They care too much about grades. B 18. B 19. C 20. M:A new survey shows that Chinese parents are anxious about their children’s education. The survey was conducted by China’s online education platform SmartStudy. com. It was based on answers from 3, 205 parents from Aug. 1 to 15 through online questionnaires. The top three factors causing anxiety in parents are school performance, campus safety and mobile phone addiction. According to the survey, 68 percent of parents felt “very anxious” and “anxious” about their children’s education, while only 6 percent were “not anxious”. They are anxious most when their children are in kindergarten and primary school. More than 44 percent of parents believe learning beyond textbooks is very necessary, and 67 percent agree that taking training classes after school is better for a child’s learning path. The survey also found that 70 percent of parents worry about campus safety. About 83 percent of Chinese parents are worried that their children will become addicted to mobile phones. “The main reason for parents’ anxiety is that they are not strong enough to deal with pressure and easily lose control of their emotions. Also, anxious parents seldom encourage children, which will make children lose their self-confidence,” said psychologist Zhang Yijun. A Tuesdays with Morrie Despite being a sports journalist with a successful career ahead of him, Mitch Albom feels that there is something missing from his life. This all changes when he is reunited with his favourite college professor, Morrie Schwartz. On discovering that Morrie is being weakened by a severe illness, Mitch starts visiting him at his house on Tuesdays. The weekly conversations between Mitch and Morrie result in series of lessons on the meaning of life and how best to live it. Arthur K This book is about dying, but it is not pessimistic. Indeed, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this book is filled with joy and hope. Morrie’s bravery towards the end of his life is inspirational and has made me value my own life more. In fact, far from being a book about death, it’s a book about life, As Morrie says, “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” As Morrie anticipates his own death, he observes everything as though through new eyes — the things around him seem more beautiful than ever before and hold new meanings. From his window, he watches each season change, knowing it could be his last. This encourages us to appreciate what we have, and to make the most of each day. Amy Wang I think this book should be on all school reading lists. After finishing it, I feel I have been given deeper insight into the world and can see things from a different point of view. On the 11th Tuesday, Morrie explains that “... the big things-how we think, what we value — those you must choose yourself. You can’t let anyone — or any society — determine those for you”. While we are living, we tend to get distracted by unimportant things, such as gathering material possessions. I think it’s important for young people to know that making a lot of money won’t always make them happy, or that looking different doesn’t make person abnormal! It’s up to us to find out what is important in our lives and establish our own values. Morrie says that most people “seem half-asleep”, even when they’re doing things they think are important. Reading this book made me feel as if I’d been woken up from a long sleep and finally opened my eyes to the world! Marty Despite its widespread recognition, my first impression was that Tuesdays with Morrie is just made up of collection of over-emotional thoughts and messages, many of which are repeated. But thinking back, it did teach me a lesson or two. The book made me stop and think about how much I am influenced by popular culture and the importance of creating my own values based on love and open communication. Although it isn’t my favourite book, I’d still recommend that people read it — after all, it is something that’s a bit different! 