Joss Naylor is a sheep farmer from the Lake District. Among most people, his name means little, but in certain circles, he is known as one of the finest mountain runners to have ever lived.
Joss lives and breathes mountains. He has lived and farmed all his life in an area of the Lake District which has many mountains, including the tallest mountain in England. Joss has an almost superhuman ability to run at speed over mountains. However, he wasn’t always a mountain runner. As a young man, he was advised to give up farming because of serious back problems. But, when he was 24, he was tired of being told to take it easy.
Nothing can stop a good man from being better! He continued working and took up running. When he ran his first mountain race, he discovered that he fell in love with it. All his time spent herding (放牧) sheep on the mountains had prepared him for this.
His achievements are nothing short of famous. For example, he smashed his own record and set a new one. At the age of 49, he ran up 214 mountains. “It is a wonderful experience though the practice is very hard,” he said. Many of his runs have raised money for charity, and he is popular in the community.
He keeps writing and sharing his experiences about his climb. “I want people back home—especially family and friends who support me—to get a real feel for what it’s like,” he said.

(Mr. Wormwood sells stolen cars and tries to get more money by cheating others. Matilda, a book lover, hates that.)
Scene One
One morning, just when Mr. Wormwood was setting off to cheat others again, Matilda walked into his room quietly to get the hat he wore each day to work. She was too short and had to get it with a walking-stick.
Holding the hat in one hand and a bottle of superglue in the other, Matilda put some glue very carefully all round the inside rim (边) of the hat. Then she carefully put the hat back.
Scene Two
That evening, when Mr. Wormwood got home, he cried, “I can’t take my hat off and I have to keep it all day!”
“Don’t be silly,” his wife said. “Come here. I’ll take it off for you.”
“Ow-w-w! Don’t do that! Let go! You’ve nearly killed me!” he shouted.
“What’s the matter?” Matilda was standing at the door with a book in her hand.
Mr. Wormwood looked at her doubtfully, but said nothing.
“It must be superglue. Haven’t I told you not to touch the dirty thing?” Mrs. Wormwood said.
“I haven’t touched it!” Mr. Wormwood shouted. He turned and looked again at Matilda, who looked back at him with large innocent (无辜的) brown eyes.
Scene Three
Mr. Wormwood had to keep his hat on all through dinner. Later, he discovered that the worst thing about having the hat was not to take a shower in it, but to sleep in it. “I expect it will be loose (松动) by the morning and then it’ll be taken off easily,” Mrs. Wormwood said.
Scene Four
But the hat wasn’t loose by the morning. So Mrs. Wormwood cut the thing off his head, bit by bit, first the top and then the rim.
At breakfast Matilda said to Mr. Wormwood, “You must try to get those bits off your head. They look like little brown insects. And people will think you’ve got lice (虱子).”
“Be quiet!” Mr. Wormwood shouted. “Just keep your mouth shut!”
All in all, it is a most satisfying exercise. But don’t get your hopes up that it has taught the cheater a good lesson.

During the oyster gardening season, Amy and her mom go to the beach. There Amy has nine cages. “Once a week I go out there,” she says. She pulls the cages from the water to check conditions of the oysters.
This spring, Amy’s oysters will be big enough to be collected. Amy will go with Liz to pick them up. Oysters that are collected will then be “planted” on the reefs (珊瑚礁). So far, Amy has raised more than 1,500 oysters. She’s a great leader of oyster gardening and a great supporter, too.

