Waco Waterslide | Waco, TX Waco Waterslide, nearly a mile long, is said to be the longest lazy river in the U. S. You must buy a pass to ride the lazy river. First things first: go through the e-mails. One came from my publisher, saying my new novel would be published in two weeks. I opened the e-mail and found a link to a pre-publication review from a famous professional. I had never been so proud of, excited by, or confident in anything I’d ever written before. I read the review, taking deep breaths as I saw words like “messy” “mismatched” “saccharine (故作多情的)” and “overly sentimental”. My spirits dropped. I read and reread that review until each scathing word was stuck in my head. How could that professional find nothing worthy in a story I felt was perfect? In the following week, I started to beat myself up. Soon, I was up to my eyeballs in a quicksand of self-doubt. A few days after the novel’s official release (发行), I felt like hiding in a hole until my publisher asked if I was going to promote the book. I woke up like a dreamer. I cheered up and spent hours each week contacting hundreds of book bloggers and other reviewers. I wrote personal messages, respectfully asking them to read the novel and share their honest thoughts and opinions online. The more I promoted, the larger my readership grew and so did my popularity. My confidence came back bit by bit, and the pain of that first review by the professional gradually disappeared as more reviews poured in — mostly favorable ones. That one simple change in mindset (心态) removed my discouragement and enabled me to believe in myself so I could share my story with the world. By doing so, the novel finally reached those who were meant to find it, those who appreciated what I was trying to say. 4. What was the author’s original reaction when he received the publisher’s e-mail? A. He was uncertain about the publication. B. He immediately started promoting the novel. C. He turned to a professional for help. D. He was filled with pride and confidence. 5. What does the underlined word “scathing” probably mean? A. Responsible. B. Boring. C. Inspiring. D. Sharp. 6. How did the author regain confidence? A. By personally reaching out for honest comments. B. By waiting anxiously for readers to discover the book. C. By depending heavily on the publisher’s marketing team. D. By completely ignoring the unfavorable reviews online. 7. What can we infer from the author’s experience? A. Teamwork is the key to success. B. Professional reviews play an important role. C. A positive attitude leads to a different result. D. Popularity is what matters most to a writer. C Recently, a video of four snow leopards climbing snowy cliffs (峭壁) in northern Pakistan made environmentalists very excited. Snow leopards are one kind of animals that are hard to find in the wild. Seeing just one on camera is difficult, let alone four at a time. This sighting is seen as a big win for Pakistan’s efforts to protect wildlife. Sakhawat Ali, a park worker who loves taking photos, filmed the snow leopards. He spent two weeks following their footprints in the Central Karakoram National Park, which is always covered in snow. It turned out that the four snow leopards were a mother and her three babies. Ali said that while people in his village often saw snow leopards, no one had ever seen four together before. He first saw the mother leopard. Then, he noticed more pawprints around. Later, from the roof of his house, he used binoculars (双筒望远镜) to look at a nearby cliff and was lucky enough to see all four leopards together. He quickly got his camera and filmed them from about 200 meters away. People in Ali’s village were happy about the sighting. However, they were also a bit worried that the leopards might attack their farm animals. Snow leopards are considered “vulnerable”, which means they are at risk of becoming endangered. They only live in high-altitude (海拔) mountains in the Himalayas, so they are seldom seen. The World Wildlife Fund in Pakistan said the sighting is a good sign, but snow leopards are still in danger. Snow leopards face many threats, like losing their homes and not having enough food. According to the United Nations, human activities and more livestock are harming the land where snow leopards live. This makes it harder for them to find food. Other problems include people hunting them illegally, new building projects destroying their habitats, and climate change making the situation worse. Given the terrible situation, it’s necessary that local communities work together to protect these amazing animals. Only in this way will future generations be able to see snow leopards in the wild. 8. Why did the sighting of four snow leopards excite environmentalists? A. It was a signal that the local climate was improving. B. It was unusual that snow leopards appeared in a group. C. It proved that snow leopards were no longer endangered. D. It indicated that snow leopards could adapt to new habitats. 