What can you do with nuts? A scientist named George Washington Carver answered that question, over and over again. We owe thanks to him for more than 300 products.
When Carver was born in 1864,he was a slave on a farm in Missouri. Later,as a teenager and a freedman,he worked on a farm and managed to put himself through high school. At age 30,he became the first black student at his college in Iowa. In 1896,he became the first black teacher to be hired at another college in Iowa. Several years later,he took a job at a college in Alabama, where he worked until his death in 1943.
Carver studied agriculture, the science of farming. His research made huge improvements in farming in the southern United States. In particular,Carver studied peanuts. He knew that the South could not grow only cotton. Planting cotton year after year wore out soil and made it useless. Carver learned that if farmers planted cotton one year and peanuts the next, the soil remained healthy.
To encourage this practice,Carver came up with new uses for the peanut. Would you like to try peanut and prune ice cream? How about lotion or shampoo made from peanuts? Perhaps you would prefer to make paint from peanuts,or maybe you would like to bake with peanut flour. Glue? Paper? Rubber? The list goes on and on. He also came up with similar uses for pecans and other nuts.
Carver did not profit from most of his inventions. He didn't feel that it was right to sell his ideas. Rather,he gave them freely to help farmers and fellow scientists. Carver's life is one that we could all use as an example.
5.What is this article mainly about?
A.Carver's work with peanuts.
B.Carver and his family.
C.Carver's fight to get an education.
D.Carver's achievements as a scientist.
6.What can we know from the article?
A.Carver was a slave in Alabama when he was a child.
B.Planting cotton every year makes the soil poor.
C.Carver sold his ideas in order to help farmers.
D.Carver used to work in the college where he graduated from.
7.According to the article, which is not mentioned as a product made from peanuts?
A.Paper B.Flour
C.Ice cream D.Cotton
8.Based on the article,it seems that the author ________ Carver.
A.dislikes B.admires
C.ignores D.hates

Before在……之前;After 在……之后;During在……期间;In在…… 根据后文“the listeners started to ask questions.”
2.C [句意:有个女孩起身问:“你被誉为科学巨人,你认为你是巨人吗?”cut in插嘴,插入;showed off炫耀;got up 起立,起床;lay down躺下。
根据“A giant is a person who is...in height.”

根据后文“Any peak can be reached”可知,任何顶峰我们都能到达。

C.Carver's fight to get an education.

A.dislikes B.admires
