When I was growing up, my mom often said that no matter what grades I got in school, as long as I did my best, she’d be proud of me. Then she added, “But if you didn’t get an A, I’ll know you didn’t do your best.” She said it with a smile, but I took it seriously: I shouldn’t settle for anything less than perfect. My greatest weakness is that I’m too much of a perfectionist.
Perfectionism is the desire to be 100% perfect. The goal is zero faults and no failures. In an increasingly competitive world, kids face growing pressure from parents to be perfect and severe criticism when they fall short. Every fault is a blow to their self-esteem (自尊). I’ve lived it myself.
When I won the fifth-grade quiz bowl on world explorers, I beat myself up afterward for missing one question. How could I forget that the sea route to India was discovered by da Gama, but not Magellan? When I made the finals of a Mortal Kombat tournament and won a lifetime pass to a local movie theater, I didn’t celebrate. Third place is the second loser. When I won the first prize in a math test, I was disappointed. Only a 98? Not good enough. There was always a voice in the back of my mind whispering that it wasn’t enough and that I could have done better.
It was during my college years that I started to question the value of this perfectionism. I met people who didn’t seem to be weighed down by the same expectations who accepted their mistakes and saw them as opportunities for growth rather than failures. They taught me that it was okay to be imperfect, that it was human to make mistakes, and that sometimes, the most important lessons come from our failures.
4. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. Why the author became a perfectionist. B. The disadvantage of being a perfectionist.
C. How the author got the good grades in school. D. The feeling of being grateful to the author’s mother.
5. What made the author unsatisfied with what had been achieved?
A. Blame from parents. B. Desire to get first prize.
C. Eagerness to be perfect. D. Pressure of competitions.
6. What made the author change the attitude towards perfectionism?
A. Losing expectation to succeed. B. Realizing the harm of being perfect.
C. Learning lessons from other people’s failure. D. Encountering those accepting imperfection.
7. Which column of a magazine may the text be taken from?
A. Parenting Styles. B. Coming-of-Age Stories.
C. People of Achievement. D. Challenges Facing Youth.
C
Something strange and rather wonderful happens when two people are working together on the same task, a new study shows: key regions of their brains sync up(同步), suggesting we can match each other’s neural (神经的) activity when we’re in groups.
In the study,39 pairs of volunteers were asked to design the interior of a virtual room together via a touchscreen. As well as having their brain activity monitored through a functional near-infrared spectroscopy technique(近红外光谱技术), the participants were watched for signs of eye contact.
To study the participants’ responses, the researchers developed special processing and modeling techniques capable of recognizing social interactions (the eye contact) and mapping them to particular moments and regions of brain activity.
The participants were directed to complete the designated task on their own as well as in pairs, giving the researchers the opportunity to examine both solo brain activity (within-brain synchronizations(同步)or WBSs)and group brain activity (between-brain synchronizations or BBSs).
Working together led to active BBS in the superior and middle temporal regions of the brain. However, WBS wasn’t as strong in the test scenarios.
What’s more, the BBSs were shown to be strongest when one of the individuals raised their gaze to look at the other, suggesting an important role here for social interactions. On the other hand, when the volunteers were working on their own, the WBS was much stronger within the same brain regions.
The investigation’s method is an improvement over previous experiments in “second-person neuroscience”, which simply put two people to work on the same motor task. “As there is already evidence that some kind of brain synchronization also happens when two people are in dialogue with each other, next we’ll apply our method to more detailed social behaviors, such as facial expressions and verbal(言语)communication,” says Yasuyo Minagawa, the lead author of the study.
“We know that human beings are wired to be social creatures, but there’s still a lot we don’t understand about how our brains shift when we’re in company. And I am strongly convinced that our findings can provide insights for answering those unknowns,” adds Minagawa.
8. What can the special processing and modeling techniques be used to do?
A. To motivate the participants to make eye contact.
B. To control the participants’ brain activity if necessary.
C. To match the participants’ eye contact to their brain activity.
D. To measure the frequency of the participants’ social interactions.
9. What happened when the participants worked together to complete a task?
A. Their WBSs gradually became stronger.
B. They completed the task in a shorter time.
C. They were more creative without any eye contact.
D. Their BBSs were strengthened by their eye contact.
10. What do scientists plan to do in the future?
A. Compare human beings with other social creatures.
B. Adopt various analytical approaches in their research.
C. Solve more mysteries about human facial expressions.
D. Study brain synchronization in more complex social settings.
11. What does Yasuyo Minagawa think of the research findings?
A. Surprising. B. Inspiring.
C. Discouraging. D. Confusing.
D
During a party, the host suggested we each share a significant moment from the year. As one woman shared how her pottery (制陶技艺) class had allowed her to explore her creative side, another cheekily said, “Oh, you could totally turn it into a side hustle (副业).” Before she even finished the sentence, I exclaimed, “No! Don’t monetize your hobby!”
I am speaking this from my personal experience! My writing of financial opinion pieces stems from (源于) what was once a hobby. I shared my experiences with personal finance on a little blog, which eventually became opportunities for speaking engagements, freelance writing and even book deals. However, as this became my fulltime career, the work, despite being aligned with (与……一致) my areas of interest and skill, lost the fun factor that motivated me in the beginning.
It also shifted how my brain assessed my other hobbies. Every area of interest turned into a potential moneymaker — or I eschewed certain hobbies when they were time and energy consuming, and wouldn’t yield a profit in the short run.
Oh, how wrong I was.
The pandemic slowed down my work for a period, which forced me to face up to the fact that I otherwise had little to fill my time outside of reading or watching television. As much as I find those activities relaxing, I longed for more creativity and stimulation from a hobby. So in the last two years, I’ve taught myself to crochet (编织). Although it doesn’t bring me any income, it has yielded significant, non-financial returns. There is a reconnection with my creative self, a sense of accomplishment from learning a new skill, and the benefit of challenging my mind and body to learn new ways of moving. Yes, crochet is a skill set I could easily monetize, but profit margins would be nonexistent if you did the maths on cost of supplies and the hours of labor for one piece. Instead, I donate my creations or give them away for birthdays and holidays.
As someone who has had multiple streams of income her entire adult life, I understand that there’s a benefit to having more than one way to earn money. But some hobbies should simply be hobbies. We are allowed to create and learn for personal enrichment, even if it costs us some money — and earns none.
12. What happened after the author turned her hobby into a career?
A. She discovered more of her potential.
B. She gained little pleasure out of the work.
C. She changed her areas of interest and skill.
D. She learned to assess hobbies in various ways.
13. What does the underlined word “eschewed” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Pursued. B. Enjoyed. C. Avoided. D. Considered.
14. What does the author say about her crochet hobby?
A. It is hardly profitable.
B. It helps improve her math skills.
C. It can make her birthday more meaningful.
D. It fails to give her a sense of accomplishment.
15. What can be the best title of the text?
A. It’s okay to monetize a hobby B. Never take up a hobby just for fun
C. It’s never too late to start a new hobby D. Don’t turn your hobby into a side hustle

