Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form.
Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new Al method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the Al system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions.
The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven algorithm to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers — led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind — said they developed an Al system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.
21. Which can be used for cross-cultural communication?
A. Tool to interpret pig emotions. B. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation.
C. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease. D. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings.
22. Who will most probably be interested in Ithaca?
A. A farmer. B. A doctor. C. A botanist. D. An archeologist.
23. What do the inventions have in common?
A. They focus on health issues. B. They are developed by Facebook.
C. They aim to promote productivity. D. They are AI-driven technology tools.

An English mother Liz Pinfield-Wells, has recycled more than 2,600 pounds (1,200 kg) of trash (垃圾) through a DIY recycling center in her garden shed (棚) in Dawley Shropshire. Pinfield-Wells established the recycling center after the birth of her third child when she discovered that her town’s roadside recycling program did not accept certain items.
The recycling center accepts 30 different categories of recyclable waste. Pin field-Wells encouraged the public to leave their mixed recycled items at the end of her driveway, and dozens of residents have since dropped off their trash in her shed. She has even accepted Pringles tubes, which have metal and plastic components and should not be placed in the roadside bin. “Setting up the recycling drop-off center, in my front garden has hopefully helped the community to recycle more. It can sometimes seem a little difficult knowing where to start but with every small step, it gets that little bit easier,” she said.
Every month, she sends the collected items in vacuum-packed (真空包装的) bags to TerraCycle, a firm that turns the waste into small plastic balls for use in other products, such as watering cans and benches. The weight of the trash is then changed into points for money, which can be paid out twice a year to a charity or sports organization of her choice.
In the last three years, Pinfield-Wells has raised more than £1,000, which she has donated to her 14-year-old daughter Zoe’s gymnastic group to buy new equipment. She has also donated money to another local charity to buy woodchips for their community garden.
Pinfield-Wells hopes that her recycling center will raise awareness about the importance of recycling and encourage others to take small steps to reduce their carbon footprint. She has created a Facebook group for here eco-center recycling shed, which now has over 1,000 members.
24. What inspired Liz to start the program?
A. Overloading trash. B. Her preference for DIY practice.
C Her children’s encouragement. D. Limitation of local trash service.
25. What does TerraCycle do?
A. It develops plastic tubes.
B. It produces vacuum-packed bags.
C. It processes waste into small plastic balls.
D. It supplies woodchips for community gardens.
26. What is Liz’s expectation of her center?
A. It will get new equipment. B. It will boost community economy.
C. It will replace the local trash service. D. It will motivate more people to take action.
27. Which of the following best describes Liz Pinfield-Wells?
A. Ambitious and intelligent. B. Responsible and thoughtful.
C. Adventurous and determined. D. Pioneering and humble.

Could the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen be a well-engineered AI software program? It’s a question becoming increasingly pressing as machine language-learning software continues to evolve.
Much of this is just nerves. Today’s AI creative writing programs are not yet at a stage of development where they pose a serious threat to Colleen Hoover or Charles Dickens. But while attention continues to focus on the possibility of a blanket takeover of human literature by AI, far less consideration has been given to the prospect of AI co-working with humans.
Earlier this month, American sci-fi writer Ken Liu, who had been awarded Hugo and Nebula to his name, joined 12 other professional authors for a writing workshop on Google’s Wordcraft. This AI tool, a language generating model, is not yet publicly available but is advertised as an AI-powered writing assistant that can, when given the right instruction from the writer, provide helpful descriptions, create lists of objects or emotional states, and even brainstorm ideas.
The writers at the workshop, however, emerged with mixed reports. “Wordcraft is too sensible. Wow!” Robin Sloan wrote. “But ‘sensible’ is another word for predictable, overused and boring. My intention here is to produce something unexpected.”
I’m unconvinced that writers awarded the Nobel Prize have much to fear from AI. Their work, and that of countless other novelists, short story writers, dramatists and poets, is too particular, too beautifully unique. Even if a model learned what they had done in the past, it would not be able to predict where their creativity might take them in the future. But for authors who write following a pattern, AI might step in, first as assistants before some day to authorship.
Production-line novels are nothing new. In the 1970s, Barbara Cartland, who wrote more than 723 books in her lifetime, many of which are romance bestsellers, would read her novels for her secretary to type up at the remarkable rate of roughly seven chapters a week. But already machine has replaced the secretary’s role. Perhaps creative writing software isn’t that far from replacing the Mrs. Cartlands of today.
28. Which aspect of AI calls for more attention?
A. Its damage to our nerves.
B. Its progress in literary studies.
C. Its cooperation with humans.
D. Its influence on human literature.
29. What can we learn about Wordcraft from the text?
A. It generates novels automatically.
B. It outperforms professional writers.
C. Its works receive praises from the public.
D. Its works bear similarity to existing ones.
30. What can writers do to avoid the threat from AI?
A. Increase writing speed.
B. Use diverse resources.
C. Produce creative works.
D. Follow the latest patterns.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Will AI Replace Human Writers?
B. AI Warns Mrs. Cartlands of Today
C. Is Writing Running into a New Era?
D. Word craft Lies at the Center of Debate

