I played for my school and I still lead pickup soccer games on the weekends. When I study abroad, I have also found that soccer can be the common language of the world. One example of this was during the time I spent at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea. As soon as I got there, I of course went looking for someplace to play soccer. I discovered a foreign student team that plays against other departments. I decided to try out, even though I was very nervous of playing in a strange land. During our first practice, I led my team to a victory, scoring two goals. Afterward, the more experienced players approached me and said the team hadn’t been performing well lately. They needed a coach and leader. I felt honored. I love trying new things, and coaching soccer in Korea was definitely a new experience for me. However, there was a major challenge: Most players spoke Japanese or Chinese, so our common language was only Korean. Since I had just arrived in Korea, I wasn’t yet proficient(熟练的) in Korean. As a coach, I faced a language barrier with the players, making communication difficult. Unable to clearly express my expectations, I persevered, recognizing the team’s potential and knowing this experience would be beneficial. To bridge the language and attitude gaps, I designed challenging but enjoyable practice. I wanted everyone to feel part of a committed team, so we got a new team uniform to look united. I showed them offense/defense (进攻和防守)moves physically. After a few practices, the players showed commitment(坚定) and excitement, building my confidence. I especially remember the semi-final game. It was the second half, we were behind, ①and the team was starting to not believe in itself anymore. I took my last time out and with my poor Korean, gave them the best performance of my life. I showed them how wet my shirt was and all my injuries. I was a leader at the head of his team who was about to lead his group to the final struggle, I loved it. Later, I saw in their eyes that we were going to make it. After the timeout, they showed unbelievable fight and determination. One player, who had missed all his shots during the game, had a great chance to score. He hesitated, but I trusted him and shouted, “Kick the ball!” He managed to tie the score, and from that point on, we took control of the game, winning by two points in the end. Using soccer and my creativity,②我克服了语言和文化的差异。 I know there will be challenges in my MBA studies at Wharton, but I think I should be brave and confident when I have trouble with something. Apart from that, schools should also make sure students have a 30-minute break each day for exercise. “5. It is important for students to rest between classes. This can help them relax, keep healthy and avoid myopia (避免近视),” says a worker from the ministry. Many schools in Shanghai and the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou have provided colorful activities for students to fully relax during the 10-minute break. Some schools have even extended (延长) the breaks to 20 minutes. In Shenzhen, many schools are providing outdoor games and reading corners during breaks. A school even sets up two almost three-story-high slides (滑梯) to let students get to the playground faster during breaks. 回答问题: 1.Why do some schools stop their students from leaving classrooms during breaks? _____________________________________________________________________ 2. Some people think that doing homework well is the most basic thing that students should do. Homework is also an important part of learning for students. They believe it not only enables children to practice what they have learned in class, but also helps improve their handwriting. Others disagree, though. ①他们认为家庭作业给孩子们太多的压力。And the time spent on homework could have been used to do other activities like reading and playing sports. To back up their opinion, they give the example of Finland(芬兰). In Finland, students have little homework. But the country remains one of the most educationally successful countries in the world. Here is my point of view(观点)on this matter. ② Whether the homework is good or bad depends on the purpose of it. If there is no clear reason for giving homework, the students won't get anything from doing it, so it should not be set. However, I still believe that homework can really help with children’s learning, if teachers clearly tell them why they should do the homework and let them know how they have done in their homework. 1. Why do some people think that homework is important for students? 2. What activities can students use the time to do instead of doing homework? 3. It might taste good, but is that a healthy way to eat? We all like to eat those treats, desserts, and fried foods, but those were meant to be eaten sometimes, not our regular diet. Eating healthy food is part of a healthy lifestyle. In addition to getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and exercising, eating healthy food is one of the keys to staying healthy and happy! You need to start with breakfast. Don’t skip it! Cereal and milk might taste good, but it does not have enough protein (蛋白质) to keep us moving and thinking at our best when we go to school. Eggs, cheese, and meat add some great protein to our breakfast. They can keep us moving all day! Protein in the morning gives you long-lasting energy, instead of a suddenness of energy that sugar provides. Sugar just leaves you negative and tired after the primary energy rush runs out. For lunch, fruits and vegetables go great with nutritious (营养) foods from the other food groups. Fruits and vegetables give us the minerals (矿物质) and vitamins our bodies need to grow and stay healthy. If we don’t get enough of these key nutrients, we can’t keep those colds away! 2.Who wants to be sick all the time? For dinner, get a nice rounded meal from all the food groups. A piece of pizza might be tasty, but there isn’t enough nutrition there! Your stomach might be full, but your body will still be craving something else. Above all, eat a variety of foods every day. Finally, get enough sleep. Your body repairs itself, grows and fights germs (细菌) best when you are rested. It does a lot of work while you’re sleeping so that you can be at your very best and brightest! 