Don’t Let Personality Types Define You
Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBT), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. MBTI sorts people into 16 different personality types based on four key categories. Although these tests can provide useful insights, it’s important not to let them define or limit you.
___16___ . But people are complex. Our personalities can change over time, depending on experiences and growth. What the MBTI test reveals is just a snapshot of one’s preferences, not a complete definition of who you are. For example, if the test labels you as an “introvert” (性格内向的人), you may feel tempted to avoid social communication because you think it’s not in your nature to be outgoing. But you might find that your ability to enjoy social events increases over time. The key is not to accept the label as an unchangeable fact. ___17___
Similarly, if you are categorized as a “thinking” type, it might lead you to believe that you are always rational ___18___ Emotional response is also an essential part of human nature, and embracing them can enhance your decision-making process and relationships.
Additionally, many people get caught up in the idea that their “type” limits their careers or personal choices. They might think, for instance, that an “introvert” would not be a good leader. ___19___ . Many introverts achieve success through careful listening and thoughtful decision-making. Don’t let de MBTI label stop you from pursuing opportunities that feel right for you.
Finally, one of the most important lessons we can learn from the MBTI is that we are not defined by one test or label. ___20___ . By focusing on our strengths and embracing the full complexity of our personalities, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives. We are all more than the labels we receive.
A. The reality is quite different.
B. The test results should be seen as a guide, not a limitation.
C. The MBTI system provides a simple way to categorize individuals based on their preferences.
D. But there are countless examples of introverts excelling in these types of roles.
E. You should see it as a starting point for self-reflection and growth.
F. However, it’s essential to understand that both parts of the personality are valuable.
G. The MBTI system can sometimes prevent individuals from realizing their full potential.

