When I was a child, our family had one of the first telephones in the neighborhood. It was attached to the wall in the hallway and had a polished oak case. The shiny receiver hung beside the box, and I remembered our phone number — 105. I was too small to reach the phone, but I loved listening to my mother talking on it. Once, she even lifted me up to speak to my father, who was away on a business trip. It felt like magic.
Soon, I discovered that there was a magical voice inside the phone — called “Information Please”. She seemed to know everything. If my mother needed a phone number or the time, she would simply ask the operator. She was always there to provide helpful answers. I was fascinated by her knowledge and kindness.
One day, when my mother was visiting a neighbor, I hurt my finger while playing in the basement. I was alone and couldn’t find anyone to help. In pain and with no one to comfort me, I ran upstairs to the phone and, standing on a bench, picked up the receiver. “Information Please,” I said. The familiar voice responded kindly, asking if I was hurt badly. She advised me to put some ice on my finger to stop the pain. I felt comforted, knowing there was someone I could turn to for help.
Years passed, and I moved to a different city. The magical “Information Please” disappeared with time. But when I was older, on a trip back to my hometown, I dialed the number to hear that voice again. However, it wasn’t the same. The service had been replaced by an automated (自动化的) system. I realized, as I hung up, that the voice I had once depended on was gone, but I had grown to be independent in ways I hadn’t expected.

5. How did “Information Please” help the author when he hurt his finger?
A. She sent someone to look after him. B. She told him to seek medical help.
C. She immediately contacted his mother. D. She suggested a method on pain relief.
6. Why did the author feel comforted by “Information Please”?
A. Because she treated his wound at once.
B. Because her voice sounded warmer than Mom’s.
C. Because she made a timely response to his need.
D. Because her behavior reminded him of his mother.
7. What does the author convey in the last paragraph?

When visiting a doctor a few years from now, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be displayed onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis (诊断). It also opens the door for medicines and procedures designed specifically for you, increasing recovery rates.
No matter how unreal this might seem, the researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) already use computer simulations (模拟) of the hearts of patients to test different treatments for a heart disorder. It would be far too dangerous to experiment this way on someone’s real heart.
Digital twins are starting to be seen everywhere, monitoring the health of jet engines on airliners and helping carmakers spend fewer years on the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being fueled by recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI), which gives twins the ability to make predictions about their physical counterparts (对应的事物), and adjust themselves on new information.
Digital twins began as basic computer models of physical objects and systems and have become more advanced with computers becoming more powerful. Complex design and modeling software make it possible for many physical objects to take shape in the virtual world. Small sensors feed twins with real-time data, ensuring that they mirror their physical counterparts.
Digital twins make it easier for humans to solve challenging problems, allowing people to have a look into the future, spotting problems before they materialize and testing wild ideas without real-world result. For businesses, this should mean better designs and operations. For society, the promise is equally appealing: personalized health care, and clues as to how the planet might avoid environmental catastrophe.
Could these virtual twins go out of control? They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Digital twins will take in mountains of data, some of it wrong and much of it raising concerns about privacy. Yet these risks are not specific to digital twins. They apply to all new technologies, as they always have and always will. The appearance of the digital mirror world will undoubtedly raise new questions, but its potential advantages are already easy to see.
12. Which of the following best describes a digital twin?
A. A toy model. B. A video game.
C. A virtual copy. D. A medical database.
13. Why do researchers at QMULuse computer simulations of hearts?
A. To reduce the cost of the operation.
B. To use real hearts more conveniently.
C. To help increase patients’ recovery rates.
D. To avoid the risk of experimenting on real hearts.
14. How does AI contribute to the development of digital twins?
A. It creates the basic computer models of physical systems.
B. It offers the ability to forecast and adjust based on new data.
C. It enables the perfect simulation of all physical objects.
D. It solves the complex problems in the real-world application.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the digital twins?
A. Cautious. B. Doubtful.
C. Optimistic. D. Critical.

How To Befriend Like-Minded People
One of the best ways to improve your social life is to find like-minded people. But the process of finding them becomes useless if you can’t befriend them at all. ____16____.
Introduce yourself properly. Practice introducing yourself before you go out to meet new people. That first impression matters in this case. ____17____. Simply tell them it’s nice to meet them while you shake their hands, and a smile as you do these things can help, too.
Set proper expectations. Just because you and someone else share an interest, opinion, or belief, that doesn’t mean you two will hit it off. ____18____. If things don’t go your way, simply shake it off, and move on. There are a lot of other people out there who will be more than willing to be friends with you.
____19____. When you finally meet a like-minded person, take advantage of the thing you already know you have in common. Start talking about your common interest and the like. Learn from each other. Grow and be more knowledgeable together. This foundation creates a really strong bond later on.
Exchange numbers. Once you’ve had a pleasant exchange with a like-minded person, don’t let the opportunity of a friendship go to waste. ____20____. Then, contact them afterward saying how great of a time you had interacting with them. This lets them know that you enjoyed their company and it opens up future interactions.
A. Begin exchanging knowledge
B. Here are some tips on how to do it
C. Be open-minded when it comes to learning
D. Your introduction can be very short and brief
E. It can take even longer to become friends with them
F. Be sure to exchange numbers or any other contact information
G. Don’t expect to be friends with every like-minded person you meet
B 17. D 18. G 19. A 20. F

这里考查谓语动词,主语slow-moving Qigong与become为主动关系,再根据时间状语in the past several years可知,句子应用现在完成时,主语slow-moving Qigong是不可数名词,助动词用has。故填has become。
故填which。
故填to。
故填a。

