He is busy in a shipping container, not sailing but planting. Ethan, an agricultural instructor in Central Wyoming College (CWC), became interested in agriculture at a young age. Growing up in Wyoming, which has 80 food deserts across 21 counties, he saw residents in his neighbourhood struggling to access fresh produce. “I have always been involved with agriculture and education. I wanted to find an opportunity that would put together all of my skills to solve the pressing issue of Wyoming,” says Ethan. He, together with a group of students from CWC, takes agricultural innovation to the next level — by transforming a standard 8-by-40-foot shipping container into a climate-controlled greenhouse. The greenhouse is a fully operational vertical (垂直) growing system. From the get-go, the container is recycled. The former shipping container is now given a new lease of life as a food-growing station. Inside the repurposed container, four sliding walls with 88 growing panels housing five growth channels each, are growing hundreds of plants vertically. A fully automated (自动的) computer system is looking after every plant’s needs, deciding when it’s time to turn on the bright LED sunshine each day, as well as delivering the right amount of water. The setup allows students to grow delicious vegetables and herbs, with the entire system designed for minimal energy usage and maximum plant output. It even operates mainly at night to capitalize on off-peak electricity rates, a wise decision that saves money. “Now we are able to offer fresh vegetables to locals year-round,” says Ethan. “The project also enriches the students’ experience.” A CWC student, Lexi Torres, speaks to shipping company Container Lift, “This project is about empowering next-generation growers to put real-world challenges like climate change and food shortage into studies. We’re learning how to feed people with fewer resources. That’s the future.” 4. Why did Ethan repurpose a shipping container? A. To reduce food deserts. B. To achieve childhood dream. C. To lessen regional poverty. D. To promote modern agriculture. 5. Which of the following best describe the Greenhouse? A. Durable and flexible. B. Futuristic and fancy. C. Fruitful and painstaking. D. Eco-friendly and high-tech. 6. What key factor is considered for night operation of the greenhouse? A. Output. B. Cost. C. Function. D. Effectiveness. 7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Ethan brought agricultural problems under the spotlight. B. Ethan replaced traditional farming with vertical farming. C. The project has solved environmental matters in the area. D. The project plants seeds that go far beyond the greenhouse. C The grass and vegetables that rabbits eat are rich in dietary fiber, so they need to chew (咀嚼) the food thoroughly with their teeth. When chewing, their teeth rub against each other and gradually wear down, so rabbits need to keep growing their teeth throughout their lives. Previously, researchers had assumed that wild rabbits intentionally ate calcium-rich (含钙丰富的) foods such as leafy vegetables to maintain tooth growth. However, a Swiss-Finnish research team pointed out that this assumption overlooked the fact that rabbits take in food along with the tooth powder that is rubbed off when they chew. They suggested that the rabbit’s own tooth powder could be absorbed, providing a lasting source of calcium outside of food. To investigate whether rabbit teeth are a source of calcium, the team conducted a two-week feeding experiment in which eight female rabbits were given food containing either a standard calcium supplement or ground-up rabbit teeth. The rabbits’ droppings were analyzed. The results showed that rabbits who ate a standard calcium supplement absorbed 20 percent of the calcium they ate, whereas rabbits who ate the tooth powder absorbed 33percent of the calcium. Generally, food given to pet rabbits intentionally contains calcium to support the growth of their teeth. However, this study suggests that rabbits can reabsorb calcium from their own teeth, so humans may be giving rabbits too much calcium. Healthy rabbits can discharge extra calcium in their urine (尿), but if they have kidney problems, extra calcium can cause illness. Urinary diseases are common in pet rabbits, so it’s important to keep an eye on their calcium intake. Further research is needed to find out just how much calcium rabbits need to maintain tooth growth and whether the powder-eating circle is sufficient for this. “This is an interesting piece of the puzzle about one of nature’s great inventions” said Dr. Jean-Michel Hutt, a professor at the University of Zurich. “We will continue to study tooth wear and regeneration.” 8. What happens to rabbits when they chew high-fiber food? A. Tooth deformation. B. Tooth wear. C. Tooth weakness. D. Tooth ache. 9. What does the new research focus on? A. The habits of rabbits. B. The droppings of rabbits. C. Food intake for rabbits. D. Calcium sources for rabbits. 10. What do the researchers suggest regarding raising rabbits? A. Removing urine and droppings timely. B. Conducting disease screening regularly. C. Not offering overmuch calcium in diets. D. Not ignoring the daily cleaning of teeth. 11 What is Dr. Hutt’s attitude to the new research? