When you hear the word “birthmark”, you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s different — I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I’m used to being asked, “What are those black marks on your lips?” When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, “That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks.
In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before their personality.
My birthmarks are caused by a genetic(基因的) condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.
My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.
Inspired by my cousin, I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, “They’re beauty marks” and smile without pursing my lips.
4. How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks?
A. She felt excited to show her difference.
B. She felt annoyed to give others an answer.
C. She was scared to be made fun of by people.
D. She was bored to be faced with the question.
5. Who has the similar birthmarks like the author?
A. Her mother. B. Her grandmother.
C. Her cousin. D. Her uncle.
6. What can be inferred about the author’s cousin?
A. She dislikes talking about her birthmark.
B She never judges others by their looks.
C. She is more confident than the author.
D. She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.
7. What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Brilliant. B. Apparent.
C. Harmful. D. Impressive.
C
The artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT can offer everything from answers to basic general knowledge questions, to writing essays and poems. Ask ChatGPT to write about the history of the French Revolution or Battles of Hastings, and it will provide a perfect essay in less than a second. It's such a powerful tool openly accessible to any student for free. However, AI-based plagiarism (抄 袭) or so called “AIgiarism” is fast taking off across student populations internationally, ringing alarm bells in schools and universities around the world
The developers OpenAI have since decided to prevent the misuse of its technology. The company is developing a system, water marks, for identifying those who cheat by submitting essays written by ChatGPT. By using the system which changes certain works into a recognizable pattern, the machine written text could be identified by anyone looking for the signs. These changes would not be noticeable to the reader. The researchers say that by setting up this kind of security system, it could prevent the technology from being misused for whatever reason. Such measures will also prevent an overdependence on the tool, which still has a long way to go before improving its accuracy, due to the fact that it collects the information from all over the internet. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said in a statement that it would be a mistake to depend on it for anything important at this stage.
Schools also in turn have tried to take matters into their own hands, with many across Europe and the US updating their policies to warn of punishments for those who are caught using the program improperly.
Other schools have limited internet network access to ChatGPT on campus. Examiners have the sense to identify essays written by ChatGPT by a lack of emotion or personal experiences in them. This ability is a human advantage—AI will struggle to copy.
8. Why does the author mention French Revolution and Battles of Hastings?
A. To explain what they are. B. To introduce the history of France.
C. To show the power of ChatGPT. D. To make a comparison between them.
9. What can we learn about the system mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. It will make ChatGPT helpless for people.
B. It will probably prevent an overdependence on ChatGPT.
C. The readers are worried about the system's future.
D. It has successfully recognized essays written by ChatGPT.
10. What can we know about AI according to the last paragraph?
A. AI is able to match humans.
B. AI has no ability.
C. AI has an advantage over humans.
D. There is something that AI can't copy from humans.
11. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Actions Against the Misuse of ChatGPT
B. ChatGPT Is Forbidden
C. All the Systems of OpenAI
D. ChatGPT—A Powerful Tool
D
Blind people have long desired for brightness, but scientists don’t have the technology. To bring that one step closer to reality, Zhiyong Fan, a materials scientist of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, developed a new artificial eye recently. The device, which is about as sensitive to light and has sharper vision and a faster reaction time than a real eyeball, may outperform human eyes.
The human eye owes its wide field of view and clear eyesight to the retina (视网膜) — an area at the back of the eyeball covered in light-detecting cells. The design for a new artificial eye is based on the structure of the human eye and uses a friendly light-sensitive material. At the back of the eyeball, an artificial retina is lined with Nan scale light sensors Those sensors measure light that passes through the lens (晶状体) at the front of the eye. Wires attached to the back of the retina send signals from those sensors to the processor, similar to the way nerve networks connect the eyeball to the brain.
“In the future, we can use this to replace damaged human eyes,” says the lead designer. In theory, this artificial eye could see more clearly than the human eye, because the artificial retina contains about 460 million light sensors per square centimeter while a real retina has about 10 million light-detecting cells per square centimeter. Besides, the artificial eyeball records changes in lighting faster than human eyes can — within about 30 to 40 milliseconds, rather than 40 to 150 milliseconds. Although its 100-degree field of view isn’t as broad as the150 degrees a human eye can take in, the device can see as well as the human eye in poor light.
Hongrui Jiang, an electrical engineer at the University of Wisconsin, though, thinks engineers need a much more practical and efficient way to produce vast series of tiny wires on the back of the artificial eyeball to give it superhuman sight, which is super hard to achieve.
12. Why does Zhiyong Fan develop the artificial eye?
A. To replace people’s real eyeballs. B. To gain a sharper vision.
C. To help the blind regain their eyesight. D. To help normal eyes perform better.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A The design of the artificial eye. B. The structure of the human eye.
C. The advantages of the artificial eye. D. The material used for the artificial eye.
14. What can we learn about the artificial eye and the human eye?
A. They have the same structure.
B. The artificial eye may see more clearly.
C. The human eye sees better in weak light.
D. The artificial eye takes in a broader view.
15. Which word best describes Hongrui Jiang’s attitude to the artificial eye?
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Unconcerned. D. Satisfied.