I used to teach English as a volunteer in Africa. Some of my friends asked me, “Don’t you miss your home, Emily?” I told them I was the only child in my family and I truly had an easy life at home. However, I got bored of having a “good” time at home and needed a change.
The kids from Africa were eager (渴望的) to learn and easy to teach. I was surprised at how smart they were. Talking with them made me think a lot. When you come from a poor area, you must grow up fast and deal with all kinds of difficult situations.
Volunteering has always been easy for me because I don’t like to do the same things every day. My job also gives me the freedom to choose when and where I work. Although I don’t get paid for volunteering, I’m old enough to know that money is not the only way to get rewarded (回报). The experience itself is priceless. I make lots of connections with good people. Also, when I volunteer, I often work with people who are worse off than I am. That has taught me to practice thankfulness for what I have. Believe me, this life lesson is worth a million dollars.
I am not a perfect person. In a sense, I think I’m selfish (自私的). But you don’t have to be a perfect, selfless person to volunteer. In fact, I have benefited (受益) a lot from volunteering. Volunteering helps others, and it can also help yourself, too. The biggest benefit of volunteering is that it helps you develop your character (品质), and that’s the passport to a rich and meaningful life.
28.Why did Emily volunteer in Africa?
A.She lived a really difficult life at home.
B.She hoped to learn a new language there.
C.She wanted to experience something new.
29.How were the African kids in Emily’s eyes in Paragraph 2?
A.Quite teachable. B.Hard to deal with. C.Bored of learning.
30.What does Emily get from her volunteering experience?
A.The freedom to choose a well-paid job.
B.The chance to connect with good people a lot.
C.The ability to express thanks for what she has lost.
31.Which of the following would Emily most probably agree with?
A.Use it or lose it. B.Old habits die hard. C.Giving is receiving.

Greening the Desert
Minqin County, located in the city of Wuwei in Gansu Province, is between China’s third and fourth largest deserts—the Badain Jaran and the Tengger. Local people plant suosuo trees, a plant that can survive in the desert, to prevent further desertification (沙漠化).
A number of local people have worked hard to turn the place into an oasis (绿洲). 27-year-old Zhong Lin is one of them. Growing up in Minqin, Zhong experienced sandstorms throughout his childhood. He once wanted to run away from his hometown and build his future in southern China.
However, he changed his mind when he saw the villagers’ hard life and the terrible environment there. He said, “Suddenly I understood—running away isn’t the solution. Making a difference is the key.” After graduating from university in 2020, Zhong returned to his hometown. “If suosuo trees can take root in sandstorms, why can’t young people?” he wrote in his diary.
Since then, Zhong has tried planting suosuo trees in the desert. He planted 500 trees in 2021, but most of them died. So he studied, learned from experienced villagers, and then planted more. After three years’ efforts, the trees he planted are now growing well in the desert, turning the land green and lively.
To draw attention to his hometown’s environment, Zhong shared videos about tree planting online and started a “Please Plant a Tree in Minqin” activity. Last weekend, I went camping after a long time of tiring work. The trip let me enjoy the clear lake and beautiful views in the woods. I felt the difference at once. I relaxed. I came home feeling rested and a little more cheerful. Going camping became a way to reduce the worry in my life.
I not only got a nice weekend, but I was also experiencing the benefits (益处) of nature to my mental health (心理健康)—something that researchers and healthcare providers have long noticed. Research has found that as little as five minutes in nature can be helpful for people to reduce worry and feel happier. This means that we can get relaxed and feel better from stepping outside right away.
If we are unable to put our whole body and mind into nature — for example, by taking a weekend camping trip — we can still find chances in our area. We can take a five-minute break in a small park near our house or take a moment to sit under a large tree. We’ll find them useful to refresh our mind. Our better feelings in later life can demonstrate the active influence of nature.
Besides simply spending more time outdoors, consider how we can enjoy nature even if we have no time to get close to nature. Listen to recorded bird songs or rainstorms instead of music, bring green plants or put pictures of natural beauty into our home. Although bringing nature indoors is quite different from a real outdoor experience, we can still feel nature and experience improved feelings.
Being in nature doesn’t ask anything of us. Slow down, go outside, and notice what’s around us. Listen, touch and smell, and we will really notice a benefit in our mental health.

The sun hung low, brushing gold over the empty area. The air buzzed (喧闹)—not with insects, but with voices, cameras, and the weight of something about to begin.
Roy’s heart beat like a drum. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony (仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows (洞穴) of the owls.
No sign marked them. No fence protected them. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy (破坏) their living area.
He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to stay out of trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn’t feel right.
He stepped up to the microphone (话筒).
“Excuse me,” he said, voice shaking. “Before you dig…you should know the truth.”

