“Trails (路线) are there for, a reason,” my husband always told me when we were hiking. “The high grass and wooded areas can be dangerous.” His warnings were usually confirmed by the posted signs that instructed people to stay on the trails.
The problem was that I had a hard time staying on the trail. My curiosity about what I couldn’t see forced me to follow sounds I couldn’t identify. Often I went off the trails to get photos of birds flying out of my camera’s view into trees and bushes.
My careless days of going off designed trails changed the day I saw something huge and dangerous that generally lived off the trails.
We were on our way to one of our favorite trails. About 100 yards ahead of our car I saw a dip (凹陷处) in the road from a distance, so I warned my husband to be careful.
However, as we got closer, we realized the dark line was not a dip in the road. Instead, it seemed to be moving. It was a rattlesnake (响尾蛇) with a prominent bulge (鼓起) in its stomach. The sun was warm and bright. I was so excited. I grabbed my digital camera from the seat and started to open the door. Thankfully, my husband stopped me from stepping out into danger. He did, however, let me roll the window down and take photos.
The snake lay there while I filled my memory card with its image. Then the giant snake lifted its head and went into the bush.
When we reported the giant animal to the park service, the ranger (管理员) patiently explained why the park posted signs to stay on the trail. “It isn’t just that there are wild animals and poisonous snakes out there, but when people go off-track, they also step on wildflowers and cause erosion problems.”
I got the message loud and clear. When I tell this story to my grandchildren, I point out that rules are there for a reason, too.
4. Why did the author go off the trail?
A. To collect data on plants. B. To follow her interests.
C. To seek adventure. D. To avoid crowds.
5. How did the author react at the first sight of the snake?
A. She warned her husband of the danger. B. She became nervous and frightened.
C. She wanted to take a picture. D. She called the park service.
6. Why were stay-on-trail signs posted according to the park ranger?
A. For safety and environmental consederations. B. To ensure visitors’ enjoyable experience.
C. For park management and maintenance. D. To prevent visitors from getting lost.
7. What did the author learn from her encounter with the snake?
A. Carefulness is necessary in unfamiliar areas. B. Unexpected challenges can by exciting.
C. A guid is essential in the wild. D. Following rules is important.

Coca-Cola will be using over 4.1 billion kilograms of plastic a year by the year 2030, unless it stops using single-use plastic, according to a report from the conservation organization Oceana.
Oceana also estimates that by 2030, an annual 602 million kilograms of Coca-Cola’s plastic packaging will be polluting the world’s oceans and waterways. The report says that this is enough plastic to fill the stomachs of 18 million blue whales. Oceana made its estimates using Coca-Cola’s own reported data on its use of plastic packaging between 2018 and 2023, and a forecast of the company’s future sales growth based on past trends.
A 2024 study found that Coca-Cola is already the world’s worst plastic-polluting brand. Oceana says the problem is Coca-Cola’s use of single-use plastic instead of reusable packaging. Reusable bottles can be used up to 25 times if made of thicker plastic, and up to 50 times if made of glass. Coca-Cola previously had a goal of using 25% reusable packaging by 2030, but announced that it had given up that goal at the end of 2024.
Instead, the company says it will increase the use of recycled plastic in its packaging and increase collection of single-use plastic bottles for further recycling. However, Oceana says that relying on the use of recycled materials and collection of plastic for recycling won’t reduce the great influence of Coca-Cola’ s plastic footprint.
The organization’s Senior Vice President Matt Littlejohn said: “Single-use plastic is bad for the oceans, human health, and business. Recycling can’t solve the company’s out-of-control plastic problem. Reuse can.” He added, “Single-use plastic bottles made with recycled content can — just like bottles made of virgin plastic — still become marine pollution and harm ocean life.” As well as harming sea life, plastic use is also harmful for human health. Several studies have connected plastic pollution and microplastics to serious health conditions, such as cancer, heart disease and dementia. Oceana suggests Coca-Cola should take real action that can address its plastic problem now, namely replacing single-use packaging with reusable packaging.
8. What was Coca-Cola’s original plan for 2030?
A. To use 25% reusable packaging.
B. To stop all plastic bottle production.
C. To recycle 100% of its plastic waste.
D. To replace plastics with glass bottles.
9. What is Oceana’s attitude toward Coca-Cola’s recycled plastic policy?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Reserved. D. Indifferent.
10. What can we infer according to Matt Littlejohn?
A. Blue whales are the most affected by plastic waste.
B. Reusable packaging is a better solution than recycling.
C. Microplastics mainly come from non-recycled bottles.
D Coca-Cola’s new plan will solve plastic pollution effectively.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. How to Stop Ocean Pollution.
B. Coca-Cola’s New Reusable Plan.
C. A Growing Threat of Plastic Bottles.
D. Coca-Cola’s Plastic Pollution Problem.