Top studying tips
If you frequently find yourself stuck in low efficiency though you spend a lot of time learning, the following strategies might be of great help to you.
Study in cycles
In the 1950s, the famous sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman discovered the Sleep Cycle._____16_____We actually fall in and out of deep sleep several times every night. If we decide to use an alarm to force ourselves awake before a cycle completes itself, we will wake up feeling extremely tired. What does this have to do with studying? Well, it turns out these cycles don't only happen while we are a sleep. We go through periods of increasing and decreasing focus and energy all day. _____17_____Theoretically (理论上) we should be able to get a better session (时段).This also means it's best to work in 90-minute period because after that our focus starts to decline.
Relax purposefully
Simply put, after every cycle where you decide to focus hard on something, you need to take a break and allow your mind to relax.____18____After you complete a hard set at the gym where you pushed your body to the limit, you need to wait a few minutes to regain your strength. The same thing applies to our mind. We need to spend 10 to 30 minutes of relaxing after a focus cycle, giving our brain a break.____19____.
____20____
If you feel like you are someone who is unable to focus even during the best 90-minute cycles throughout the day, some expert suggests practicing a simple mindfulness meditation (冥想) technique. Studies have found that doing this form of meditation for at least 13 minutes per session can sharply improve your ability to focus after just a few months.
A. Improve focus at times.
B. This is similar to working out.
C. Practice meditation per session.
D. If we keep a balance between study session and sleep cycle,
E. It turns out that our bodies go through 90 to 110 minute cycles while we sleep.
F. If we don't, chances are that our next session won't be as productive as we'd like.
G. So if we can time a study session with one of these cycles with our awareness increasing.

He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, wanting to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country” The man again shook his head, a confused expression appeared over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in difficult situation.

B. She never judges others by their looks.
C. She is more confident than the author.
D. She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.
7. What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean?
A Brilliant. B. Apparent.
C. Harmful. D. Impressive.
D 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据第二段中的“In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them”(在照片中,我常常撅起嘴巴来掩饰我的胎记。
根据第一段中的“For me, it’s different-I have them on my lips and inside my mouth”(对于我而言,这是不同的-我嘴唇上和嘴巴里面都有胎记。)
依据第四段中的“My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance”(我表姐也面临同样的挑战。
根据画线词后面的“suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often...she wouldn’t be such a person as she is”(建议她应该多穿长袖......

C 9. B 10. D 11. A

At the back of the eyeball an artificial retina is lined with Nan scale light sensors Those sensors measure light that passes through the lens (晶状体) at the front of the eye.
A. The design of the artificial eye.

分析句子结构可知,句中已有谓语动词are collected,此处需用非谓语动词表目的,所以用动词不定式to feed,“to feed clothe, and house the city’s poor”意为“为了给……提供食物、衣物和住所”。故填to feed。
故填a。
故填that/which。
故填for。
故填them。

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be first to wish a happy New Year to his family.

At the same time, Edward saw a bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled back at the father, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly.
Paragraph 2:
When Edward went home his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. Then he told the story to his father. “I have bought no books,” said he, “I can wait for my books till next New Year.” “My dear boy,” said his father, “here are a dozen of books. I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift.” It was on that very moment that Edward realized a small act of kindness may be powerful enough to make a huge difference.
