and send gifts during the holidays. The hope is that, instead of running out to buy new things as gifts, people will realise that it's okay to buy used things instead.”
Poshmark is a platform(平台) on which individual(个人的) sellers run their own shops. Many sellers are driven by the idea that buying second-hand things is important for the environment. One such seller is Ashley Wheeler. She said, “For my husband and me, Poshmark is a wake-up call. We realise it isn't just about bringing our old clothing back into the market but about finding others' used clothes and helping protect the environment.”
For many people, second-hand shopping is already out of habit. “We are especially happy about how our actions can make a difference to the environment and society,” said Michelle Childs, a teacher at the University of Tennessee.