Next time you’re walking through a park on a hot day, take a moment to sit under a big old tree. You’ll find that the temperature is something like 2℃ cooler than if you were beneath an umbrella. Why? Because a mature tree releases a massive amount of water from its leaves, which cools the surrounding air, just like the way sweating cools our bodies down.
So a single tree influences the microclimate around it — but what about an entire forest? That’s the question explored in The Power of Trees by German forester Peter Wohlleben. He writes about trees, ecosystems, roots and the many creatures who live in and among them in a fresh, lively way. He believes forests and trees make decisions about their survival, protect and look after their young.
For readers, some of this language is familiar, and some may know that this style has been a source of derision (嘲笑) in the past. However, it’s this down-to-earth, conversational style that makes the book come to life and makes complex science accessible. He explains processes, such as the way trees access and use sugars at different times of the year, in simple, everyday terms.
Wohlleben writes in a calm style, but he can’t hide his anger with the way people today — including many environmentalists — now “think of trees as little more than biological storage units for carbon dioxide either while they are alive or when they are dead”. This narrow perspective ignores the vast beneficial effects that forests generate for global temperature management. His claims and criticisms are backed by emerging science and new research, as well as practical observations of how the presence of forests changes the landscape nearby.
This book is wise and thought-provoking. In his chapter highlighting the role of wolves as top predators (捕食者) in preserving the forest, Wohlleben writes: “We can come at protecting forests from whatever direction we want, but the results are always the same. We must put less pressure on nature by exploiting (开发) it less. We must strengthen forests by allowing them to take care of themselves.”
12. What does The Power of Trees explore?
A. Temperature management. B. The loss of water in leaves.
C. Formation of microclimates. D. The vital role that forests play.
13. Which can describe the language in the book?
A. Complex. B. Fancy. C. Approachable. D. Professional.
14. How does Wohlleben deal with people’s narrow perspective on forests?
A. He treats it lightly. B. He turns a deaf ear to it.
C. He refers to it selectively. D. He argues against it convincingly.
15. What does Wohlleben suggest for protecting forests?
A. Fighting climate change. B. Leaving them alone.
C. Returning farmland to forest. D. Driving wolves away.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lena’s father had always been a man of few words. Since her mother passed away five years ago, he had shouldered the responsibility of raising her alone, working double shifts (班次) as a taxi driver to support his family. Their small apartment was always filled with an unspoken tension — the kind that comes from two people living together but never truly connecting, except that, each night, he’d leave a glass of warm milk on her desk with his usual “Don’t stay up too late.”
One Saturday, while cleaning the store room, Lena came across an old shoebox. Driven by curiosity, she took it out and couldn’t wait to find out what was inside. When she opened it, a scent of old paper greeted her. Inside were many black-and-white photos from before she was born. One photo caught her eye — her young father kneeling in a sunny field, smiling happily as he took pictures with a camera. He looked so different from the tired man she knew now.
That evening, as they sat across from each other at their usual silent dinner, Lena gathered her courage. “Dad,” she began hesitantly, “I found some old photos today...”, Her father’s fork froze mid-air. He quickly looked at her, then away. “That was a lifetime ago,” he murmured, pushing his food around his plate. After a brief silence, he added quietly, “Had to sell that camera when you started middle school,” The way his voice cracked on the last word made Lena's heart ache.
The next day, she searched online and found Thompson’s Vintage Camera Shop — a family-owned store just three blocks from her school. Mr. Thompson, a kind-eyed man in his sixties, had a similar camera her father once owned. When she explained her situation, his face softened, “How about this?” he said, “You help me around the shop after school for a month and the camera is yours.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
For a month, Lena raced between school, homework, and the camera shop.

