Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) . Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form.
Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions.
The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers—led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind—said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.

The snow was falling. The schools were over earlier than usual, but much to my surprise my appointment wasn’t canceled. And so I went, feeling especially heroic. Snow or no snow, I’d be on time for my scheduled donation at the local blood center.
When I got there I discovered four more “hero-types” were already there, with machines quietly collecting their lifesaving gifts. Seeing them made me believe that while I was proud to be there, I wasn’t a hero. And any silly heroic thoughts quickly disappeared as I lay back in my own donor chair and began my donation. I was ready to make a difference in the life of someone I’ d never meet.
My wife Karen is a donor, too. She’s been on the bone marrow (骨髓) list for fifteen years, ever since she signed up to provide bone marrow to a child. That little girl died before Karen’s bone marrow could help her, but Karen was called again recently as it turned out she might be a match for someone else. The caller asked Karen if she’d still be willing to become a bone marrow donor. “Yes,” she said and then immediately began answering questions in preparation for the pages of paperwork to follow. It was a race against time. I wish I could say this race was won, but again it wasn’t.
Last week Karen gave blood and next week I’ll make my usual donation. I’ll clear an afternoon from my schedule and call for an appointment. Whatever blood product they need whole, I’ll gladly give. I don’t know whose life my donation may affect, but it really doesn’t matter. And sadly, while so few among us actually take the time to donate, Karen and I always will.
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. He is quite fond of taking risks.
B. He is a man who always keeps his word.
C. The snow almost ruined his appointment.
D. He never thinks donating blood is a heroic deed.
5. What influence did other donors have on the author?
A. They changed his attitude to himself.
B. They helped him find joy in donating.
C. They made him feel it a duty to donate.
D. They strengthened his belief not to be a donor.
6. What does the passage say about Karen and her bone marrow donation?
A. She has been found a match to nobody.
B. She decided to join in it over 20 years ago.
C. She fell in trouble when she came to paperwork.
D She has already met with two failures in donation.
7. Which of the following shows the author’s opinion?
A. More people should have become donors.
B. The donation itself should have been made easier.
C. Receivers should have been introduced to donors.
D. More blood products should have been developed.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1, which has emerged as a pioneer especially in educational technology. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. It combines advanced machine learning methods to provide personalized learning solutions for students worldwide.
Unlike traditional AI models that rely on pre-programmed answers, DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. DeepSeek-R1 improves by itself by using reinforcement (强化) learning to simulate (模拟) human reasoning. This allows it to guide students through problem-solving step by step, much like a patient tutor. For example, when a student struggles with a math equation, DeepSeek-R1 doesn’t just give the answer; it breaks down the logic, identifies errors, and encourages critical thinking.
The model’s applications extend beyond academics. In language learning, it analyzes (分析) students’ pronunciation through AI speech recognition and offers real-time feedback. For teachers, DeepSeek-R1 can provide lesson plans that agree with curriculum standards and even predict students’ learning difficulties based on historical data. Its “adaptive testing” feature creates customized quizzes that adjust difficulty according to individual progress.
However, challenges remain. Critics argue that over-reliance on AI might reduce human interaction in education. DeepSeek’s developers address this by emphasizing its role as a “supplement (补充), not a replacement.” As Dr. Li, a DeepSeek researcher, stated, “Our goal is to free teachers from repetitive tasks so they can focus on inspiring creativity.”
Looking ahead, DeepSeek aims to bring virtual reality (VR) into its platform, allowing students to explore historical events or scientific concepts in immersive 3D environments. While ethical debates about AI in education still exist, one thing is clear: tools like DeepSeek are reshaping how we learn, combining technology with human wisdom.
8. What makes DeepSeek-R1 different from traditional AI models?
A. It uses pre-programmed answers.
B. It focuses on memorization techniques.
C. It creates fixed test patterns for all the students.
D. It employs reinforcement learning for reasoning.
9. What does the underlined word “adaptive” in paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. fixed B. adjustable C. complex D. outdated
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the use of DeepSeek-R1?
A. skeptical B. critical C. positive D. indifferent
11. What is the main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To advertise DeepSeek products.
B. To criticize the risks of DeepSeek in schools.
C. To discuss the role of DeepSeek in transforming education.
D. To compare different AI models.

One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might someday get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world. TV and computer games are leading to a serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors.
Each of us has a place in nature where we go sometimes, even if it is torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes. “If the decrease in park use continues across North America, who will defend parks against encroachment (蚕食)?” asks Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods.
Without having a nature experience, kids can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health, to stress levels, creativity and cognitive (认知的) skills. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents — and a lack of outside play is surely part of it; research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature exposure. Even a small outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world.
Kids are not responsible. They are just over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous outdoors from time to time, but when repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite (仪式) during the children’s growth, it can be more dangerous.
We should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring nature and taking friendship in fields and woods that cement love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.
12. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To show the great damage done to nature.
B. To recommend a popular book to the public.
C. To stress the necessity of kid’s going outdoors.
D. To raise the awareness of environmental protection.
13. What may happen to children without a nature experience?
A. They’ll surely become a failure. B. They’ll keep a high sense of wonder.
C. They may suffer physically and mentally. D. They can develop better social skills.
14 What does the author think of children’s breaking an arm?
A. It is not a bad thing in a sense. B. It is caused by the careless parents.
C. It should be taken seriously. D. It could be prevented from happening.
15. What should parents do according to the author?
A. Ensure kids’ freedom and joy. B. Value outdoor activities of kids.
C. Bring kids science about nature. D. Advocate kids making friends.

