I spent this past weekend exploring Edinburgh, Scotland. I went with my program group, CIS Abroad.
On Friday we took the train from London to Edinburgh and arrived in the evening, with just enough time to see around the High Street and have dinner.
On Saturday we visited different castles in the Highlands. The coolest castle that we saw was Doune Castle. The super great part about this castle is that it has been used for many different films, such as Monty Python, The Holy Grail, Outlander and Game of Thrones. In Game of Thrones it was used as the town of Winterfell, which I thought was great.
After Doune Castle we went to Deanston Distillery, which was built in 1966. We went on a tour of the facilities (设备) and saw how they made Scottish whiskey. It was great to see all of the effort that went into it. They showed us the storage room where they kept all of the casks (木桶), and there may be thousands in that room. One of the casks was from 40 years ago; the tour guide said that this cask would sell for about 4,000 pounds a bottle, which would be about 5,300 American dollars! I thought that was unbelievable.
The last day we had some free time to explore the town and shop for gifts. We also saw the most beautiful view of Edinburgh. It seemed like we climbed a million stairs up a hill to see the view, but let me tell you it was totally worth every step.
Scotland now has a special place in my heart. Two days is not enough to learn the city well, so I will certainly be back to one of the most beautiful places on earth.

B. One can buy local gifts there.
C. It is well-known as a film-making place.

6. How did the author respond when she heard about the wine in the cask from 40 years ago?
A. She thought highly of its quality.
B. She was shocked by its high price.
C. She was surprised at the workers’ great skills.
D. She strongly wanted to bring one bottle home.
7. What did the author think of her time in Edinburgh?