10 What can we infer according to Matt Littlejohn?
A. Blue whales are the most affected by plastic waste.
B. Reusable packaging is a better solution than recycling.
C. Microplastics mainly come from non-recycled bottles.
D. Coca-Cola’s new plan will solve plastic pollution effectively.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. How to Stop Ocean Pollution.
B. Coca-Cola’s New Reusable Plan.
C. A Growing Threat of Plastic Bottles.
D. Coca-Cola’s Plastic Pollution Problem.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. D

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Coca-Cola previously had a goal of using 25% reusable packaging by 2030, but announced that it had given up that goal at the end of 2024.(可口可乐此前的目标是到2030年使用25%的可重复使用包装,但在2024年底宣布放弃了这一目标)”可知,可口可乐2030年的原计划是使用25%的可重复使用包装。故选A项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“However, Oceana says that relying on the use of recycled materials and collection of plastic for recycling won’t reduce the great influence of Coca-Cola’s plastic footprint.(然而,Oceana表示,依靠使用回收材料和收集塑料进行回收利用,并不能减少可口可乐塑料足迹的巨大影响)”可知,Oceana认为可口可乐的回收塑料政策不能解决问题,所以会对其持批判态度。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中Matt Littlejohn认的话“Single-use plastic is bad for the oceans, human health, and business. Recycling can’t solve the company’s out of control plastic problem. Reuse can.(一次性塑料对海洋、人类健康和企业都有害。回收利用无法解决该公司失控的塑料问题。重复使用可以)”和“Single-use plastic bottles made with recycled content can — just like bottles made of virgin plastic — still become marine pollution and harm ocean life.(用回收材料制成的一次性塑料瓶——就像用原生塑料制成的瓶子一样——仍然会污染海洋,危害海洋生物)”可知,Matt Littlejohn认为回收利用无法解决失控的塑料问题,用回收材料制成的塑料制品仍然会污染海洋,危害海洋生物,所以可重复使用包装是更好的解决方案。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“Coca-Cola will be using over 4.1 billion kilograms of plastic a year by the year 2030, unless it stops using single-use plastic, according to a report from the conservation organization Oceana.(保护组织Oceana的一份报告称,到2030年,可口可乐每年将使用超过41亿公斤的塑料,除非它停止使用一次性塑料)”和第三段中“Oceana says the problem is Coca-Cola’s use of single-use plastic instead of reusable packaging.(Oceana表示,问题在于可口可乐使用一次性塑料而不是可重复使用的包装)”可知,本文主要围绕可口可乐的塑料污染问题展开,分析了原因并建议其用可重复使用包装取代一次性包装。故D项“Coca-Cola’s Plastic Pollution Problem(可口可乐的塑料污染问题)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选D项。

That evening as they sat across from each other at their usual silent dinner, Lena gathered her courage.

【答案】参考范文:
For a month, Lena raced between school, homework, and the camera shop. Every afternoon, Lena worked at the camera shop, helping Mr. Thompson and serving customers. Her hands grew rough from organizing film rolls and polishing lenses, and her feet ached from standing for long hours. Though exhausted, she cherished the hope of seeing her father’s smile again — the way he did in those old photographs. One evening, Mr. Thompson handed her a box. “Your hard work paid off,” he said warmly. Lena’s hands trembled as she cradled the camera. Her eyes glistening with gratitude, she whispered, “Thank you, Mr. Thompson.”
On Father’s Day, Lena woke up early to prepare her surprise. She placed the camera on the kitchen table and waited nervously. When her father came in for breakfast, his weary eyes widened at the sight. After a short pause, his hardened fingers traced the camera’s edges gently, as if touching a memory. For a moment, there was silence. Lena broke it with a soft “Happy Father's Day, Dad!” “Thank you! This means more than you know. Let’s take a photo together,” his voice cracked with emotion. Lena finally saw it — the smile from the photographs. The click of shutter dissolved years of quiet tension, connecting them at last.
