情态动词有can (could), may (might), must, have to, shall (should), will (would), dare (dared), need (needed), ought to等。
1.can,could
Can you lift this heavy box?(体力)
Mary can speak three languages.(知识)
Can you skate?(技能)
此时可用be able to代替。
I'll not be able to come this afternoon.
He was able to go to the party yesterday evening in spite of the heavy rain.
-Can I go now?
-Yes, you can. / No, you can't.
-Could I come to see you tomorrow?
-Yes, you can.( No, I'm afraid not.)
They've changed the timetable, so we can go by bus instead.
This hall can hold 500 people at least.
Can this be true?
This can't be done by him.
How can this be true?

-Might/ May I smoke in this room?
-No, you mustn't.
-May/Might I take this book out of the room?
-Yes, you can.(No, you can't / mustn't.)
用May I...?
May you succeed!
He may /might be very busy now.
Your mother may /might not know the truth.
3.must, have to
You must come in time.
-Must we hand in our exercise books today?
-Yes, you must.
-No, you don't have to / you needn't.
The play isn't interesting, I really must go now.
I had to work when I was your age.
You're Tom's good friend, so you must know what he likes best.
Your mother must be waiting for you now.
4.dare, need
How dare you say I'm unfair?
He daren't speak English before such a crowd, dare he?
If we dared not go there that day, we couldn't get the beautiful flowers.

You needn't come so early.
-Need I finish the work today?
-Yes, you must. / No, you needn't.
I dare to swim across this river.
He doesn't dare (to) answer.
He needs to finish his homework today.
5.shall, should
(1)shall
What shall we do this evening?
You shall fail if you don't work hard.(警告)
He shall have the book when I finish it.(允诺)
He shall be punished.(威胁)
6.should, ought to
(1)should, ought to表示“应该”,ought to表示义务或责任,比should语气重。

Earthquakes always happen suddenly, so it is difficult to warn people about them. Usually people have little or no idea about what to do in an earthquake, so here is some advice. When you are in the high buildings, don't jump out of them. When the ground stops shaking, leave the building as quickly as you can. When you are outside, don't stand under street lights or power lines. I think you must stay away from bridges and trees. If you are in a car, you'd better stay in it. You should be brave and help save other people.
A
Earthquakes happen without warning(前兆). They can happen at any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don't worry because most earthquakes are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it's important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.
Do NOT go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines(输电线).
Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.
Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building, and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.
Also keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself on the fire.
If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it's safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don't drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.

B
Earthquakes are something that people are afraid of. There are some places that have few or no earthquakes. But many places in the world have them frequently (频繁地). Countries that have a lot of earthquakes are usually quite mountainous.
The strongest earthquakes are not always those that kill the most people. In 1964, a strong earthquake happened in Alaska and it was the strongest in North America. Although the earthquake brought terrible damage (损害) to this area, luckily, only 130 people died in it. Because most people realized the danger before the ground started to shake, they hid themselves in a safe place.
The most talkedabout earthquake in the United States was in San Francisco in 1906. With the earthquake, the fires broke out and they came so quickly that over 700 people were killed.
However,_according_to_the_reports,_some_other_terrible_earthquakes_are_not_as_strong_as_the_two_above,_but_they_caused_more_deaths. For example, in 1923, a strong earthquake happened in the Tokyo and Yokohama area of Japan, which caused 140,000 deaths. And one of the worst earthquakes was in China in 2008, in which over 69,000 people were killed and over 370,000 were hurt. It was one of the worst natural disasters (灾难) in recent Chinese history.
People worry a lot about earthquakes. The reason is that people do not know when earthquakes are coming. Luckily, with the development of technology, people have now improved their ability to prepare more for earthquakes, so they are able to protect themselves better.
6.What can we learn from Paragraph One?
A.People needn't fear earthquakes now.
B.Earthquakes just happen in mountains.
C.Earthquakes have something to do with the forms of land.
根据“There are some places that have few or no earthquakes. But many places in the world have them frequently (频繁地). Countries that have a lot of earthquakes are usually quite mountainous.”
7.Among the examples in the passage, the earthquake which caused the most deaths happened in ________ in ________ .
A.1906;San Francisco
B.1923;Japan
C.2008;China
根据“For example, in 1923, a strong earthquake happened in the Tokyo and Yokohama area of Japan, which caused 140,000 deaths.”
8.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The stronger the earthquake is, the more people are killed.
B.The fires caused by earthquakes in San Francisco killed many people.
C.People can keep themselves safe in earthquakes by hiding in safe places.
根据“The strongest earthquakes are not always those that kill the most people.” 故选A。]
9.The underlined sentence in Paragraph Four is used for ________ .
A.leading into Paragraph Four
B.introducing the happening of the two earthquakes above
C.listing the number of the deaths in the terrible earthquakes
根据“However, according to the reports, some other terrible earthquakes are not as strong as the two above, but they caused more deaths.” 故选A。]
10.What may be talked about in the Paragraph to follow Paragraph Five?
A.How do earthquakes worry people?
B.What will people do to prepare for earthquakes?
C.How can we save people when earthquakes happen?
请你以“How to keep safe when an earthquake happens?”

2.may, might
-Might/ May I smoke in this room?
在肯定句中一般用must, have to, ought to, should代替。
You needn't come so early.
-Need I finish the work today?
-Yes, you must. / No, you needn't.
I dare to swim across this river.
He doesn't dare (to) answer.
He needs to finish his homework today.
5.shall, should
(1)shall
What shall we do this evening?
You shall fail if you don't work hard.(警告)
He shall have the book when I finish it.(允诺)
He shall be punished.(威胁)
6.should, ought to
(1)should, ought to表示“应该”,ought to表示义务或责任,比should语气重。
I should help her because she is in trouble.
You ought to take care of the baby.
should, ought to可通用,但在疑问句中常用should。
You should / ought to go to class right away.
Should I open the window?
should, ought to (客观推测), must(主观推测)。
He must be home by now.(断定他已到家)

Earthquakes always happen suddenly, so it is difficult to warn people about them. Usually people have little or no idea about what to do in an earthquake, so here is some advice. When you are in the high buildings, don't jump out of them. When the ground stops shaking, leave the building as quickly as you can. When you are outside, don't stand under street lights or power lines. I think you must stay away from bridges and trees. If you are in a car, you'd better stay in it. You should be brave and help save other people.
$$
A
Earthquakes happen without warning(前兆).