For thousands of years, it has been marked by eating zongzi and racing dragon boats in honor of Qu Yuan, an ancient poet and politician. The winner is the first team to reach the finish line. Besides, people will hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house from ancient times. We Chinese are always longing for family reunions. The crowd roared as I took off from the starting line in The Big Race. Through the cheers, I heard Mom shouting, “Run, Sammy, run!” I knew without looking that she was smiling from ear to ear and clapping her hands for me.
I kept my eyes straight ahead running as fast as I could. “Run, run, run,” I chanted to myself in my mind as I passed my friend Justin. I saw Justin’s red face out of the corner of my eye and wondered if my own face was that red too?
“Run, run, run.” I was on fire, passing Sarah, leaving her in my dust.
The coach was waiting for me at the finish line.holding the medal, for the fastest runner in kindergarten. I would wear that blue and white ribbon around my neck when we go out for ice cream to celebrate and then hang it in my room. Last night I took the collection of caps off the hook on my wall leaving it ready for my shiny new medal .I couldn’t wait to see it every day when I woke up.
Dad was there in the crowd also and would pick me up and put me on his shoulders to carry around. “My son!” He would tell the other fathers, “My son won the race!”
I was going to win! Faster than Sarah, I came up behind Mikey, giving my legs that extra burst of energy to pass him by. The winner, Sammy! All that running in the park was worth it!
Just as I heard the roar of the crowd welcoming me to the finish line,I saw a blur out of the corner of my eye. What? There was Justin with his tomato cheeks running as fast as humanly possible, huffing and puffing like he was going to blow the house down. And then he was ir front of me.I was behind tomato face Justin.Crossing the finish line,I heard the voice over the loudspeaker boom,“Congratulations to the winner,Justin!"

I stood there frozen as Justin was handed his medal. My chest tightened, and tears blurred my vision. Mom rushed over, wrapping her arms around me. “You did an amazing job, Sammy!” she whispered. Justin glanced at me, his tomato cheeks now softened into a shy smile. “You were so fast,” he said, offering a high-five. Hesitating, I slapped his hand weakly. The coach approached, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Second place is still a victory,” he said. I stared at the empty hook on my wall, imagining the medal that wouldn’t hang there. Dad stood silently nearby, his eyes filled with pride mixed with concern.
Suddenly, strong hands lifted me onto Dad’s shoulders. “Look around, champ,” he said. The crowd was cheering wildly — not just for Justin, but for every runner. “Winning isn’t about medals,” Dad continued. “It’s about pushing your limits.” From that height, I saw Sarah hugging her mom and Mikey laughing with friends. Justin waved at me, his medal glinting. I took a deep breath and clapped along with the crowd. Later, as we ate ice cream, Mom said, “Next year, that hook will be ready again.” I nodded, realizing the race had taught me something brighter than a ribbon.

4. What was the author’s first experience with the telephone?
A. He called his father with Mum’s help. B. He used it to find information.
C. He dialed his father’s number. D. He hung it in person.
A. The unchanging nature of human relationships over time.
B. The unavoidable change coming along with new technology.
C. The loss of childhood wonder and a simple view of the world.
D. The importance of having a support system during difficult times.

BEIJING—The CR450 high-speed train will be the fastest train in the world when it enters commercial service. Its two sample trains shown in Beijing on Dec 30, 2024—had a test speed of 450 kilometers per hour and an operational speed of 400 km/h.
The CR400 which is in service since 2017, has an operational speed of 350 km/h. The CR450’s speed advantage comes with a number of other improved features, such as a braking (刹车) system with a shorter response time, crucial for the safety of high-speed trains. After a series of trials and calculations, engineers have improved the CR450’s braking response time from 2.3 seconds to about 1.7 seconds.
The CR450 has carbon fiber composite materials, reducing its overall weight, which not only helps in enhancing speed but also significantly aids in energy consumption reduction. Thus, the CR450 balances technological empowerment for increased efficiency with a reduction in energy consumption.
On the foundation of raised speed, guaranteed safety and effective energy conservation, the CR450 also focuses on enhancing the passenger experience. It features built-in four-person compartments and business seats that can rotate and adjust up to 300 degrees, creating a clean and simple environment with a high level of comfort.
Li Yongheng, an official from China State Railway Group, said, “China’s high-speed rail system has evolved from being a follower to a global leader, setting new international standards.” Li added that they work together to maintain and strengthen China’s leadership in high-speed rail technology and support the country’s modernization goals.
China’s railway system, particularly the high-speed railway network, has seen rapid development over the past 15 years. By the end of 2024, China’s railway network covered 160,000 km, of which 46,000 km are high-speed railways, accounting for more than two-thirds of the world’s high-speed railways. With significant progress and major breakthroughs achieved in a short time, China ranks first globally.
8. What can we learn about the CR450?
A. Its braking response time is longer.
B. It is more environmentally friendly.
C. All the seats can rotate and adjust 300 degrees.
D. Its operational speed is 100 km/h faster than CR400.
9. Why does the author mention Li Yongheng’s statement?
A. To emphasize the high-speed rail’s economic costs.
B. To promote the technology of high-speed train.
C. To highlight China’s rise as a global rail leader.
D. To explain the CR450’s braking system design.
10 What is the last paragraph talking about?
A. China’s achievements in high-speed railway.
B. The early development history of China’s high-speed rail.
C. Measures to improve passenger comfort in high-speed trains.
D. Specific methods to reduce energy consumption in CR450.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. CR450: Speed Meets Passenger Comfort
B. CR450: Overcoming Technical Challenges
C. CR450: Setting New Global Standards for Speed
D. From CR400 to CR450: Evolution of China’s Trains
D

Congratulations to Justin?