My wife and I lived in central Africa working as animal doctors to save mountain gorillas(大猩猩)there.
One morning, we were told to help an injured young gorilla in the forest. Along with a few guides, who helped us carry our supplies, we started to get into the rainforest. After a difficult journey, we saw a group of gorillas resting and sitting in the trees, unaware of our presence. We stood quietly, observing the group to find the injured gorilla.
Soon, I spotted our patient; there was a thin piece of metal closely around the gorilla’s hand. The metal, which was probably left by hunters to catch animals, had hurt the gorilla’s hand. And blood was flowing out of the wound. We quietly discussed our action plan. Then I prepared the tranquilizer(镇静剂)gun and stood ready. I had to watch for the right moment when I could be sure to hit the little gorilla.
Suddenly, the youngster showed himself, following his mother, and I fired. The dart(飞镖)hit him, causing him to shout, but it fell out as he climbed onto his mother’s back. Luckily, he had taken in enough of the tranquilizer. Seconds later, he fell slowly off and lay on the ground, sleepy.
The adults of the group came over to check his strange behavior. They stood around him, looking at him in a confused way. Why was he so sleepy? One by one, they came forward to touch him. We watched from a distance as the little gorilla, still trying to move, rolled down the slope toward us.
I immediately threw a cloth over him to hide him from sight. I knew the fact that gorillas would lose interest in an object if they couldn’t see it. And indeed, the adult gorillas, including the young gorilla’s mother, who had been curious just seconds before, left and sat up in trees in the distance again. We had to act quickly to first remove the metal and next deal with the wound. Then, our work would be over.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
I quickly opened my first aid box.

I met people who didn’t seem to be weighed down by the same expectations, who accepted their mistakes and saw them as opportunities for growth rather than failures.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

“As there is already evidence that some kind of brain synchronization also happens when two people are in dialogue with each other, next we’ll apply our method to more detailed social behaviors, such as facial expressions and verbal(言语的)communication,” says Yasuyo Minagawa, the lead author of the study.
D. Confusing.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. B

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To study the participants’ responses, the researchers developed special processing and modeling techniques capable of recognizing social interactions (the eye contact) and mapping them to particular moments and regions of brain activity.(为了研究参与者的反应,研究人员开发了专门的处理和建模技术,这些技术能够识别社交互动(眼神交流)并将其与特定的时刻以及大脑活动的区域相联系)”可知,研究人员之所以研发这种技术是为了将参与者的目光交流与他们的大脑活动情况匹配起来。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的“What’s more, the BBSs were shown to be strongest when one of the individuals raised their gaze to look at the other, suggesting an important role here for social interactions.(当其中一人抬头看另一人时,大脑之间的同步现象表现得最强烈,这暗示了社交互动在此起着重要作用)”可知,实验参与者之间的眼神交流会增强他们大脑之间的同步性。D项表示“他们大脑之间的同步性被眼神交流增强”,是文中句子的同义转述。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段Yasuyo Minagawa说的话“As there is already evidence that some kind of brain synchronization also happens when two people are in dialog with each other, next we’ll apply our method to more detailed social behaviors, such as facial expressions and verbal communication,(由于已有证据表明,当两个人相互交谈时也会发生某种形式的脑部同步现象,接下来我们将把我们的方法应用到更细致的社会行为上,比如面部表情和言语交流)”可推断,科学家计划将扩大脑部同步现象的研究范围。D项表示“在更复杂的社交环境中研究大脑同步现象”,体现了扩大研究范围这层含义。故选D项。
【11题详解】

