Olivia Hillier’s side hustle (副业) started with a $5 T-shirt she found at a thrift store (旧货店).
Medical student Hillier had some experience of selling a few of her own old clothing items on an app called Poshmark. She never thought much of it. But one day she noticed other Poshmark sellers were profiting from selling thrift store finds. Because of her student loans, Hillier began studying their strategies and using them to create her own side hustle. That first T-shirt sold for $20. Since then, Hillier’s side hustle has brought in more than $117,000, including $85,000 last year alone. It currently averages $6,000 to $7,000 of profit per month, helping her lately purchase a five-bedroom house.
Hillier’s side hustle began in August 2020, when she noticed that other Poshmark sellers were posting thousands of items that couldn’t have been from their own closets (衣柜). She learned that many were sourcing their items from thrift stores. She spent the next two months testing various sellers’ methods. Then she centered on one style — bright vintage (古典的) pieces — because those items are sold the most quickly.
Hillier’s side hustle didn’t really pay off, though, until she found a balance between selling clothes and medical school. On Fridays, she’d run from classes to thrift stores, spending those evenings sorting and cleaning clothes. On Sundays, she’d take snaps of her new stock (存货). On Mondays, in between hospital rotations (换班), she’d upload the new products onto her Poshmark closet. And every other day, she’d run to the post office. “You’ve got to do it on a regular basis,” Hillier says. “If I didn’t love it so much, I wouldn’t make the time for it.”
Now, some of Hillier’s side hustle’s money covers her down payment on a house. The rest will go towards new furniture, travel, her two dogs and student loan payments. “A lot of people can’t get a stable job in the medical school because they don’t have the time or flexibility,” Hillier says. “It’s nice to not only have time to do something I like, but afford other things. I will keep this business moving on when I’m an attending doctor.”
4. What made Hillier decide to start her side hustle?
A. Her great love for fashionable clothes.
B. Her need to earn money at the moment.
C. Her purpose of making a career change.
D. Her early success in selling old clothes.
5. How did Hillier prepare for her side hustle?
A. By becoming a user of Poshmark.
B. By learning from others’ experience.
C. By contacting some Poshmark sellers.
D. By filling her closet with bright vintage clothes.
6. What is the key to Hillier’s success in her side hustle?
A. Knowing customers’ tastes. B. A big collection of clothes.
C. Following a routine. D. A large amount of free time.
7. What does Hillier plan to do in the future according to the text?
A. Hold on to both her side hustle and work.
B. Apply for a more flexible job.
C. Transform her side hustle into a hobby.
D. Buy another new house.
C
Do phone calls from long-lost friends really excite you? You’re not alone. A new study finds people often underestimate how much their old friends will appreciate receiving a call from them out of the blue. Meanwhile, the friend getting the call places a much higher value on the surprise social interaction. “People are fundamentally social beings and enjoy bonding with others,” explains lead author Peggy Liu, PhD, from the University of Pittsburgh, in a media release. Researchers conducted several experiments involving over 5,900 people to look at what factors play into the amount of appreciation someone feels when others contact them.
In one experiment, researchers asked half of the participants to remember the last time they contacted someone in their social circle after not speaking with them for a really long time. The rest of the group took the opposite approach, remembering when a long-lost friend reached them by phone.
The two groups then had to rate on a seven-point scale (1 meaning “not at all” and 7 meaning “to a great extent”) how much the person receiving this communication appreciated, or felt grateful, or pleased about the message. For people making the call, this meant guessing how much their friend enjoyed hearing from them. For the people receiving the call, they simply had to rate how much they appreciated hearing from a long-lost pal. Results showcase the people reaching their friend significantly underrated their friend’s appreciation when the two groups were compared.
“I sometimes hesitate before contacting people in my social circle for a variety of reasons. When that happens, I think about these research findings and remind myself that other people may also want to reach me and hesitate for the same reasons,” Liu concludes. “I then tell myself that I would appreciate it so much if they reached me and that there is no reason to think they would not similarly appreciate my reaching them.”
8. Which of the following best explains “out of the blue” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Delightedly. B. Instantly. C. Regularly. D. Unexpectedly.
9. What are the researchers’ conclusions based on?
A. The comparison between the data from two groups.
B. Their observation of social interaction among participants.
C Their analysis of participants’ attachment to their old friends.
D. Their investigation into the social connections of participants.
10. What can we learn about the participants reaching their friends?
A. They tended to be more sociable.
B. They expressed different grades of gratitude.
C. Their friends might hesitate to contact them for various reasons.
D. Their friends were more grateful for their calls than they had expected.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Improve Your Communication Skills.
B. Observe the Law of Social Interaction.
C. Have No Hesitation in Reaching Your Friend.
D. Promote a Closer Friendship by Calling Your Friend.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. Many forms of cancers could be cured if discovered early and treated properly. But identifying it is quite an effort. Now a new study may offer an approach.
Researchers in France recently found that insects, including ants, have a powerful sense of smell and can quickly learn to find out cancerous cells (细胞). The researchers experimented with 36 ants of the species Formica fusca. They first trained the ants by placing a sugar solution near the cancerous cells. Half of the ants were taught to recognize one type of cancer, and the rest were taught another. Then the ants were put near the healthy cells and the cancerous cells. It turned out that when the sugar solution was taken away, the ants could still find out the cancerous cells. In the test, the ants moved towards the cancerous cells they learned to discover, even if they had to choose between different cancer varieties.
This isn’t the first time that animals’ sense of smell has been used to identify cancerous cells. Earlier studies have suggested that dogs are good at smelling out cancerous cells. “Ants equal dogs in terms of smelling abilities,” the researchers wrote. “In some regards, ants are better than dogs because they can learn extremely fast — less than 30 minutes for most ants — with a low-cost method that can be achieved by anyone after a couple of days of training, while training a dog to properly smell out cancerous cells requires several months to a year and it also costs much.”
More clinical (临床的) tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals. The researchers’ next step will be to further study whether ants could make themselves useful in other real-world situations where dogs are now used. They believe that the method could possibly be adapted to other challenging tasks.
12. What can we learn about the ants in the experiment?
A. They were used for curing cancer.
B They fed mainly on cancerous cells.
C. They preferred healthy cells to cancerous cells.
D. They could tell different cancerous cell varieties apart.
13. How are ants better than dogs according to the researchers?
A. Ants have a stronger sense of smell. B. Ants have more correct results.
C. Ants are much more cost-effective. D. Ants can be used for longer periods.
14. What will the researchers do next?
A. Explore other possible uses of ants.
B. Experiment with other species of ants.
C. Use ants instead of dogs in real-world situations.
D. Promote the use of ants in hospitals around the world.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ants can identify cancerous cells.
B. Cancer is a leading cause of death.
C. Cancer can be cured sooner or later.
D. Ants and dogs have good smelling abilities.

