A Walk In The Woods is one of the most unique and funny comedy books. The book follows the story of the author, Bill Bryson, recollecting his time spent on the Appalachian Trail with his old friend, Stephen Katz, going through all the struggles hiking a twothousand mile long trail.
The book starts off with Bill Bryson randomly (随意地) deciding to go on the Appalachian Trail. He had decided that he wanted to hike the trail so that he would have an experience to write a book about. He invites his old friend Stephen Katz and this is where the story begins.
I think that the way that he writes about the problems in a comedic (喜剧的) way makes me somehow care more about the problems. Whether he was talking about acid rain, invasive plants or the hunting of songbirds, he writes about the situations in a way that actually makes you care about them. In this book, he writes about the problem, gives all the reasons why it's a problem and everything that the problem affects, then only sometimes gives you a solution to the problem, which makes you actually think about the situations in the book. It is all a mix of humour and seriousness and it is a very unique way of getting the reader to actually care about problems.
The two friends grow a lot throughout the course of the book. They learn that they are not necessarily as weak as they think they are, when they come out of the woods into the tourist trap of a town called Gatlinburg after spending hours hiking in the Smoky Mountains and they see all the tourists who are eating icecream and thinking that a halfmile walk through the center of town is the hardest thing they've ever done. They also learn that they are kind of okay at hiking because people are dropping out of the trail all the time around them, while Bryson and Katz just keep on powering through.
In the end, this book completely exceeded (超越) my expectations when I read it. I had heard people say it was a good book, but I had never expected how good of a book it would be. The book is much better than the movie, so if you didn't like the movie, you will probably still like this book. If you liked the movie, you will love this book. Bill Bryson's humour mixed with the fact that this is a true story makes this book one of the best comedy books ever written.

Ⅱ 七选五
Is it true that British people have a different sense of humor than people in other countries? Let's have a look at what we laugh at in Britain.
__1__ It's not just politicians who make us laugh, but anyone whose job is to tell other people what to do and who takes themselves too seriously.
We laugh at authority, but also sympathetically laugh with anyone who we think is treated badly. __2__ Our clowns are often silly people doing silly things—Mr Bean, for example—while in America, they are often clever people doing clever things and winning.
The fact that we laugh when other people might feel hopeless is one of the oddest things to appreciate about British humor. We do have a strong sense of irony (反讽). “Not very pleasant,” we might say after some terrible experience. __3__ “It's a bit windy today,” we might say in the middle of a typhoon, or “There's a slight problem,” when something has gone very seriously wrong. __4__
Another thing that can make it difficult to understand British humor is that we don't always laugh or even smile when we say something funny. __5__
Do you think the British sense of humor is unique?
A.In addition, we tend to play things down.
B.We often keep a straight face even when we're making a joke.
C.Culture plays a big part in how funny you may find something.
D.We know they can't win, but if they do so sometimes, it's even funnier.
E.Brits don't express extreme feelings; we just “keep calm and carry on”.
F.Brits turn to laughter as a form of medicine when life knocks them down.
G.To the British, powerful and important people are often sources of laughter.

Ⅱ 阅读
Gallows humor (黑色幽默) seem like a mistake, or at least in poor taste. But psychologists say that gallows humor can be an important way to relieve stress. “Humor makes you feel in control and it can give you that feeling that everything is okay even when it's not,” says James M. Jones, a psychology professor at the University of Delaware.
Psychologists say that just because you're laughing doesn't mean you're wasting time. Occasional teasing among colleagues, particularly if it revolves around things associated with the job, can boost creativity, departmental cohesiveness (凝聚力) and performance.
“There are a lot of stressors out there,” says Ed Dunkelblau, a psychologist with the Institute for Emotionally Intelligent Learning in Chicago. “But gallows humor is a way of making difficult things a little less difficult.”
This is true as long as the humor is used for the right purpose. The main point of it should be inspiring people—not laughing at them. “Anything that would lift morale (士气) in terms of the company would be good humor,” says Thierry Guedj, a professor of business and psychology at Boston University. “Before you say or do anything, think about, ‘How is this helping my employees' morale?’”
You want to give your employees and coworkers a sense of belonging, so don't make observations that are aggressive. Most obviously, Dr Guedj says, don't make comments about people's physical appearance, or faith. If you have any doubt, it's appropriate, don't go through with it.
Or you can take aim at the one person you know won't be offended (冒犯): Yourself. “If there's going to be a joke or story, it should be you,” Mr Dunkelblau says. For example, if you're a marketing manager reviewing a failed campaign that you led, begin with a line like, “The guy who gave permission to this deal might just be looking for work next week.”
“People with the ability to laugh at themselves can give other people permission to laugh at themselves too,” Mr Jones says. “And if you can laugh at yourself, you feel better about yourself.”

Robert and Henry were good friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school when Robert shouted at Henry and said, “You are a coward (胆小鬼), and I won't play with you.” Without any words, Henry was a little angry and went home alone.
The next day Henry went to school as usual, but Robert told all the boys that Henry was a coward and all of them laughed at Henry a great deal. Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he played with some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play.
A few days later, Robert was swimming with his new friends in a river, and he struggled in the water and suddenly cried “Help, help”. His new friends didn't help him and ran away as fast as they could.

[精彩范文]
Robert was still struggling in the river. It was clear that he was in danger. He thought that he would die soon if nobody came to help him. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the cry, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water quickly. He swam to Robert as fast as possible and helped Robert out just as he couldn't swim any longer. By his great effort, he saved Robert at last.
Robert's life was saved. Robert was deeply moved by Henry's heroic deed and burst into tears. He and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage and he was a real hero, not a coward. When Robert shook Henry's hands and said sorry to Henry, Henry forgave him with a smile. Robert and Henry were friends again and after school they went home together happily as usual.