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“However, as this became my fulltime career, the work, despite being aligned with (与……一致) my areas of interest and skill, lost the fun factor that motivated me in the beginning.(然而,随着这成为我全职工作,尽管这份工作与我的兴趣领域和技能相契合,但其中的乐趣元素却已不复存在,再也无法像当初那样激励我了)”可知,当作者将爱好变成全职工作之后,她就失去了曾经的爱好所带来的乐趣,即她从工作中获得的快乐很少。故选B。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中画线词所在句“Every area of interest turned into a potential moneymaker — or I eschewed certain hobbies when they were time and energy consuming, and wouldn’t yield a profit in the short run.(每一个兴趣领域都变成了潜在的赚钱机会——或者当某些爱好耗时耗力,且在短期内无法带来利润时,我会eschewed它们)”可知,后半句是对前半句的补充说明,由此可知,作者会把感兴趣的领域视为潜在赚钱途径,而对于那些耗时耗力且短期内无利可图的爱好,她的态度应是避开。故划线词“eschewed”与“avoided”意思相近,意为“避开”。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Yes, crochet is a skill set I could easily monetize, but profit margins would be nonexistent if you did the maths on cost of supplies and the hours of labor for one piece.(是的,编织是一项我可以轻松赚钱的技能,但如果你计算一下材料成本和一件作品的工时,利润率将不存在)”可知,作者认为编织这种爱好是很难产生利润的。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Before she even finished the sentence, I exclaimed, “No!
【答案】16. C 17. E 18. F 19. D 20. B
【解析】

【19题详解】
由上文“They might think, for instance, that an ‘introvert’ would not be a good leader.(例如,他们可能认为内向的人不会成为好的领导者。)”可知,这里举例说明人们对内向者在职场上的错误认知,空格后“Many introverts achieve success through careful listening and thoughtful decision-making.(许多内向者通过认真倾听和深思熟虑的决策取得了成功。)” 表明内向者也能成功,而D项“But there are countless examples of introverts excelling in these types of roles.(但有无数内向者在这些角色中表现出色的例子。)” 能很好地衔接前后,用例子反驳前文观点。故选D项。
【20题详解】
由上文“Finally, one of the most important lessons we can learn from the MBTI is that we are not defined by one test or label. (最后,我们可以从MBTI中学到的最重要的教训之一是,我们不是由一个测试或标签来定义的。)”可知,这里说明不能被测试或标签定义,空格处要进一步说明对测试结果的正确看法,而B项“The test results should be seen as a guide, not a limitation.(测试结果应该被看作是一种指导,而不是一种限制。)”指出应把测试结果当作指导而非限制,与后文“By focusing on our strengths and embracing the full complexity of our personalities, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives.(通过关注我们的优势并接纳我们个性的全部复杂性,我们可以过上更丰富、更充实的生活。)” 相呼应,符合文意。故选B项。

【答案】Dear Chris,
How is everything with you? I’m glad to know you will study in our school as an exchange student for one year.
I’m writing to introduce the precautions of communicating with Chinese people. I’d like to suggest what preparations you have to make. First, it would be nice to read some books on Chinese cultures. Second, it couldn’t be better if you learn to use chopsticks, which makes you feel at ease when enjoying Chinese cuisines. By the way, if you practice some everyday greeting expressions, you’ll feel more comfortable during your stay in China.
Hope my proposals could be helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife and I lived in central Africa, working as animal doctors to save mountain gorillas(大猩猩)there.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

It started raining, and we left, staying under trees to watch the little gorilla wake.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I quickly opened my first aid box. Just then, several guides stood and watched to warn us if any gorilla approached. And I quickly took out things like medicine and tools used for handling the wound. Then, my wife and I started working on our patient which had already slept. It took only minutes to remove the metal and handle his wounded hand. After that, the little gorilla still didn’t wake up. Thinking that he would make a quick and complete recovery, we packed up our things.
It started raining, and we left, staying under trees to watch the little gorilla wake. After a while, the young gorilla was able to get up and crawl toward the other gorillas, which stayed under trees just as we were, trying to stay out of the rain. We saw that the young gorilla reached the other gorillas and got back to his mother safely. Some adult gorillas, including his mother, looked at his hand and seemed to find the difference. And his mother seemed to be especially happy. Then, we left the rainforest, feeling glad and proud that we had helped save a gorilla.