“There are owls living here,” Roy said. “They’re small. They’re scared. And if you build here, you’ll destroy their homes.”
Someone in the crowd laughed. A reporter asked, “How do you know that?”

The manager stepped forward, “This is not your business, kid.”
Roy turned to face him. His fear turned into something else—strength.
“It’s my business. It’s everyone’s business. We can’t just destroy what we don’t see. Progress should not come at the cost of wonder,” he said.

Inside the hall, the door was shut, and the key lay on the glass stand. Poor Alice, who was about one foot high after taking some drink, found a cake on the floor. She went up and soon ate all the cake.
“How strange! How tall I am!” said Alice. She looked down at her feet—they seemed so far off. In fact, she was now over nine feet high, which meant she still couldn’t get through the door. She sat down, and had a good cry till there was a large pool all round her.

Alice picked up the fan and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. “Dear, dear! How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall! ” she said.
Then she noticed herself in the glass—she was now not more than two feet high, and still shrinking quite fast. That was the fan! She realized this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.
Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. “Things are worse,” said the poor girl, “I was never so small as this. How can I get out?” As she said these words, she lost her footsteps and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water—her own tears.
Just then Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her.

After the lunchtime rush, it’s time for the food delivery (递送) drivers to eat.
Liu Lijie, halfway through a 13-hour workday, usually rides to a restaurant in Beijing for his favorite choice—mutton noodle soup, for 12 yuan, 6 yuan cheaper than the regular price.
The reduced-price meals, known as aixincan or loving meals, are available at some restaurants in large cities, home to large populations of migrant workers (农民工) who come looking for jobs.
“There is a lot of pressure in life since I came to Beijing to work, so eating aixincan is both cheap and convenient,” says 40-year-old Liu, who arrived in Beijing two years ago from Shanxi province. Jackie Robinson (1919—1972), was the first black baseball player to play in the American major leagues (大联盟) during the 20th century.
Robinson was an outstanding all-around athlete at the University of California. Yet in 1941 he had to drop out of the university to help his mother support the family. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and became a second lieutenant (少尉) in 1943. However, he had to leave the army because he refused to follow an order that a black person like him should sit at the back of the army bus. This might be one of the reasons for his future fight for human rights.
Upon leaving the army, Robinson played baseball in a black league team, where he drew the attention of the general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey. Robinson’s talents on the field, his honesty, and his caring for family all satisfied Rickey. In 1947, Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first black player in the major leagues and breaking the 63-year-old “color line”. He achieved quick success on the field and became the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1949. From 1947 through 1956, he led the Dodgers to six league championships and one World Series victory.
The road to success is never smooth. At first, because of his color, Robinson was treated unfairly by baseball fans, players on opposite teams, and even his teammates. He wrote in his book, “Plenty of times I wanted to leave, but I had to hold to myself. I know that I am a black man in a white world. The whole thing is bigger than myself.”
After retiring (退役) from baseball in 1957, Robinson went on working for human rights. He was a spokesman for the NAACP and made appearances with Martin Luther King. In 1962, Robinson became the first black person to be introduced into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1984, Robinson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for an American.
139.Why did Robinson stop his army life?

Hello from nature’s foodies
As a proud grizzly bear, I say hello from Alaska. We eat anything we can get our paws on. One of my favourite meals is catching fresh salmon. There’s nothing quite like the pleasure of a stomach full of fresh fish!
I’m a blue whale. I may eat up to 3.6 million krill (磷虾) per day! You may wonder why such huge animals live on such tiny food? It’s because our mouths only have rows of baleen (鲸须). It lets water flow out while holding in tiny things.
I’m a hummingbird. We eat flower nectar (蜜). We fly around a few thousand flowers each day to get as much food as possible. As we move our wings really fast, we burn through energy fast. So we need to keep feeding.
Hello~from~a~sloth~in~the~South~America! Our favorite food? Low-energy leaves! Do we eat a lot? No. We slow-movers don’t need a lot of energy. Even our stomachs work so slowly that after a meal, we’re too tired to do anything but... sleep!
143.Why does a blue whale live on tiny living things?
A.It is the largest sea animal. B.It is too slow to catch large fish.
C.It only has baleen instead of teeth. D.It likes a stomach full of tiny food.

