(2025·郑州模拟)Sicco Rood didn't know what to expect when he set out, in the last days of December, to explore the Salton Sea, which is California's largest and most treacherous inland water body.Temperatures around the lake can approach freezing in the winter and rise well above 38℃ in the summer.Much of the lake is bordered by wetland and quicksands. While preparing for the trip, he wondered, “Am I going to be blown into the middle of the lake by the unpredictable storm or get stuck in the quicksands?”
Fortunately, none of those things happened, although conditions weren't perfect enough for Rood to make it all the way around the lake.A storm sent him home after six days of exploring.
The modern version of the Salton Sea was accidentally created in 1905 when the Colorado River broke its banks and began flowing into the dry bed of historic Lake Cahuilla. Before that, the lake bed naturally filled up and dried out periodically.
It had attracted Rood since he travelled to the Santa Rosa Mountains several years ago to watch the sunrise and set over the lake.Since then he has made up his mind to experience it close up.
“I wanted to be on the lake,” he said. “I think there's no better way to experience a lake or a sea than by way of boating.”
Rood spent months planning for this trip.He listed everything he'd need.He even bought snowshoes, which he hoped would help him safely walk across wetland to find dry spots for camping. He found a good weather window at the end of December and he set off on December 29.
The Salton Sea once supported a wide variety of fish. But as the water has been drying up and gotten steadily saltier, the lake has gotten an increasingly bad reputation.
“People have been saying the place is dead. But that's not what I saw,” he said.“During my six days on the lake, I saw thousands of birds every day. It's a beautiful place. It just needs protection.”

(2025·枣庄模拟)On August 15,a team of researchers and conservationists set off on a two-year voyage from Plymouth, England, on board the Dutch tall ship Oosterschelde. They will sail more than 46,000 miles and drop anchor in 32 different ports across four continents, before ending their journey in Falmouth, UK.
The expedition, named Darwin200, comes more than 190 years after Charles Darwin sailed the globe collecting specimens and shaping ideas of his theory of evolution. The team will closely follow Darwin's original voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, which set off on Dec.27, 1831, and returned to England on Oct.2, 1836.
Darwin was 22 years old when he joined the expedition with the intention of seeing the world before joining the church. But during the trip, Darwin became fascinated by the wide range of different species he encountered, which eventually led to him creating his theory of evolution by natural selection.Darwin's account of the journey, published after his return, also helped him establish his reputation as one of Victorian Britain's academic elite.
The main aim of the new expedition is to train and inspire 200 young environmentalists, between 18 and 25 years old, who will each spend a week on board the Oosterschelde studying threatened species that Darwin encountered on his voyage.
“We wanted to create a similarly transformative experience(for the young naturalists),” Stewart McPherson, mission director of Darwin200, said in a statement.“They have the potential to be the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and conservation leaders of tomorrow,” he added.

Camping Tips &Tricks for a Fun Trip
Many people idealize camping trips as being this easy, effortless encounter with destinations rich with natural landscapes and nights under the stars twinkling in the sky above.__8__ That's why we've prepared the best camping tips for you!
Plan accordingly, and then plan again. When you're out in the middle of nowhere, you have to be equipped to nature's challenges. __9__ Therefore, a plan for unexpected weather changes is essential to a successful camping trip. For example, consider packing extra supplies like blankets. While that might seem like a huge inconvenience, the biggest and real issue occurs when you need something you don't have.
Know what you need. __10__ Not all beginner campers will need the top-of-the-line, latest supplies. But you should have at least the basics! That includes a decent tent with enough room for people camping with you, a good sleeping bag appropriate for the season, and other supplies like food and water. You'd better create a convenient checklist that lays out everything that you should consider.
__11__ When you're far away from the major conveniences we rely upon like an urgent care center, police stations, and emergency rooms, you should always remember that safety is your first priority! __12__ A first aid kit is a great starting point, but it's certainly not the end of maximizing your safety efforts.Depending on where you plan to camp, you'll want to grab these items that cover you in most emergency situations: a pocket knife, a fire starter, and a safety whistle.
Ready to go camping? Now you know what to expect and how to prepare for your next camping trip, so you actually have fun — rain or shine!
A.Always choose a safe campsite.
B.Never leave home without safety in mind.

参考范文:
Dear editor,
I am Li Hua, a high school student. Here I am writing to respond to your article about establishing a nature reserve by the river.
I don't think it will be welcomed by young people.Although a nature reserve can be beneficial in providing habitats for wild animals and plants and protecting our environment, it should be acknowledged that a city with such a large population cannot afford to spare a vast space to function simply as a nature reserve.
A recreational wetland park, I believe, is an alternative. In this park, for one thing, the wildlife, especially those birds, can seek shelters and the water quality can be improved. For another, the citizens, especially the teenagers, not only can appreciate the natural ecology but also enjoy various activities such as biking, hiking and camping.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua

(2025·蚌埠模拟)Though traveling is not a big deal for me today, before my trip to the mountains, I used to be a homebody.I had friends to hang out with, several hobbies, and I felt completely comfortable spending weeks or even months in my hometown — or sometimes even on my block — without going anywhere. All my demands of novelty were satisfied by the Discovery and National Geographic channels, and I seriously thought there was no difference between seeing something on the TV and with one's own eyes.
The situation changed when one day David, my best friend who always has a couple of colorful bugs in his head (or, in other words, was always carrying out several crazy plans at once), walked into my room and declared his disgust (厌恶) for civilization.I will not describe how he managed to persuade me to join him on his journey to the Rocky Mountains; all I will say is that we departed in five days. This was my first time in the mountains, so I was turning my head in all directions.Unfortunately, the weather was foggy most of the time, and the higher we got into the mountains, the worse the visibility was.
Even despite this fact, I still enjoyed the hike — I felt like I was Bear Grylls, whose show I used to watch with excitement: in the wild, with food and water in my backpack, carrying a flashlight and a knife. On the first day, we were making our way along the foothills; but the next day, we started to climb on one of the peaks.Though it was not that steep and high, I was still excited.I regularly hastened, and because of that, I ran out of energy long before we got to the top; David, on the other hand, was more well-paced.
When we finally got to the top, nothing had changed. The same fog was covering the surroundings, and even though I was filled with positive emotions, I felt disappointed, because I counted on seeing the view from above and perhaps being able to take some photos.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back.
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
Seeing all this scenery with my own eyes was truly an eye-opening experience for me.

____________________________________________________________________________
参考范文:
We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back.As the fog began to lift slightly, we caught glimpses of the breathtaking landscape that had been hidden from us.The sight of the rugged terrain and the distant peaks, even partially obscured, was more than I could have imagined. The reality of the mountains was far more profound and awe-inspiring than any TV show could convey. It was a moment of realization that the world was much bigger and more magnificent than the confines of my hometown.
Seeing all this scenery with my own eyes was truly an eye-opening experience for me.It was a stark contrast to the comfort of my home and the familiarity of my daily routine. The fresh air, the sounds of nature, and the challenge of the climb all contributed to a sense of adventure and discovery that I had never felt before. It was then that I understood the difference between experiencing something through a screen and immersing oneself in it.The disappointment of the foggy view was replaced by the satisfaction of having stepped out of my comfort zone and into the unknown. This trip was not just a physical journey; it was a personal one that changed my perspective on life and the world around me.