21. What changes Mitch’s life? A. Morrie’s severe illness. B. After graduating from a vocational school, he faced difficulties finding a job. Later, he started to learn to make household utensils (器具) and worked at his uncle’s factory. For two years, Lu traveled 50 kilometers every weekday as an employee of the factory. He said thanks to biking during that time, he was able to improve his shape and started to look like a normal person. Lu had been trying to start his own business since 2002, having been a stall owner, a bicycle repairer, and owner of a newsstand, a telephone shop and a video shop. He made some money from these businesses. In 2012, Lu opened a photo studio and skillfully mastered Photoshop by himself. Many people came to his studio to have their photos shot and asked if he provided photo albums. Seeing this as an opportunity, Lu decided to make photo albums himself. He opened a workshop. However, the business didn’t get off to a good start. When he ran out of ideas, the local disabled people’s association came to help by finding an abandoned school building as a potential site for Lu to operate his business. With such assistance, Lu managed to grow his business quickly. “I would insist on doing things. As long as I start to engage in one thing, I’ll try my best to do it,” says Lu. In 2022, the business turnover of Lu’s factory reached over 13 million yuan. Lu has generously provided jobs for disabled job seekers. Among 42 employees of his paper product factory, 30 are people with disabilities. He not only teaches them how to work, but also encourages them to give full play to their potential. His business not only enables him to support his own family but also helps his employees get rid of poverty. 24. In what way did Lu Hong improve his physical condition? A. By biking to work every weekday. B. By mastering Photoshop. C. By walking 50 kilometers daily. D. By working at his uncle’s factory. 25. What did Lu Hong get from the association? A. Financial support. B. Employment opportunities. C. Training in using Photoshop. D. A place for his business. 26. What does the underlined word “turnover” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. The number of products sold. B. The total value of goods sold. C. The money paid to the government. D. The rate of employee replacement. 27. Which words can best describe Lu Hong? A. Honest and confident. B. Professional and responsible. C. Patient and considerate. D. Determined and helpful. A 25. D 26. B 27. 根据第二段“For two years, Lu traveled 50 kilometers every weekday as an employee of the factory. He said thanks to biking during that time, he was able to improve his shape and started to look like a normal person. (两年来,陆作为工厂的一名员工,每个工作日都要走50公里。他说,多亏了那段时间骑自行车,他能够改善自己的体型,开始看起来像个正常人)”可知,陆鸿每周工作日骑行50公里去上班,从而改善了他的身体状况。故选A。 根据第五段“When he ran out of ideas, the local disabled people’s association came to help by finding an abandoned school building as a potential site for Lu to operate his business. (当他无计可施时,当地残疾人协会来帮忙,找到了一座废弃的校舍,作为陆经营企业的潜在地点。在这样的帮助下,陆的生意迅速增长)”可知,当陆鸿陷入困境时,当地残疾人协会帮助他找到了一个废弃的学校,作为他经营业务的场所。故选D。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段“In 2022, the business turnover of Lu’s factory reached over 13 million yuan.(2022年,陆鸿工厂的生意turnover超过1300万元)”可知,此处介绍的是陆鸿工厂的营业额,即售出货物的总价值,所以turnover的意思是“售出货物的总价值”。 根据第六段““I would insist on doing things. As long as I start to engage in one thing, I’ll try my best to do it,” says Lu.(陆说:“我会坚持做事情。只要我开始做一件事,我就会尽力去做。”)”及最后一段“Lu has generously provided jobs for disabled job seekers. (陆慷慨地为残疾求职者提供工作)”可推断,陆鸿是一个意志坚定且乐于助人的人。故选D。 C We all know the routine by heart: “Please ensure your seats are in the upright position, folding tables are closed, window shades are up, laptops are stored in the overhead bins and electronic devices are set to flight mode.” Now, the first four are reasonable, right? Window shades need to be up so we can see if there is an emergency. Folding tables need to be closed and seats upright so we can get out of the row quickly. Laptops can become dangerous in an emergency, as the seat back pockets are not strong enough to contain them. But why are airplane passengers asked to put their phones in airplane mode? According to the FAA website’s Safety Information page, “The FCC and FAA restrict the use of cell phones for airborne because their signals could interfere (干扰) with critical aircraft instruments. Devices must be used in airplane mode. You may use the Wi-Fi connection on your device if the plane has an installed Wi-Fi system and the airline allows its use.” If passengers don’t switch to airplane mode in-flight, the concern is that a phone’s radio transmissions could get in the way of the systems that planes use during the fight. What’s more, if the captain considers it necessary for safety, such as in a reduced-visibility landing, they have the authority to tell passengers to switch off their phones completely to make absolutely sure they don’t interfere with on-board communications and navigation (导航) equipment. However, the rules are different in different countries. This depends on the communications technology used in different countries and their airline safety regulations. 