Stray (流浪) Dog Brings Sick Newborn Puppy to Vet
The clinic’s security camera caught the action as the mother dog held her newborn pup in her mouth and walked through pouring rain to the clinic’s front door.
In Istanbul, local business owners often feed and care for the city’s stray dogs. Shop owners will set out water stations that strays can use at their leisure. In addition, the Mom dog had been to the clinic herself on a prior occasion for a health issue. Incredibly, she had remembered the location as a place where she could find help.
Eric, a technician working at that time, had noticed something on the camera’s feed and went to investigate. To his shock, a dog sat waiting outside their door with her young, male pup. Eric immediately grabbed the cold-as-ice puppy from its mother’s mouth. Then he and his colleague, Baturalp, worked frantically to revive the puppy.
“When I checked it, we noticed a very slow heartbeat,” Baturalp explained. “That’s why I said ‘It’s a hope, maybe he’ll live,’ and we started the fight.” The determined pair used an adrenaline (肾上腺素) shot and warmed the puppy with a hair dryer. As they eagerly worked on saving the pup’s life, Mom patiently stayed at their side. She continuously stared over the counter to get a look of her pup.
Thanks to the clinic staff, the puppy recovered and returned to health. Of a litter of six, he and one other puppy survived. “They are doing very well right now; they are in good health,” Baturalp confirmed of Mom and her two newborn pups. Mom and her puppies are currently up for adoption with the hope that all three are taken to the same forever home.
The Mom is a hero. The incredible lengths that she went through to find help for her puppy is an example of the greatness of mother. We also honor the unselfish and caring actions of the clinic staff.

Experts Say Stone was Probably Old Threshold
The Stone of Destiny (命运) has entered legend as one of the most ancient and mysterious handmade articles in Scotland. Small and made of sandstone, it was initially part of the crowning ceremonies of the Scots kings and it was later placed beneath the Coronation (加冕) Chair in Westminster Abbey.
Now it can be shown that the Stone of Destiny may originally have been a doorstep. The handmade articles had scientific checks before moving from Edinburgh Castle to its new home at Perth Museum, which opened last month. Experts believe that the wear on the top was caused by footsteps prior to its use as the crowning stone.
The first detailed account of the Stone being used in the coronation of a king was that of Alexander Ⅲ in 1249. One legend of the Stones origin held that it was “Jacob’s pillow”, the stone on which angels showed Jacob a vision of a stairway to Heaven. The 152kg Stone was said to have been transported from ancient Egypt to the Hill of Tara in Ireland and later taken to Scone.
But analysis was carried out recently on the Stone in preparation for its visit to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation of King Charles last year. That showed it was mined from the Scone area, suggesting it may originally have been used in a church or Roman building.
The Stone was used during the coronations of kings of Scotland until 1296 when it was seized by King Edward I of England. He had it built into the Coronation Chair at Westminster, where it was used in the coronation of the kings of England. But experts said, “Even several hundred years of such a ceremony wouldn’t create the level of wear we see. It’s more likely that the stone had earlier served as a step, although we don’t know the background for this.”
The Stone was officially returned to Scotland in 1996 and was housed with the Honours of Scotland in the Crown Room at Edinburgh Castle.