Madagascar, the world’s second-largest island country located off Africa’s eastern coast, is an island of diverse ecosystems and a biodiversity hotspot. The country has unique wildlife, with 90% of its plants and animals found nowhere else. Madagascar’s wildlife creates some of the country’s most beautiful scenery and popular spots. One of its conspicuous landscapes, attracting tourists from almost all corners of the Earth, is the Avenue of the Baobabs in the Menabe region. This avenue is made up of numerous baobab trees along the dirt road linking Belon’i Tsiribihina and Morondava, creating a unique and beautiful setting.
Baobab trees are common throughout Madagascar. Of the Earth’s eight species, six are native to the country. Some of the baobabs in the country are about 2, 800 years old, with trunks rising to 150 feet. The avenue is a row of about 25 baobabs stretching about 260 meters. Other baobab trees are also found in the nearby pastures (牧草地). This road is one of Madagascar’s most visited places. It is also the most accessible place to see some of Africa’s oldest baobabs. These trees were once part of a forest that was made up of other plants. However, massive deforestation cleared the area of most trees, leaving the baobabs to grow alone.
The baobab trees along the road and the other species growing in the nearby areas are always under constant threat from the increasing population. The trees also face threats from polluted water from the nearby fields, forest fires, and bushfires. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of the Baobabs has no admission fee or visitor center and generates little money for local communities.
Thankfully, non-governmental organizations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. The Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Forests declared it a temporary protected area in July 2007. In July 2015, the site was declared a national monument (国家保护区), the first in Madagascar. The government and local communities hope the trees can survive for additional 800 years.
32. What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in the first paragraph mean?
A. New. B. Cultural. C. Striking. D. Changing.
33. What do we know about the Avenue of the Baobabs?
A. It is a big forest. B. It has eight baobab species.
C. It consists of many different plants. D. It has Africa’s oldest baobabs.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The risk to local baobab trees.
B. Natural disasters in Madagascar.
C. Poor living conditions in Madagascar.
D. The quality customer service of the avenue.
35. What kind of feeling is expressed in the last paragraph?
A. Curiosity. B. Caution. C. Hopefulness. D. Sympathy.

An English mother, Liz Pinfield-Wells, has recycled more than 2,600 pounds (1,200 kg) of trash (垃圾) through a DIY recycling center in her garden shed (棚) in Dawley Shropshire.
C. Her children’s encouragement.

【答案】28. C 29. D 30. C 31. A
【解析】

【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“Their work, and that of countless other novelists, short story writers, dramatists and poets, is too particular, too beautifully unique. Even if a model learned what they had done in the past, it would not be able to predict where their creativity might take them in the future.(他们的作品,以及无数其他小说家、短篇小说作家、剧作家和诗人的作品,都太过独特,太过美好。即使一个模型了解了他们过去的行为,它也无法预测他们的创造力在未来会把他们带到哪里。)”可知,作家们可以通过创作有创意的作品来避免人工智能的威胁,故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Could the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen be a well-engineered AI software program? It’s a question becoming increasingly pressing as machine language-learning software continues to evolve.(下一个Ernest Hemingway或Jane Austen会是一个精心设计的人工智能软件程序吗?随着机器语言学习软件的不断发展,这个问题变得越来越紧迫。)”和第二段的“Much of this is just nerves. Today’s AI creative writing programs are not yet at a stage of development where they pose a serious threat to Colleen Hoover or Charles Dickens.(这在很大程度上只是神经紧张。今天的人工智能创意写作程序还没有发展到对Colleen Hoover或Charles Dickens构成严重威胁的阶段。)”可知,本文主要探讨的是人工智能是否会取代人类的作家,因此最好的题目是A选项“Will AI Replace Human Writers?(人工智能会取代人类作家吗?)”,故选A。

C Poor living conditions in Madagascar.
D. The quality customer service of the avenue.
35. What kind of feeling is expressed in the last paragraph?
A. Curiosity. B. Caution. C. Hopefulness. D. Sympathy.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. C