28. Where can the words in paragraph 1 probably be heard? A. On the bus. B. On the subway. C. On the street. D. On the plane. 29. How are the passengers likely to feel about the routine according to paragraph 2? A. Worried. B. Confused. C. Embarrassed. D. Disappointed. 30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Why Wi-Fi can be used on planes. B. How the FAA’s safety department works. C. Why phones are required to be in airplane mode. D. What rights passengers have on the plane. 31. Which section of a newspaper is the text most probably taken from? A. Travel. B. Sport. C. Environment. D. Art. D 29. B 30. C 31. 根据第一段“Please ensure your seats are in the upright position, folding tables are closed, window shades are up, laptops are stored in the overhead bins and electronic devices are set to flight mode.(请确保您的座椅处于直立位置,折叠桌已关闭,遮阳板已升起,笔记本电脑已存放在头顶行李箱中,电子设备已设置为飞行模式。)” 根据第二段“Now, the first four are reasonable, right? Window shades need to be up so we can see if there is an emergency. Folding tables need to be closed and seats upright so we can get out of the row quickly. Laptops can become dangerous in an emergency, as the seat back pockets are not strong enough to contain them. But why are airplane passengers asked to put their phones in airplane mode?(现在,前四个要求是合理的,对吧?遮阳板需要升起,这样我们才能看到是否有紧急情况。折叠桌需要关闭,座椅需要直立,这样我们才能迅速从座位上站起来。笔记本电脑在紧急情况下可能会变得危险,因为座椅背面的口袋不够结实,无法容纳它们。但是为什么飞机上的乘客被要求将手机设置为飞行模式呢?)”可知,乘客对前四个要求是理解的,但对将手机设置为飞行模式的要求感到困惑。故选B。 【30题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“According to the FAA website’s Safety Information page, “The FCC and FAA restrict the use of cell phones for airborne because their signals could interfere (干扰) with critical aircraft instruments. Devices must be used in airplane mode. You may use the Wi-Fi connection on your device if the plane has an installed Wi-Fi system and the airline allows its use.”(根据FAA网站的安全信息页面,“FCC和FAA限制在飞机上使用手机,因为它们的信号可能会干扰关键的飞机仪器。设备必须使用飞行模式。如果飞机上安装了Wi-Fi系统,并且航空公司允许使用,你可以使用设备上的Wi-Fi连接。”)”可知,第三段主要解释了为什么手机被要求设置为飞行模式。故选C。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。文章主要介绍了飞机上的一些常规要求,并解释了为什么要遵守这些要求,这些内容都与旅行相关,因此这篇文章最有可能来自报纸的旅行部分。故选A。 D An art exhibition that combines scientific knowledge with creative inspiration was recently presented in Albany. The exhibition featured artworks from MIX Artists in the Great Southern that showcased unique art-science cooperation between contemporary artists and marine (海洋的) scientists working in the region. The waters of the south coast and around Albany are well-known for their unique diversity of plants and animals, and the works conveyed important marine science knowledge and current research to a broad audience. The Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) provided opportunities for the artists to learn from marine scientists through talks, presentations and field trips. The artists also followed up with ongoing self-research and observation of their environment. Dr Jenny Shaw, WAMSI Research Director, said, “It’s been a great opportunity to move science into the community and also see different interpretations of marine research topics.” The scientists benefited from explaining their work to different audiences, and the interest from the artists was incredibly high, contributing to a shared appreciation for the marine environment. MIX Artists coordinator Annette Davis said the cooperation gave the artists fantastic insight into another world, and working with the scientists was fundamental to how the artworks had developed. “Responding with intuition (直觉), curiosity and imagination, the artists have interpreted their findings through chosen materials and techniques and created artworks to help move this understanding into the wider community,” Davis said. The pursuit of marine science inspired some artists, whose artworks often centre around the finely-balanced coastal environment and the impact of structural change. Catherine Higham used seagrass and bamboo to make a large listening horn (喇叭) to listen to underwater life. Christine Baker’s work, titled Micro Plastic Menu, was inspired by a talk on microplastic pollution and how it enters food chains. 32. How did WAMSI assist the artists? A. By aiding in materials creation. B. By providing technical guidance. C. By offering a platform for art sales. D. By organizing educational events. 33. What can we infer from the text? A. The art exhibition of scientists is very eye-catching. B. People are much more interested in science than in art. C. The participation of artists contributes to the spread of marine knowledge. D. Artists should go into the classroom to learn cultural knowledge. 