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent. D You know when you see someone yawn (打哈欠), and suddenly, you find yourself yawning seconds later. It’s possible that, just like a yawn, stress works similarly. Think about how many times you’ve felt stressed out when a family member, or coworker around you was exhibiting symptoms of stress. This phenomenon, known as secondhand anxiety, has been on the rise, particularly in our hyper-connected world. To truly comprehend secondhand anxiety, we need to look into the neurological (神经学的) basis of empathy and emotional contagion (传染). Our brains are wired for social connection and empathy, which allows us to understand and share the feelings of others. When we observe someone experiencing stress or anxiety, our brains voluntarily begin to mirror their emotional state. This process is driven by mirror neurons, specialized brain cells that fire both when we perform an action and when we observe someone else performing the same action. Our family, close relationships and workplace environments are all significant sources of secondhand anxiety. However, in the digital age, social media and online interactions have become major contributors. Constant exposure to deliberately designed films of others’ lives, as well as the rapid spread of false news can lead to feelings of failure, fear, and anxiety. Sometimes, this shared emotional experience is a positive thing— it allows us to connect on a deeper level with those we care about. But when someone’s anxious energy begins to disturb your peace of mind, this empathy can turn poisonous. Fortunately, there are several strategies we can employ to manage and prevent secondhand anxiety. One of the most important steps is setting limits. If you feel the person is starting to take a toll on you, you can “take strategic escapes”. For example, start your phone calls with a breath and calmly say “I’m so busy.” Learn to say no to taking on others’ problems. Of course, it’s not just other people’s stress that matters— our own mindset affects the happiness of those around us. A positive mindset can improve our own lives, and the lives of everyone around us. 12 Why does the author refer to “yawn” at the beginning? A. To describe an interesting scene. B. To introduce a similar phenomenon. C. To present the state of teenagers. D. To show side effects caused by stress. 13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The activity of brain in easing anxiety. B. The symptoms of secondhand anxiety. C. The science behind secondhand anxiety. D. The role of brain in regulating our body. 14. What does the underlined phrase “take a toll on” in the last paragraph mean? A. Have a bad effect on. B. Tell a white lie to. C. Make threats against. D. Take advantage of. 15. Which of the following can be a suitable title? A. Emotional Contagion: Can We Get Secondhand Mood? B. Mental Disorder: The Stress You Suffer from Hard Work. C. Stress Management: How to Cope with Stress in Our Lives? D. Secondhand Anxiety: Hidden Impacts of Stress on Our Lives. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The blank page can be one of the most awful parts of writing. Today was her Pre-Preliminary Ice Skating Test: her chance to show she had mastered the skills to pass Level One. At breakfast, she pushed aside the fried eggs and toast her mom had put in front of her. Her stomach was doing double jumps. “I’ll never pass,” Suli said. “Nonsense, honey,” her mom replied. “Didn’t you already pass six levels of basic skills?” “Yes, but today is in front of real judges,” she sighed. “And on testing days, there is no music!” “I watched you practice all the other days,” her mom smiled. “Be confident, honey. Just remember if you skate by heart, music follows.” Taking a deep breath, she recalled her training: At the ice rink (滑冰场), she skated forward, changed feet and tried to glide (滑行) as long as possible. Every move was replayed in her mind like a movie. When Suli’s mom dropped her off at the rink, Suli found her coach, Toni. His warm smile made her feel better briefly. Later, Suli followed Toni to the edge of the rink. Her hands trembled as she took off her skate guards and skated to the center of the rink. “My name is Suli,” Suli said, her voice cracking. Suli faced the judges sitting on a platform off the ice. Nobody smiled. “Go ahead, Suli,” one judge said. The rink was so quiet. Suli could hear her heart pounding like a circus drum (马戏团鼓). The greenhouse is a fully operational vertical (垂直的) growing system. 【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. “This is an interesting piece of the puzzle about one of nature’s great inventions,” said Dr. 11. What is Dr. Hutt’s attitude to the new research? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent. 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. Urinary diseases are common in pet rabbits, so it’s important to keep an eye on their calcium intake.(然而,这项研究表明兔子能够从自身的牙齿中重新吸收钙质,所以人类可能给兔子补充了过多的钙。 根据最后一段““This is an interesting piece of the puzzle about one of nature’s great inventions,” said Dr. Jean-Michel Hutt, a professor at the University of Zurich. “We will continue to study tooth wear and regeneration.”(“这对于我们理解自然界的一项重大发明而言,是一段颇具意义的探索内容,”苏黎世大学的教授让-米歇尔·胡特博士说道。“我们将继续研究牙齿的磨损与再生现象。”)”可推知,赫特博士对这项新研究持积极态度。故选A。 D You know when you see someone yawn (打哈欠), and suddenly, you find yourself yawning seconds later. 12. Why does the author refer to “yawn” at the beginning? 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. How could she calm down? 注意: (1)写作词数应为100个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Mom’s words just flashed through Suli’s mind. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One judge announced, “Suli, you passed!” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Mom’s words just flashed through Suli’s mind. “If you skate by heart, music follows.” Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and imagined the rhythm. As she pushed off, her muscles remembered every practiced move. The silence faded — she heard an inner melody guiding her glides and turns. Judges’ stern faces blurred as Suli lost herself in the flow, her skates tracing perfect arcs on the ice. One judge announced, “Suli, you passed!” Her knees wobbled with relief. Toni clapped wildly, and her mom’s tearful smile shone from the stands. The other judges nodded approvingly — her confident edges and steady spirals had impressed them. Racing to hug her coach, Suli realized: the truest music wasn’t in the rink, but in the courage to trust herself. 词汇激活 行为类 ①想象:imagine/picture ②摇晃:wobble/rock ③拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 ①疯狂地:wildly/like crazy ②自信的:confident/assured 【点睛】[高分句型1]As she pushed off, her muscles remembered every practiced move.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型2]Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and imagined the rhythm.(运用了现在分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