A. To find a new home for it. B. To check out its origin.

The question had been weighing on my mind for years. One quiet afternoon when Mother was seventy-eight, I finally gathered the courage to ask, “Did you ever know your half-sisters and brothers?”
She looked up from the photos in her lap, her fingers pausing over a discolored picture. “Three sisters and one brother,” she said softly. “I hired a detective (侦探) once... found them... but never contacted them.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “They likely didn’t know I existed.”
I reached for her hand, sensing the decades of hesitation. Though she rarely spoke of her childhood, I knew some of it-her mother’s early death, being raised by unwilling relatives, the father who disappeared from her life. Yet despite this, she had built a beautiful existence-marrying my kind-hearted father, becoming an successful artist, and creating the warm home she’d never had.
When she passed away at ninety-one, I often wondered about those unknown relatives. Would searching for them betray her memory? Then, eighteen months later, a miracle occurred. A distant cousin researching our family tree contacted me with astonishing news. “Your mother’s siblings have been looking for her too,” he said, sharing their contact information. The timing seemed fateful, especially when my son Jonah revealed his own coincidence-a DNA match on Ancestry.com with a woman named Jamie.
“Grandma’s birth name was Johnson,” I reminded Jonah. When he entered it into the chat, the response came within hours: “We’ve been searching for Mary Johnson since 1978!”
That evening, I found myself on a three-way call with Bobbie, my mother’s youngest half-sister. Hearing her emotional voice-so similar to Mom’s-my hands trembled. “We looked for her,” Bobbie wept. “After Dad died, my brother David placed newspaper ads, even went on radio shows.”
As I shared stories of my mother’s life-her art, her kindness, the family she created-I felt an unexpected peace. The missing pieces of our family puzzle were finally coming together.

【答案】范文
In the months that followed, I came to know this “new” family. We exchanged countless emails and photos, each message deepening our connection. Bobbie sent me old family pictures, including one of our grandfather I’d never seen before, his eyes twinkling with a familiar warmth. We talked about our mothers’ shared love for gardening, a characteristic that skipped a generation in me but bloomed in my daughter. Every online conversation got us closer, and finally we had a reunion.
I will never forget the first family reunion. We gathered at Bobbie’s cozy home, surrounded by autumn leaves and laughter. As I hugged David, my mother’s long-lost brother, tears streamed down our faces. Jamie, Jonah’s DNA match, gave me a painting she’d created, its colors mirroring the joy in the room. We shared stories late into the night, our voices combining like a song. At that moment, I felt my mother’s spirit beside us, her silent approval filling the air. The hole in my heart, left by years of uncertainty, was finally filled with the warmth of family.

8. What do we know about the Stone of Destiny?
A. It has a legendary story. B. It can change people’s destinies.
C. It’s a fine piece of artwork. D. It used to be the king’s chair.
9. What can we say about the Stone of Destiny from paragraph 2?
A. It has scientific value. B. It was an originally normal stone.
C. It’ll be housed in a castle. D. It was worn out by ceremonies.
10. Why was the Stone of Destiny analyzed recently?
A. To find a new home for it. B. To check out its origin.
C. To prepare for a coronation. D. To confirm its magic.
11. Where was the Stone of Destiny mainly kept in history?
A. In Edinburgh Castle. B. In a Scotland church.
C. In Perth Museum. D. In Westminster Abbey.

The Grand Canal, also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, is the longest man-made river in the world. Starting in the capital Beijing, it passes through several provinces, linking China’s five main river basins (流域).
The oldest parts of the canal date back to the 5th century BC when it offered an important means of transportation and supply of food to the population. From ancient to modern times, the Grand Canal has been contributing to the country’s development. It represents the wisdom and determination of the Chinese people. In 2014, the Grand Canal was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
China has taken many measures to protect and develop the Grand Canal and the areas around it. The construction of cultural and ecological (生态的) parks along the canal is one of the most important elements of protective measures. The Beijing section of the Grand Canal, located in Tongzhou, is one of the city’s popular tourist spots. The Grand Canal Forest Park was built along its shores, featuring deep forests and beds of flowers. Visitors enjoy camping, cycling and boat trips there, taking a vacation away from the fast pace of city life.
Dezhou City is also taking advantage of the canal. Over the past 20 years, the city has insisted on non-commercial development on both sides of this section of the Grand Canal. The city has turned unused areas into gardens, and wastelands into wetlands along the riverbank—a series of measures aimed at restoring the original appearance of the canal.
The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal has continued to serve as a link between northern and southern China. It also further promotes the economic, agricultural and ecological development of the cities and towns along its banks.