34. Why is the work Micro Plastic Menu mentioned in the text? A. To highlight the personal experiences of the artist. B. To illustrate that artists draw inspiration from science. C. To demonstrate the use of technology in contemporary art. D. To emphasize the role of art in environmental conservation. 35. Which is the best title for the text? A. An Art Exhibition by a Famous Marine Artist. B. A Cooperative Art and Marine Science Exhibition. C. An Exhibition Showcasing Traditional Art Forms. D. A Conference Discussing Marine Science Advancements. 32. D 33. C 34. B 35. The old-fashioned house was usually filled with warmth and laughter during the holiday. Upon arriving, however, Lily noticed her cousin Tom seemed unusually quiet. When she asked why, he admitted that he had been struggling with his studies and was anxious about the upcoming college entrance exam. But he was afraid to tell his parents the truth. Determined to change his mind without embarrassing him, Lily decided to keep him company before the dinner. It was a very cold snowy day. The wind was blowing violently outside and the snow was piling up rapidly. The adults busied themselves preparing the dinner in the kitchen, leaving Lily and Tom with nothing to do. The two teenagers wandered into their grandparents’ little study. As Lily was looking for some interesting books to read she suddenly heard Tom calling out from behind the bookshelf, ‌“Lily, come and look at this!” Rushing over, she found him holding a small, dust-covered wooden box. Together, they opened the box and found a diary hidden at the bottom. As they read through the yellowed pages they discovered that it belonged to their grandfather. The diary was filled with stories of his youth. One story in particular caught Lily’s attention. It was about how their grandfather had faced a difficult time when he was still in senior high school. However, he never gave up, and with the help of his family and teachers, he was eventually admitted into his dream university. As she read on, she was deeply impressed by their grandfather’s story. Just then, Lily realized this was exactly what Tom should learn more about. At dinner, Lily excitedly shared the discovery with the family. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tom listened carefully all the time when their grandfather was talking. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: At dinner, Lily excitedly shared the discovery with the family. Then she suggested that their grandfather share the story with all the family members. At first, he hesitated but finally agreed. He shyly spoke of the struggles he had faced as a teenager and how his family’s and teachers’ support gave him strength to overcome them. ‌“After I finally opened up, I realized I wasn’t alone,” he said. ‌“That knowledge gave me the courage to keep going.” Tom listened carefully all the time when their grand father was talking. When their grandfather finished, he took a deep breath and shared with the whole family his own worries and problems, and promised to seek help whenever necessary. Although it was still cold outside, the old house seemed to grow even warmer. After finishing it I feel I have been given deeper insight into the world and can see things from a different point of view. B. The book Tuesdays with Morrie. C A successful career as a sports journalist. D. The weekly conversations between Morrie and him. 22. What does Amy Wang learn from the book Tuesdays with Morrie? A. One should learn to help others. B. One should make full use of each day. C One should establish her/his own values. D. One should avoid getting distracted by things. 23. What’s Marty’s first impression of the book Tuesdays with Morrie? A. Just so-so. B. Impressive. C. Moving. D. Refreshing. B Lu Hong, a man with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, has been named China’s “Forrest Gump” after becoming a successful factory owner who employs disabled people. C We all know the routine by heart: “Please ensure your seats are in the upright position, folding tables are closed, window shades are up, laptops are stored in the overhead bins and electronic devices are set to flight mode.” Now, the first four are reasonable, right? D. Art. D An art exhibition that combines scientific knowledge with creative inspiration was recently presented in Albany. D. As Lily was looking for some interesting books to read, she suddenly heard Tom calling out from behind the bookshelf, ‌“Lily, come and look at this!” Rushing over, she found him holding a small, dust-covered wooden box.