I was a kindergarten teacher, 40 years old and non-athletic. One day, Ryan, my thirteen-year-old son, approached me and said, “Mom, would you like to join in our bikeathon (自行车马拉松) next month?” As he told me the details of the bikeathon, I laughed out loudly. “What makes you think I could finish a 20-mile bikeathon?” I asked.
Ryan looked straight in my eyes and said, “I know you can do it. You can be my iron (铁) mommy.” I almost laughed again. But my son was serious. So I promised him that I would consider it. When I began to think over his invitation, I surprisingly found that it would need months of training and new equipment, and that my bike needed fixing to work again. At that moment, I lost my interest in doing all of that.
The next day, I went to kindergarten class. I played a familiar counting song and the kids were struggling to keep up with the beat at first. “Let’s do it again, and this time better. I know you can do it!” There it was again and again, and the kids made it to sing to the beat. Realizing my inspiring words “I know you can do it”, I was determined to have a try for the bikeathon.
I told Ryan about it and asked him to give me some tips on how to get ready. I began training hard to get prepared. Then the bikeathon day came on a cool spring morning. Ryan and I set out for the site together. Ryan kept encouraging me on the road. However, as soon as I came to the starting point, which is on a hill overlooking our town and about twenty miles away from the finish line, I became a bit nervous.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Then the bikeathon began.

The snow was falling. The schools were over earlier than usual, but much to my surprise my appointment wasn’t canceled. And so I went, feeling especially heroic. Snow or no snow, I’d be on time for my scheduled donation at the local blood center.
When I got there, I discovered four more “hero-types” were already there, with machines quietly collecting their lifesaving gifts.
D. She has already met with two failures in donation.
7. Which of the following shows the author’s opinion?
A. More people should have become donors.
B. The donation itself should have been made easier.
C. Receivers should have been introduced to donors.
D. More blood products should have been developed.
B 5. A 6. D 7. A

D 9. B 10. C 11. C

13 What may happen to children without a nature experience?
A. They’ll surely become a failure. B. They’ll keep a high sense of wonder.
C. They may suffer physically and mentally. D. They can develop better social skills.
14. What does the author think of children’s breaking an arm?
C 13. C 14. A 15. B

When did you last spend time in nature? Maybe you spent one hour just ___36___ (lie) on the ground to enjoy the peace of the summer evening. If it’s been a while, you might want to try it again—because research shows we get big health benefits from spending time in such ___37___ (nature) spaces.
“___38___ idea,” explains Anne Schutte ___39___ works at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, “is that because we get close to nature, then nature is ___40___ (actual) where our brains work the best.”
Research by Schutte shows that people who spend time in nature are more likely ___41___ (breathe) cleaner air. But there’s more. That outdoor time also can help people once they move indoors again. They are better able to stay ___42___ (focus) and feel calm.
There’s some evidence (证据) that when we’re indoors, in cities or in other built environments, our brains have to work harder to focus. One reason may be that these ___43___ (place) are full of people, cars and other things which are all around us with movement and sound. Those things use up our attention.
“Green spaces—the plants and the trees and so on— ___44___ (think) to be more restful and relaxing to our attention,” Schutte says. So is listening ____45____ birds singing in the trees. We can let our minds relax in this environment.

37. natural

“spend + 时间 + (in)doing sth.”
故填 The。
故填 who/that。
“be likely to do sth.” 故填 to breathe。
故填 are thought。
故填 to。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.
In a word, it was not just an art class; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Then the bikeathon began.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then the bikeathon began. As I pushed off down the hill, the wind rushed past my face, and my heart pounded wildly. The first few miles were thrilling, but soon, my legs began to ache, and doubt flashed through my mind. “Can I really make it?” I wondered. I felt like giving up. Every mile ahead became a challenge for me. I slowed down and almost stopped. Ryan, riding beside me, noticed my hesitation. “You’re doing great, Mom! Just keep going!” he said. Besides, other bikers passing by me also cheered me.
Encouraged by Ryan and other bikers, I regained (重新获得) my energy. Taking a deep breath, I focused on the beat of my riding, just like how my kindergarten kids followed the beat of the counting song. The pain in my legs was still there, but the cheers around me made it feel lighter. Mile after mile, I pushed forward, repeating Ryan’s words in my head: “You can do it, Iron Mommy!” When I finally crossed the finish line, my heart was filled with pride. I had done it. That day, I truly became Ryan’s “iron mommy”.
