Today, we are going to continue our exploration of Unit 5 The Value of Money. As we all know, in this unit, we have been looking at the story of Henry Adams and his extraordinary experience with a million - pound bank note. So far, we have read about how Henry got the bank note and his initial encounters in London. Now, we are going to watch a video clip from the film adaptation of The Million Pound Bank Note. This will give us a more vivid picture of the story and help us understand the characters and their attitudes towards money better. Are you ready? S: Yes! II. Pre - watching T: Before we watch the video, let's take a look at some important information. First, I want you to look at the characters listed on the board. We have the bellboy, the manager, the tailor, the police officer, the maid, the waiter/waitress, the doorman, the driver, the secretary, and the chef. I want you to predict which of these characters will appear in the film clip we are about to watch. You can discuss with your partners for a minute. (Students discuss) T: Okay, time's up. Who wants to share their predictions? S1: I think the doorman and the manager will appear because usually in a hotel scene, they are the main people in charge. T: Good prediction. What about others? S2: Maybe the waiter or waitress will be there to serve the guests. T: That's very likely. Now, let's look at this question. I'll give you three options about what this scene might be about. Option A: Henry Adams lost his bank note at the hotel. Option B: Henry Adams fell in love with Portia at the hotel. Option C: Henry Adams received a warm reception at the hotel. Take a moment to think and choose the best answer. (Students think and choose) T: Alright, let's see what you've chosen. Hands up for Option A. (Some students raise their hands) Option B. (A few students raise their hands) Option C. (Most students raise their hands) Well, we'll soon find out if your choices are correct when we watch the video. III. While - watching T: Now, let's watch the video carefully. Pay attention to the plot, the characters' actions, and their conversations. Try to figure out who is who and what is happening in the story. (Play the video) T: Okay, the video has ended. Let's check the answers to the questions we had before watching. First, let's see which characters actually appeared in the clip. Who can tell me? S3: The doorman, the manager, and a man who was mistaken for Henry Adams appeared. T: Exactly. Now, let's check the answer to the second question. What was this scene mainly about? S4: Henry Adams received a warm reception at the hotel, but actually, they mistook another man for him at first. T: Very good. Now, let's put these events in the correct order. On the board, I have five statements: The real Henry Adams appears. Henry makes friends with the man. The doorman thinks the man is Henry, and so he invites him inside. A man appears wearing a hat. The hotel manager realises he has made a mistake. I want you to arrange them in the order they happened in the video. Discuss with your partners again. (Students discuss) T: Alright, who wants to come to the board and write the correct order? S5: (Comes to the board and writes 4, 3, 5, 1, 2) T: Let's see if this is correct. (Checks with the video) Well done! This is the right order. Now, let's answer some detailed questions about the video. First, why do the people at the hotel mistake the man for Henry Adams? S6: Because the only thing they know about Henry is that he is supposed to be a rich American but might dress strangely. And this man who came to the hotel looked poor, and he got out of what seemed like an expensive horse - drawn cab, so they thought he was Henry. T: Excellent answer. Next question, the man seems odd to the hotel workers. Why are they so nice to him? S7: They think he is Henry, a very rich customer. They want to get good tips or gain some benefits from serving a wealthy person. T: Great. Now, how do the hotel workers treat the man when they discover that he is not Henry? S8: They treat him rudely. As soon as they realise he is not the rich man they thought he was, they lose their patience and respect for him. T: Right. And what does the man do for a job? S9: He is a strong man in the circus. T: Correct. Finally, why does Henry want to make friends with the man? S10: Henry is new in London and feels lonely. The man is the only person so far who has not treated him strangely because of the money. He seems kind and funny, so Henry wants to be friends with him. IV. Post - watching discussion T: Now, let's have a deeper discussion. First, why do people treat Henry and the man differently at the hotel? Discuss this in groups of four. (Students discuss) T: Okay, let's hear from each group. Group 1, would you like to start? Group 1 spokesperson: People often show favouritism to the wealthy. They think that if they are nice to rich people like Henry, they might get some financial advantages, like good tips or business opportunities. But when they realise the man is not rich, they treat him badly because they don't think they can get anything from him. T: Very good analysis. Group 2? Group 2 spokesperson: Also, people assume that wealthy people are more important and have better qualities. So they are eager to please Henry. But for the poor - looking man, they don't think he is worthy of their respect until they think he is rich. T: That's a great point. Now, the second discussion question. Do you think “money makes the world go around”? Why or why not? This is a bit more philosophical. Take your time to think and then share your opinions. S11: I think to some extent, money makes the world go around. People need money to buy food, shelter, and other necessities. In the story, we can see that with the million - pound bank note, Henry could get almost everything he wanted. T: That's a valid point. What about the opposite view? S12: I don't think money makes the world go around. There are many things that money can't buy, like true friendship and love. In the video, Henry finally made friends with the circus man, not because of money, but because they connected on a human level. T: Excellent. Money is important, but it's not the only thing that matters in life. V. Conclusion T: Today, through watching this video clip from The Million Pound Bank Note, we have a better understanding of how people's attitudes can change based on money. We also discussed the role of money in our lives. Remember, money is a tool, but it should not be the master of our lives. For our homework, I want you to write a short essay about your view on the quote “money makes the world go around”. You can use the ideas we discussed in class and add your own thoughts. That's all for today's class. See you next time! S: Goodbye, teacher! 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