单项选择: 1. What is one of the keys to staying healthy and happy? A. Getting less sleep. B. Even if you haven’t, you’re certain to see people running along with headphones in their ears. Lots of us love to listen to music while exercising, feeling like it helps reduce effort and increase endurance (忍耐力). (A) The interesting thing for me is not just whether music helps when exercising, but how it helps. One thing is certain — the answer lies within our brains, not the muscles (肌肉) . The signals to move the muscles start in an area of the brain called the motor cortex (运动皮层).(B)当我们计划运动时,这一区域特别活跃。 So, this special part of the brain does a very important job during exercise — deciding exactly when to act. Once you’ve realized that an important part of the sporting performance is not just how fast or how strong you can move, but the effort of deciding when to move, then you can begin to know why music might be so helpful. The rhythm (韵律) travels from our ears to the motor cortex. There it joins forces with brain activities that decide when to move, helping us keep pace. The benefits of music are the largest for self-paced (自定速度的) sports, like rowing (划船) or running, rather than un-paced sports like judo (柔道) or football. 1. Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year is celebrated all over the world. The year of the dragon starts on February 10th, 2024. Influenced by Greek legend, the dragon is often the keeper of treasure, so the dragon is often a symbol of greed (贪婪) and destruction (毁灭). 4. For Europeans, dragon is usually a monster keeping away from people, a symbol of darkness. With four legs and two huge black wings, they can spit (吐出) fire out of their mouth, with great power. But Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize strong and auspicious (吉祥的) power, strength, and good luck. They even have jobs, as in Chinese legends dragons were appointed head of the four seas where they must keep order, as well as the job of bringing rain to the earth. People born in a year of the Dragon are believed to have a confident, powerful and determined personality. During this year, people celebrate with family gathering, delicious food and colorful decorations. It’s a time of happiness and success, because everyone looks forward to the good luck that the dragon year brings. In the Japanese language, they think that Western dragon and Chinese loong are completely different. The Western idea of dragon is different from that of the Chinese dragon. If you want to express ideas about the Chinese dragon, then you should use the word “Loong”. For example: “5. 我出生在龙年” or “Happy the Year of the Loong”. 回答问题: 1. Recently, a fashion brand called JUMA showed its newest collection in Shanghai. Guess what? Eighteen pieces of clothing, like jackets, shirts, and dresses, were all made from recycled plastic bottles. Why do they do this? Well, billions of water bottles were being thrown into landfills(填埋场) and oceans every year and that these bottles take hundreds of years to decompose(分解). JUMA thought, “Why not use them to make clothes and help the environment?” Alia Juma, the company’s design director, shared this idea. Many other fashion companies are also finding ways to protect our planet. The process is simple: first, the plastic bottles are cleaned and cut into small pieces. Then, they are melted and shaped into small balls, which are melted again to make thread. This thread can be used to make different clothes. Did you know that it takes 67,000 bottles to make 1 ton of thread? This reduces carbon emissions(排放物) and water use compared to making thread the usual way. Just imagine, four bottles can make a pillowcase(枕套), five a shirt, ten a dress, and twenty a short coat! Some people might have doubt about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. However, clothes made from recycled plastics could be better than nylon and polyester(聚酯纤维). They can have different textures(质感), like cotton or silk. “There’s a lot we can do with this fabric(面料),” says Juma. The price for these clothes ranges from 500 to 3,000 yuan. But as more companies start using recycled materials, prices may go down. It’s a step towards a more sustainable(可持续的) future for fashion! 单项选择: 1. Rice is already one of the most nutritious(有营养的) foods available in nature, but thanks to some scientific ‘magic’, it could soon become an alternative (替代品) to meat. A team of researchers at the Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, successfully created a rice hybrid with beef protein and fat cells. The new pink rice has 8 percent more protein and 7 percent more fat than regular rice. And while it doesn’t yet taste like beef, it does carry an uncommon blend of smells like meat actually. “Imagine getting all the nutrients we need from the protein rice,”said Park So-hyeon, co-author of the study published in the scientific magazine--- Matter. ① Rice already has a high nutrient level, but adding cells from cows can get more. The hybrid grains are more firm and brittle than normal grains, and when cooked they retain their traditional appearance. While the rice doesn’t really taste like beef yet, it offers a pleasant and new flavor experience, and pairs well with different dishes. For their first experiments, scientists used cells from hanwoo cattle slaughtered (宰杀) at the local farm, but in the future, they plan to use sustainable supplies of cells that can be maintained in the lab. ② They are also exploring the possibility of the rice with other types of meat or fish for different tastes. For now, the percentage of protein in the hybrid rice is still low. To actually replace (代替) meat, researchers would need to increase protein content a lot. 阅读选择: 1. Students have 10-minute breaks between classes. 4. 在这个时间,他们可以锻炼、互相交 谈和放松。However, to keep students safe, some schools stop their students from leaving classrooms during breaks — unless they need to go to the bathroom. Ding Ding is a student from a middle school in Beijing. He and his classmates can go out to the bathroom, get a drink of water, or play in the classroom as long as they don’t run or make noise during breaks. “School life has become really hard,” Ding Ding says. “Sometimes we even don’t have time to go to the bathroom.” Since years ago, the Ministry of Education (教育部) has asked schools to make sure students 6 have 10-minute breaks between classes. 1. The signals to move the muscles start in an area of the brain called the motor cortex (运动皮层).(B)当我们 计划运动时,这一区域特别活跃。 So, this special part of the brain does a very important job during exercise — deciding exactly when to act. JUMA 27 thought, “Why not use them to make clothes and help the environment?” Alia Juma, the company’s design director, shared this idea.