An hour before the show, the backstage (后台) was busy and noisy. Young male Peking Opera artists in their 20s were applying makeup, adjusting costumes, stretching, and clearing their throats. The air was filled with the sounds of traditional Chinese instruments.
“These young people started learning with me when they were just kids—now they’re adults, leading the shows themselves,” says Yang Shaochun, an 85-year-old Peking Opera master.
This weekend, four shows will be put on at Beijing People’s Theatre. Young wuxi artists will play the lead roles.
Wuxi, or martial (武术的) play, is the base of the fighting and movement part in Peking Opera. Wei Pengyu, a 29-year-old actor, was attracted to Peking Opera as a child—not by the music or stories at first, but by the colorful, amazing facial masks that brought the characters to life. At 14, he began training in Peking Opera, especially in wusheng—a male role type. “For me, stepping into the role of a hero is a dream come true,” he says.
“Playing wuxi isn’t just about action—it’s about expressing the character’s courage, justice (正义), loyalty and strength through movements,” says Xu Zhouyi, 25, another male actor.
Later that evening, a classic piece San Cha Kou was played by two young actors, Wu Zeyu and Shu Jiaxing. The viewers were attracted to the great scene and cheered for the actors’ excellent martial art movements.
Wu and Shu practiced together for nearly a year. “San Cha Kou is a test of trust between two actors. We have to read each other’s energy—know when one is speeding up or slowing down. Every movement must be perfectly counted to avoid real crashes while still looking dangerous,” says Wu.

A.Practice makes perfect. B.One is never too old to learn.
C.Great hopes make great man. D.Friends should be few but good.
149.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Wuxi movements impress viewers B.Young actors shine in Peking Opera
C.Wuxi actors celebrate after graduating D.A Peking Opera master opens a school

Linda, 29, nurse: I pay all my bills online. One day, I received an email from my bank. It told me that someone was trying to take out money from my account (账号), so I should email my password (密码) to the “bank manager”. The silence of the pond (池塘) was broken by the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer ducked (扎入) into the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to another, then into the boat.
On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Women Against Underwater Rubbish (OWAUR), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in Scotia.
When the team returned, they joked about the trip. “We didn’t even know what it was,” one swimmer said with a laugh, showing an electronic lighter they had found. “We had to ask a young person.”
Part protection organization, part social club, OWAUR only accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away from them. However, the world of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her anxious. Then she came up with a slogan (标语):
“OVER 65, IF YOU’RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IS THE AGE OF ACTION.”
Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond cleanup moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think.

Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.
But something was different. Something had changed.
Home
“So, do you want to hear about the bad part or the good part first?” I asked Mum.
“Whatever you want to talk about,” she answered.
“Well, except for last night, I had a fantastic time,” I said. “I feel like they ruined (毁坏) the whole trip for me.”
“No, sweetie. Don’t let them do that to you. You were there for more than forty-eight hours, and that awful part lasted one hour. Don’t let them take that away from you, okay?”
“I know.” I nodded. “But do I always have to worry about bad guys like that? Like when I grow up, is it always going to be like this?”
“There are always going to be bad guys in the world, Auggie,” she said, looking at me. “But I really believe there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”
“Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.”
“Sometimes people surprise us,” she said, rubbing the top of my head.

Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom.
“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane? Is that a bad thing?”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane?” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.
“Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.”
“Hurricanes can be good things?” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.

One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare (敢于) not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter?” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
John took me to the stable. Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it, for I was tired.