I was 15 when I walked into McCarley Bookstore in Ashland. As I was looking at titles on the shelves, the man behind the counter, who looked about 50, asked if I’d like a job. I needed to start saving for college, so I said yes.
I worked after school during the summer for the lowest wages, and the job helped pay for my freshman year of college. I would work many other jobs: I made coffee in the Students’ Union during college; I was a hotel maid and even made maps for the U.S. Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most satisfying jobs.
One day a woman asked me for books on cancer. She seemed anxious. I showed her almost everything we had at that time in store and found other books we could order. She left the store less worried, and I’ve always remembered the pride I felt in having helped her.
Years later, as a young newspaper reporter in Los Angeles, I heard from a friend that bookstore owner McCarley had died. I was deeply saddened. So I drove back to Ashland to attend his funeral. Before the service, I went into the bookstore again. The bookstore was exactly as I remembered. The bookshelves were still full of the same old books, and the familiar smell of old books filled the air. As I walked around, I realized that I had to do something to pay my respect to McCarley. I spoke to the current owner, who was one of McCarley’s former employees. She told me that the bookstore was facing some difficulties. Many people preferred to buy books online, and the store’s sales were dropping.
Suddenly, an idea flashed into my mind. I decided to use my skills as a reporter to help the bookstore. I knew I could write a story about the bookstore’s history and its special place in the community.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I spent the next few days interviewing old customers and collecting stories about the bookstore.

Do phone calls from long-lost friends really excite you? You’re not alone. A new study finds people often underestimate how much their old friends will appreciate receiving a call from them out of the blue. Meanwhile, the friend getting the call places a much higher value on the surprise social interaction. “People are fundamentally social beings and enjoy bonding with others,” explains lead author Peggy Liu, PhD, from the University of Pittsburgh, in a media release. Researchers conducted several experiments involving over 5,900 people to look at what factors play into the amount of appreciation someone feels when others contact them.
In one experiment researchers asked half of the participants to remember the last time they contacted someone in their social circle after not speaking with them for a really long time.
C. Their analysis of participants’ attachment to their old friends.

B. They fed mainly on cancerous cells.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】 I spent the next few days interviewing old customers and collecting stories about the bookstore. I talked to people who had been coming to the store for decades, hearing about how McCarley Bookstore had been a gathering place for book lovers, a source of comfort in difficult times, and a place where they discovered new worlds through books. I also dug out some old photos of the store over the years. Using my writing skills, I carefully wove these stories together. I made sure to mention McCarley, the original owner, and how his love for books had created this special place. I included the time when I helped the woman looking for books on cancer, highlighting the store’s role in providing real help to customers.
The story was published in the newspaper, and the response was surprising. People from all over the community and even some from neighboring towns came to visit the bookstore. They were eager to experience the place they had read about. Some bought books, not just because they needed them but to support the store. The sales started to rise, and the current owner was overjoyed. The bookstore once again became a lively place, filled with the sound of people discussing books. It was a great comfort to know that my small effort had helped keep this special place alive, and I felt a sense of pride, just like the pride I felt when I helped that woman years ago.