9. How did Sakhawat Ali manage to film the snow leopards? A. By asking his neighbors for help. B. By tracking and observing them carefully. C. By waiting patiently near the cliff for long. D. By using advanced technology to search the mountains. 10. What is the villagers’ attitude towards the sighting? A. Mixed. B. Proud. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. 11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph? A. To describe the challenges for animals. B. To show human activities’ influence on wildlife. C. To call for collective efforts to protect snow leopards. D. To tell about the great adaptability of snow leopards. D When you think of a robot, you might picture something with a lot of sensors(传感器), and inflexible metal arms controlled by a computer. But scientists at the AMOLF Institute have created a robot that has no brain and no sensors. It carries its own battery-powered pump (泵). And yet this robot can “walk” by itself. How is this possible? The team behind the robot says the secret is in the science of how air moves. If you’ve ever seen a “tube (管子) dancer” walking around, then you’ve seen the science that makes this robot work. Tube dancers are tall thin tubes of cloth, through which air is pumped. High pressure from the pumped air fills the tube, making it stand up. Similarly, the pressure caused by the flow of air is exactly what drives the robot. When the air starts to flow in the tubes, the tubes move in different ways. But very quickly, all of these “legs” start to move in exactly the same way, making the robot walk. The robot’s speed is controlled by the air pressure. There are several notable things about the robot. The first is its speed. The robot can cover a distance equal to thirty times the length of its body in a second. That would be like the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, running the 100-meter race in 1.71 seconds. The robot also adjusts smoothly to its conditions. It can go over uneven ground. If it runs into a wall, it naturally turns. Perhaps the most surprising is the fact that if the robot is dropped into water, it begins moving in a new way that allows it to swim. As there’s no brain, the scientists say their new invention is really just a machine. But it’s a machine that can do several complicated (复杂的) tasks that would normally require lots of very difficult programming for a robot. So far the robot can conduct most of the tasks with ease. The researchers say that in the future they hope to develop new ways to control the robot and perhaps give it more skills. 12. Why is the tube dancer mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To make the robot’s working principle easy to understand. B. To introduce another impressive invention. C. To present the inspiration for the robot. D. To stress the robot’s uniqueness. 13. What enables the robot to move forward? A. The human operator. B. The computer-controlled system. C. The air pressure. D. The combination of batteries and sensors. 14. What can we learn about the robot from the text? A. It requires complicated programming. B. It may have more functions added in the future. C. It can beat Bolt in running. D. It features a higher intelligence level than other robots. 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. The Science of Air Pressure. B. The Development of Robots. C. Sensor-Free Robot Challenges Traditional Views. D. Robots Are Faced with Energy-Saving Requirement. Self-discipline (自律) is difficult to master because it can be discouraging when you have the best of intentions but tend to fall short of what you set out to do. Each one was special in its own way — the smooth china pigs that caught the light just right, the glass ones that shone like morning dew in the sunlight...They weren’t just decorations; they were my little treasures that made me smile whenever I looked at them. My favorite was a tiny china pig wearing a ballet dress. But something