Unexpected heavy rain hit the Sahara in September,2024.It caused floods and left large areas of
water in the desert.
The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert. It covers nearly all of northern Africa. The desert does
experience rain, but it's usually just a few inches()a year.It also seldom happens in late summer.
Over two days in September, however,a low-pressure system pushed across the northwestern Sahara.
Heavy rain then fell in parts of the desert in southeast Morocco.
Several parts of the country received a year's worth of rain in two days.In a village called
Tagounite,more than 100 millimeters of rainfall()was recorded in a 24-hour period.Satellite
imagery()showed that Lake Iriqui was full afterwards.Local people said the lake had been dry
for a long time.
"It's been 30 to 50 years since we last had this much rain in such a short space of time,"said
Houssine Youabeb.He works in Morocco's meteorology(气象学)agency.
This kind of rain is called an extratropical storm.Experts said it may change the weather conditions
in the region in the coming months and years. This is because the air holds more tiny drops of water after
the rainfall. The wetter air will cause more evaporation().According to scientists, similar storms
could happen in the Sahara in the future.
Drought()has been a problem in many parts of Morocco.Farmers are forced to leave their
fields and communities are limited in their water use. This rainfall may help refill the underground
aquifers(地下含水层)in the region. It is very important to life in these desert areas..However,the long-
term impact on the drought remains uncertain.
()1.According to the text, the Sahara's rainfall is usually
A.high
B.low
C.just right
D.very strange
()2.What does the underlined word "impact"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Chance.
B.Study.
C.Influence.
D.Problem.
()3.What can we infer from the text?
A.The heavy rain may bring local people a lot of problems.
B.The heavy rain may last in the coming months and years.
C.The heavy rain may be of certain benefit to these desert areas.
D.The heavy rain may make these desert areas full of rain

Mystery in the Neighborhood
Last week, something strange happened in a
neighborhood in my city. Many people in the
neighborhood always found that there was something
like fruit, vegetables and snacks hanging on the wall
of the lift for people to eat.
People didn't know who did that. Some people
guessed it might be someone in this neighborhood or
a volunteer of a group.
In order to find out the truth, the guard checked
the monitor. He saw a man hang some apples. The
man explained that he bought too many apples, and
he didn't want to waste them.So he shared some
with others.People now know what was happening
in the neighborhood.Everyone feels warm and
begins to share delicious food in the lift.