Could animals from the past one day walk among us? One company is now looking to introduce extinct(已灭绝的) animals into the real world.
US company Colossal Biosciences announced on Jan 31 that it would be trying to bring back to life the dodo—a large bird that was native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian ocean. They lived there until the 17th century.
“[The place] to reintroduce the dodo into the wild would be Mauritius,” Ben Lamm, the co-founder of the company told The Guardian. A reintroduction of dodos to the ecosystem of the island, instead of just being a novelty(新奇), is thought to potentially bring benefits to the endemic (地方性的) plants and other animals that already live there.
Having discovered the genetic code(基因序列) of extinct animals from their remains, the company seeks to change the DNA of currently living creatures to make them close to the animal of the past. The Nicobar pigeon(尼柯巴鸠) will be used as the genetic base for the dodo, according to MIT Technology Review.
The company also has plans for other extinct animals. When the company first formed in 2021 it announced its plans to bring back mammoths(猛犸象). They believe that mammoths introduced to the Arctic regions could help tackle climate change as they turn the wet tundra(苔原) into sunlight-reflecting dry grasslands by cating the grass, according to The New Yorker.
However, some people are skeptical. According to BBC Science Focus, with a third of all bird species currently in decline, strategies to protect existing species are needed more than ever instead of focusing on animals of the past.
Despite the lack of consensus (共识) it has yet to be seen if this miracle of science can actually be pulled off. A real-life Jurassic Park isn’t likely to open anytime soon.
8. What do we know about dodos, according to the text?
A. They were native to the island of Mauritius. B. They died out around the 19th century.
C. They will be reintroduced into India. D. They could help slow down climate change.
9. What will be used as the genetic base for dodos?
A. The remains of the dodo. B. The Nicobar pigeon.
C. The mammoth. D. The current DNA data bank.
10. Why do some people have doubts about Colossal Biosciences’ plans?
A. They think extinct animals are not important.
B. They think the plans will not work in practice.
C. They believe the plans go against nature.
D. They believe protecting existing species is more necessary.
11. What’s the author’s attitude toward the reintroduction of extinct animals?
A. It’s worth trying. B. It sounds risky.
C. It will bring many benefits. D. It still has a long way to go.
D
Nearly 13,000 cultural relics have been unearthed from six pits (坑) of the Sanxingdui Ruins site, including many objects and statues never seen before, and they help present a more complete view of the culture of the ancient Shu Kingdom.
The digging work mainly aimed at the sacrificial (献祭的) area of the ruins and six newly discovered pits. From 2020 to 2022, a total area of 1,834 square meters was explored in the sacrificial area, which covered a total area of nearly 13,000 square meters.
The significant discoveries include thousands of cultural relics made of different materials such as bronze, gold and jade and unearthed in six new pits, ruins of architecture, time of building the pits and the proof of exchanges between the ancient Shu Kingdom and the Central Plains in the Shang dynasty. Among the cultural relics newly unearthed, archaeologists found 3,155 comparatively complete relics.
“All cultural relics have significant meanings for archaeological research. If I have to choose one, I want to select the crowned bronze statue with a snake’s body,” said Ran Honglin, director of the Sanxingdui Cultural Relics and Archeology Research Institute. He noted that the relics prove the diversity of Chinese culture and offer another powerful example of Chinese civilization’s unity in diversity, because the bronze statue’s shape melted cultural factors of different areas in China during ancient times.
Researchers used Carbon-14 dating to confirm that nearly 200 samples unearthed in different pits were made from 1131 BC to 1012 BC, so they concluded that in addition to the fifth and sixth pits appearing later, the rest of the pits should have been built in the late Shang dynasty, dating from 3,000 to 3,200 years ago. The discovery has solved an argument over the age of sacrificial pits found in the past three decades.
“The digging and research work is continuing. There will be more discoveries with further work.” Ran said.
12. What is the significance of the newly unearthed relics?
A. They are the first complete relics to be unearthed.
B. They are helpful in protecting the Sanxingdui Ruins site.
C. They prove statues appeared first in the ancient Shu Kingdom.
D. They help better understand the culture of the ancient Shu Kingdom.
13. What makes the crowned bronze statue an example of Chinese civilization’s unity in diversity?
A. Its origin. B. Its form. C. Its material. D. Its meaning.
14. In which aspect did archaeologists disagree about the pits before the exploration?
A. The time of building them.
B. The time of finding them.
C. The way of studying them.
D. The order of numbering them.
15. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To explain the meaning of cultural relics.
B. To remember an archeologist in Sanxingdui.
C. To introduce the new discoveries in Sanxingdui.
D. To recommend Sanxingdui as a tourist destination.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
John and David had been friends since they met in college, and now they found themselves hiking through a local mountain. The noon sun shone through the forest as they walked forward, their backpacks heavy with supplies.
“How much further do you think we need to go before reaching the top?” John said. “The guy we met at the foot of the mountain probably has already made it. I think we should speed up.”
David consulted the map and said, “We should reach the top in about an hour. We’re making good progress. There’s no hurry—we shouldn’t miss the surrounding scenery.”
As they continued their journey, the landscape around them changed. The forest gradually thinned out, revealing the beauty of the surroundings. They stopped occasionally to photograph the unique flowers and trees they encountered along the way.
“Look at that!” John suddenly shouted, pointing to a pair of monkeys swinging through the trees. The animals seemed to be playing a game of chase, their movements quick and smooth. The friends took some photos of the scene and then decided to continue their journey.
Just then, they heard a distant cry for help. Both of them stopped in their tracks, listening carefully. The call came again, clearer this time. Without hesitation, John and David dropped their planned route and headed in the direction of the voice.
After about ten minutes of careful search, they found a young hiker, Michael, who turned out to be the guy they had met a few hours before.
“What happened to you, Michael? Do you need any help?” John asked.
“I hiked so fast that I hurt my ankle and couldn’t walk. I was tired and hungry… I was wondering if you could…” Michael said hesitantly.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Michael said, “You’re almost reaching the top. You shouldn’t give up because of me.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Of course we could help you,” John said firmly, pulling out his first-aid kit. David nodded in agreement and helped John wrap Michael’s ankle with care. Then John shared some of their water and energy bars with Michael. To help Michael relax, John showed him some photos. Michael was amazed by the beautiful scenery and nature’s entertainment, which he had missed while he was hiking so fast. After a short break, David and John offered to escort Michael back to the foot of the mountain so that he could receive medical treatment.
Michael said, “You’re almost reaching the top. You shouldn’t give up because of me.” David and John exchanged glances, and then John turned to Michael and asked, “Would you like to reach the top with us?” Sensing Michael’s confusion, David added that they could go up and then go down together. With the help of David and John, Michael hiked forward slowly, which allowed him to admire the impressive views. When the three hikers eventually stood on the top of the mountain and looked at each other, they felt they all found the new purpose of hiking.