has changed over the years. What started as my personal joy became everyone else’s easy gift idea. Birthdays, Christmases, and even random Tuesdays — suddenly every gift I received had something to do with pigs. “You love pigs, right?” my friends would say while handing me yet another pig-shaped salt shaker or pig-printed socks. My shelves became crowded with gifts I would have never chosen for myself. The worst was a pink pig night light that made scary patterns on my bedroom walls. “You did say you liked pigs,” my cousin reminded me when I hesitated before accepting a particularly ugly pig figurine with cross-eyes. I forced a smile, but inside I wanted to cry. My special collection had turned into a burden (负担), a mountain of responsibilities instead of happiness. One rainy afternoon, I saw the cross-eyed pig figurine while cleaning my bookshelf. At that moment, I was suddenly caught by anger — at my cousin, at the endless stream of thoughtless gifts,at myself for never saying “enough”. I took the figurine in one hand and marched outside, ready to throw it away. But my hand stopped in mid-air. Was I really going to throw away a piece of someone’s effort? That’s when an idea hit me: the community’s yearly fundraiser (募捐活动) for the Children’s Home was coming up. Standing in the rain with the ugly pig figurine in my hand, I realized throwing it away wouldn’t solve anything. Instead, I decided to give it — and all the other unwanted pig gifts — a new life. I called the Children’s Home and suggested turning my collection into fundraiser items. With the director’s positive (肯定的) response, I began working on the pigs. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ At the fundraiser, I held my breath as children approached. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2024—2025学年(下)高一年级摸底考试 英语 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 How much is the shirt? D 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“I had never been so proud of, excited by, or confident in anything I’d ever written before.(我从未对自己写过的任何东西感到如此骄傲、兴奋和自信)”可知,作者收到出版商的邮件时充满了骄傲和自信。 根据第二段中“I read the review, taking deep breaths as I saw words like “messy” “mismatched” “saccharine (故作多情的)” and “overly sentimental”. I read and reread that review until each scathing word was stuck in my head.(当我看到“杂乱无章”“不匹配”“过于多愁善感”这样的词时,我深吸一口气读完了评论。我一遍又一遍地读那篇评论,直到每一个scathing词汇都在我的脑海里挥之不去)”可知,作者看到的评论都是负面的,因此“scathing”的意思应该是“尖锐的,严厉的”,与“Sharp”意思相近。故选D。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“I cheered up and spent hours each week contacting hundreds of book bloggers and other reviewers. I wrote personal messages, respectfully asking them to read the novel and share their honest thoughts and opinions online.(我振作起来,每周花几个小时联系数百名图书博主和其他评论家。我写了私人信息,恭敬地请他们阅读这本小说,并在网上分享他们真实的想法和意见)”可知,作者通过亲自寻求诚实的评论来重拾信心。故选A。 根据最后一段中“That one simple change in mindset (心态) removed my discouragement and enabled me to believe in myself so I could share my story with the world.(心态上的这一简单改变消除了我的沮丧,让我相信自己,这样我就可以和世界分享我的故事)”可知,作者通过积极的心态面对负面评论,最终取得了成功,因此可以推断出积极的态度会导致不同的结果。故选C。 C Recently, a video of four snow leopards climbing snowy cliffs (峭壁) in northern Pakistan made environmentalists very excited. B 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段中“Snow leopards are one kind of animals that are hard to find in the wild. Seeing just one on camera is difficult, let alone four at a time. This sighting is seen as a big win for Pakistan’s efforts to protect wildlife.(雪豹是一种在野外很难找到的动物。在镜头里看到一只都很难,更别说一次看到四只了。这次发现被视为巴基斯坦在保护野生动物方面取得的一大胜利)”可知,雪豹很难在野外发现,一次发现四只雪豹是不寻常的,所以这让环保主义者很兴奋。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“He spent two weeks following their footprints in the Central Karakoram National Park, which is always covered in snow.(他在常年被雪覆盖的中央喀喇昆仑国家公园里花了两个星期追踪它们的脚印)”以及“Later, from the roof of his house, he used binoculars (双筒望远镜) to look at a nearby cliff and was lucky enough to see all four leopards together.(后来,他从自家的屋顶上用双筒望远镜观察附近的一处悬崖,很幸运地看到了四只雪豹在一起)”可知,Sakhawat Ali通过仔细追踪和观察雪豹,成功地拍摄到了它们。 根据第三段“People in Ali’s village were happy about the sighting. However, they were also a bit worried that the leopards might attack their farm animals.(阿里村子里的人们对这次发现感到高兴。然而,他们也有点担心豹子会攻击他们的家畜)”可知,村民们对这次发现既高兴又担心,态度是复杂的。故选A。 根据最后一段中“Given the terrible situation, it’s necessary that local communities work together to protect these amazing animals. Only in this way will future generations be able to see snow leopards in the wild.(鉴于目前严峻形势,当地社区有必要共同努力保护这些神奇的动物。