At the age of 49, he ran up 214 mountains. “It is a wonderful experience though the practice is very hard,” he said.
(Matilda borrows her friend’s parrot (鹦鹉) and…)

D.Mr. Wormwood wouldn’t cheat others any more.
8.
Each picture above matches one scene. Which scene is missing?
A.Scene One. B.Scene Two.
C.Scene Three. D.Scene Four.
【答案】5.B 6.D 7.C 8.C
【导语】本文讲述了Matilda通过巧妙设计用胶水将父亲的帽子粘在头上,以此惩罚他的不诚实行为,并展现了她的创造力和机智。
5.细节理解题。根据Scene One中“Holding the hat in one hand and a bottle of superglue in the other, Matilda put some glue very carefully all round the inside rim (边) of the hat.” 可知,Matilda在Mr. Wormwood的帽子内侧涂上了超强胶水。故选B。
6.推理判断题。根据“One morning, just when Mr. Then she carefully put the hat back.”和“Matilda was standing at the door with a book in her hand. Mr. Wormwood looked at her doubtfully, but said nothing.… Mr. Wormwood shouted. He turned and looked again at Matilda, who looked back at him with large innocent (无辜的) brown eyes.”
根据文章最后一段“All in all, it is a most satisfying exercise. But don’t get your hopes up that it has taught the cheater a good lesson.”

Some people see oysters (牡蛎) as delicious food. But some raise oysters to clean up the polluted seawater. Amy, a 15-year-old girl, is one of them. She has won a master oyster gardener prize this year. She thinks oysters are really helpful. They are environmental stars.
“I knew nothing about oyster gardening when I started in 2022. I learned all of this after I completed a free course about it. The course is about raising oysters in cages (笼子),” Amy says.

(2025·广西·中考真题)

The Civilian Mobile Library offers books for free. Readers are invited to take one book every 15 days. They are encouraged to pass it on to someone else once they’ve finished reading. And they are not expected to return the book.
The library is just seven square meters in size but houses thousands of books on different subjects. “It might be the smallest library in the world,” said Xu Dawei, the owner. “But in another sense, it’s also the biggest because the books keep moving. Once, a reader took a book on Chinese garden history. After finishing it, the reader passed it to a neighbour. The neighbour then took it to Germany!”
“I’ve read thousands of books,” Xu said. “Books have truly changed my life.” The idea of starting a library took shape in 2000, when Xu recommended (推荐) online a list of his favorite books to university students, but many of them said they couldn’t find those books in their school libraries or local bookstores. So he began sending his books to readers for free. “They all wrote me letters expressing their thanks. It inspired me to take it farther, turning my book-gifting into a physical space,” Xu said.

Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet not far off. It was the Rabbit that had come back, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone, that when he came near, she called out, “If you please, sir....” The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.
“Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there’s no harm to try.” So she swam up.

In order to get back earlier to make money, he digs into his meal hurriedly at the Yushiji Restaurant.
Luo Shuai, another delivery driver, learned of Yushiji’s aixincan through his workmates and has since become a daily customer at the restaurant, which serves food from his native (本地的) Henan province.
“It reminds me of my hometown,” says 27-year-old Luo, who moved to Beijing at the end of last year.
Feng Yong, the 43-year-old manager of a meat pie restaurant, spends much of his day making pies. He says the restaurant began serving aixincan to help people in need and inspire others to do the same. As a Shandong province native who moved to Beijing more than 20 years ago, Feng says he has a deep understanding of being an outsider working in a new city.
The key, he says, is to avoid any embarrassment for customers who are in need. The staff do what they can to offer help and don’t ask any private things of the customers.

144.What decide how much hummingbirds and sloths eat?
A.Living places. B.Diet lists. C.Daily activities. D.Body sizes.
145.Which part of a magazine is the text probably from?

144.推理判断题。根据“As we move our wings really fast, we burn through energy fast. So we need to keep feeding.”以及“No. We slow-movers don’t need a lot of energy”可知蜂鸟需要大量进食是因为它们的翅膀快速振动,消耗能量极快,需要不断补充能量,而树懒则因为活动缓慢,能量消耗低,所以不需要大量进食,这都与它们的日常活动密切相关。故选C。
145.推理判断题。本文介绍了不同动物的饮食习性,故文章可能来自杂志的“野生动物”部分。故选A。
