When I was complaining about working on such a beautiful festival, a pale woman and four small children showed up at my desk. “Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously because they seemed all right. “Yes,” the woman answered in a low voice and lowered her head. But when it comes to their problems, things got a little strange. Two of the children had headaches, but they didn’t hold the head. Two children had earaches, but neither of them could tell me which ear was in pain. The mother complained of a cough, but she seemed to be pretending. Something was wrong. I didn’t say anything but explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” the mother answered. I checked their charts-no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless and the hospital was warm. I looked out at the family, sitting together under the Christmas tree, smiling and chatting with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them that they had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses’ station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses came into action, just as we did when there was a real medical emergency. But this one was a “Christmas emergency.” We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. Usually we just tried to meet the physical needs of our patients. But today, we worked hard to exceed the needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas Day. Later, when the family was leaving, the four-year-old girl ran back and gave me a kiss. “Thanks for being our angel today,” she whispered in my ear. 37. Answer the questions (根据短文内容, 回答下列问题): 7%(最后一题2%) Weighing too much can damage your health, and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world. Sleep might be one answer to the problem. A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds. Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weighing more, but scientists have had a hard time deciding “which came first, the chicken or the egg,” says Julie C. Lumeng of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In other words, it hasn’t been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. Both scenarios (情境) seemed equally possible. To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and colleagues interviewed the parents of 800 third graders from around the United States. The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year. Three years later, the parents answered the same questions. By sixth grade, about 18 percent of kids interviewed in the study were overweight. The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students’ race or gender. It also didn’t matter how strict their parents were, or whether they were boys or girls. Obesity struck all of these groups equally. Instead, sleep seemed to be the key factor. Over the 3 years of the study, the children averaged a healthy 9.5 hours of sleep a night. Some kids, however, slept a lot more--or less--than others. For the sixth graders, every hour of sleep above the 9.5-hour average was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being overweight. Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders. Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40 percent drop in obesity by sixth grade. “I expected we would find that this (sleep link with obesity) was just a bunch of bunk,” says Lumeng, a pediatrician (儿科医师). But their findings were believable. No matter how her team looked at the link, “we couldn’t make it go away.”— Emily Sohn. 54. According to the passage, is sleeping a growing problem for both children and adults? ______________________________________________ . 55. What does “Which came first, the chicken or the egg,” mean in the passage? It means that scientists can’t decide __________________________. 56. Why did Lumeng and her colleagues interview the parents of 800 third graders from the whole nation? _______________________________________________ 57. There was no relationship between weight and the students’ race or gender, was there? _______________________________________________ 58. According to paragraph 6, how can children lower the risk of being overweight? _______________________________________________ 59. What does the phrase “a bunch of bunk” in the last paragraph probably mean, a lie or a truth? How do you know that? ________________________________________________ 【答案】54. No, it isn’t. 55. whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. 56. They interviewed the parents to better understand whether lack of sleep causes weight gain or if being overweight causes sleep problems. 57. No, there wasn’t. 58. By sleeping more. 59. A lie. Because Lumeng expected it to be untrue but the findings were believable. 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述了儿童睡眠不足可能导致肥胖,研究表明多睡可降低超重风险。 【54题详解】 根据第一段“obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world”可知,对于世界各地的儿童和成人来说,肥胖是一个日益严重的问题,而不是睡眠。故填No, it isn’t. 【55题详解】 根据第二段“In other words, it hasn’t been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain.”可知,科学家们还不清楚是体重太重的孩子睡眠有问题,还是睡眠不足导致体重增加。故填whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. 【56题详解】 根据第三段“To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and colleagues interviewed the parents of 800 third graders from around the United States.”可知,为了更好地了解是什么原因导致了什么,梦露和他的同事采访了美国800名三年级学生的家长。故填They interviewed the parents to better understand whether lack of sleep causes weight gain or if being overweight causes sleep problems. 【57题详解】 根据第四段“The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students’ race or gender.”可知,科学家发现体重和学生的种族或性别之间没有关系。故填No, there wasn’t. 【58题详解】 根据第六段“every hour of sleep above the 9.5-hour average was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being overweight”可知,每超过9.5小时的平均睡眠时间,超重的风险就会降低20%。故填By sleeping more. 【59题详解】 根据最后一段“I expected we would find that this (sleep link with obesity) was just a bunch of bunk...But their findings were believable. No matter how her team looked at the link, ‘we couldn’t make it go away.’”可知,他们的发现是可信的。所以a bunch of bunk意为“胡说八道,不可信的”。故填A lie. It was always quiet in the emergency room on this day, so I was not expecting any patients. 37. 54.