只有这样,子孙后代才能在野外看到雪豹)”并结合最后一段的结构可知,最后一段先阐述了雪豹面临的诸多威胁,接着强调当地社区需要共同努力保护雪豹,使后代能够在野外看见雪豹,由此可见作者写最后一段的目的是呼吁大家共同努力保护雪豹。故选C。 D When you think of a robot, you might picture something with a lot of sensors(传感器), and inflexible metal arms controlled by a computer. So far, the robot can conduct most of the tasks with ease. A 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“If you’ve ever seen a “tube (管子) dancer” walking around, then you’ve seen the science that makes this robot work.(如果你曾经见过“管舞者”四处走动,那么你就见过让这个机器人工作的科学原理)”可知,此处提到管舞者是为了让读者更容易理解机器人的工作原理。故选A。 根据第三段中“Similarly, the pressure caused by the flow of air is exactly what drives the robot.(同样,空气流动产生的压力正是驱动机器人的动力)”可知,是气压让机器人能够向前移动。 根据最后一段中“The researchers say that in the future they hope to develop new ways to control the robot and perhaps give it more skills.(研究人员表示,他们希望在未来开发新的方法来控制机器人,并可能赋予它更多的技能)”可知,未来机器人可能会增加更多功能。 根据第一段中“But scientists at the AMOLF Institute have created a robot that has no brain and no sensors. It carries its own battery-powered pump (泵). And yet this robot can ‘walk’ by itself.(但AMOLF研究所的科学家们发明了一种没有大脑和传感器的机器人。 Self-discipline (自律) is difficult to master because it can be discouraging when you have the best of intentions but tend to fall short of what you set out to do. Applying 39. who 40. amazingly 41. the 42. to turn 43. has been celebrated 44. for 45. included 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填who。 故填the。 故填to turn。 故填has been celebrated。 故填for。 空处构成with的复合结构:with+宾语+宾语补足语,此处culture, health and the deep human-nature connection和动词include之间是被动关系,所以空处需用过去分词included作宾语补足语。 Dear friends, ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear friends, It’s a great honor to share my labor experience with you. Last summer, I took part in a community gardening project. Together with other volunteers, I learned how to dig the soil, sow seeds and water the vegetables. Though my hands got dirty and I was tired, watching the plants grow into tasty vegetables filled me with pride. This experience taught me that labor is not just physical work but a bridge to growth. It develops patience and responsibility — qualities hard to gain from textbooks. Moreover, working alongside others strengthened my teamwork skills. As we embrace labor, we not only develop practical abilities but also understand the true meaning of “No pains,no gains.” 词汇积累 荣幸:honor → privilege    参加:take part in → participate in 劳累的:tired → worn out 获得:gain → obtain/attain 2. As we embrace labor, we not only develop practical abilities but also understand the true meaning of “No pains,no gains.” As we embrace labor, not only do we develop practical abilities but also we understand the true meaning of “No pains,no gains.” 1】Though my hands got dirty and I was tired, watching the plants grow into tasty vegetables filled me with pride. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 With the director’s positive (肯定的) response, I began working on the pigs. That night, I collected all the unwanted pig gifts. Each evening after work, I worked on them with paint and creativity, while my family helped make tiny costumes from worn clothes and the most imaginative decorations. The cross-eyed pig became “Professor Piglet ” wearing tiny glasses made of wire. The scary night light got a galaxy makeover with glow-in-the-dark paint. Even the pig socks were repurposed as creative plant holders. On the eve of the fundraiser, my “Piggy Wonderland” featured 23 transformed pigs, each with a story card. At the fundraiser, I held my breath as children approached. My worry turned out to be unnecessary. The children’s eyes widened with pleasure as they discovered each transformed pig. “Look! A space pig!” one boy shouted, grabbing the galaxy nightlight. A shy girl gently picked up Professor Piglet, whispering how it reminded her of her favorite teacher. Within an hour, all the 23 pigs found new owners, raising enough money to buy books and toys for the Children’s Home. As I watched the children leave happily with their new treasures, I’ve realized what is my burden can become someone else’s joy and that true happiness doesn’t come from keeping things, but from sharing them with others. 词汇激活 行为类 ①开始着手处理:begin working on/start dealing with/set about doing ②收集:collect/gather/assemble ③帮忙:help/assist/give a hand ④低语:whisper/murmur 情绪类词汇: ① 担心:worry/anxiety/concern ② 快乐:pleasure/joy/delight 【点睛】【高分句型1】The children’s eyes widened with pleasure as they discovered each transformed pig.
