T: Good morning, class! Today, we are going to start a new unit in our English textbook. Look at the title of Unit 2, "Morals and Virtues". Can anyone tell me what "morals" and "virtues" mean in Chinese? Yes, the boy in the first row.
S1: “Morals” means 道德,and “virtues” means 美德.
T: Very good! So, what comes to your mind when you hear the words “morals and virtues”? Let’s have a quick brainstorm. Raise your hands and share your ideas.
S2: Honesty is a virtue.
S3: Helping others is a moral act.
S4: Being brave in the face of difficulties shows virtue.
T: Great! You all have wonderful ideas. Morals and virtues are indeed important in our lives. They guide our actions and shape who we are. Now, let’s look at the reading part of this unit. The title of the passage is “Mother of Ten Thousand Babies”. From this title, what kind of story do you think it might be? Discuss with your partners for a minute.

T: Time’s up. Who wants to share their prediction? The girl in the corner.
S5: I think it might be a story about a woman who has helped a lot of babies, maybe a doctor.
T: That’s a very reasonable prediction. Now, let’s quickly identify the genre of this article. Look at the text, does it seem like an exposition (说明文), a narration (记叙文), or an argumentation (议论文)?
S6: I think it’s a narration because it seems like it will tell a story.
T: Exactly! It’s a narrative text, and more specifically, it’s a biography. Biographies tell the life stories of people. So, in this passage, we are going to learn about the life of a remarkable woman. Now, let’s skim through the text quickly and try to find out who this “Mother of Ten Thousand Babies” is. You have two minutes.

T: Alright, have you found out who she is?
Ss: Lin Qiaozhi!
T: Correct. Lin Qiaozhi. Let’s learn more about her life step by step. First, let’s focus on her early life. Read the first two paragraphs carefully and find out some important events in her childhood and youth. Then, fill in the blanks on the handout I gave you. The blanks are about her age and the corresponding events. You have three minutes.

(Students read and fill in the blanks)
T: Time is up. Let’s check the answers together. When Lin Qiaozhi was five years old, what happened?
S7: Her mother died.
T: Right. And this deeply affected her. Then, at the age of 18, what decision did she make?
S8: She chose to study medicine instead of following the traditional path of marriage like most girls.
T: Good. Her brother was against her decision, right? What did her brother say?
S9: Her brother complained that girls should find a good husband as their final goal and thought about the high tuition fees.
T: And how did Lin Qiaozhi respond?
S10: She said she’d rather stay single to study all her life.
T: Very good. From these early events, we can already see that Lin Qiaozhi was a determined and independent woman. Now, let’s move on to her education and career development. Read the third paragraph carefully and answer the following questions on the screen.
深入阅读,探究教育与职业发展
(The questions on the screen are: When did Lin Qiaozhi graduate from Peking Union Medical College? What prize did she get? What positions did she hold in the hospital?)
(Students read and answer)
T: Okay, let’s start with the first question. When did Lin Qiaozhi graduate from Peking Union Medical College?
S11: Eight years after she started studying, so in 1929.
T: Correct. And what prize did she receive?
S12: The Wenhai Scholarship, the highest prize given to graduates.
T: Good. Now, what positions did she hold in the hospital?
S13: She became the first woman ever to be hired as a resident physician in the OB - GYN department of the PUMC Hospital. And within six months, she was named a chief resident physician.
T: Excellent. Notice that becoming a chief resident physician usually takes four years, but she achieved it in six months. What does this show about her?
S14: She must be very capable and hard - working.
T: Exactly. After that, she was sent to study in Europe and then the US. What happened when she was in the US?
S15: Her American colleagues were greatly impressed by her and invited her to stay, but she rejected the offer.
T: Why do you think she rejected the offer? Discuss with your partner.

(Students discuss)
T: Time to share your ideas. The group in the middle.
S16: We think she rejected the offer because she wanted to come back and serve the women and children in China.
T: That’s a very good point. It shows her love for her country and her sense of responsibility. Now, let’s look at the later part of her life, during and after the war. Read the fourth and fifth paragraphs and summarize what she did.
(Students read and summarize)
T: Who wants to share their summary? The girl with glasses.
S17: In 1941, she became the first Chinese woman to be appointed director of the OB - GYN department of the PUMC Hospital, but then the department was closed due to the war. So, she opened a private clinic. She charged low fees and often reduced costs for poor patients. After the new People’s Republic of China was founded, she played a key role. She was elected to the first National People’s Congress and held many important positions, but she was more interested in treating patients, publishing medical research, and training the next generation of doctors.
T: Perfect summary. Now, let’s focus on some language points in these paragraphs. Look at the sentence “The new People’s Republic of China saw Dr Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role.” What does “saw” mean here? Is it the same as the verb “see” which means to use our eyes to perceive something?
S18: No, it means “witnessed” or “experienced”.
T: Right. It’s a special usage. We often use this structure “时间 / 地点 + see + sb. + doing sth.” to mean that during that time or in that place, a certain event happened. For example, “The year 2020 saw many challenges around the world.” Now, let’s move on to another sentence. “She was more interested in tending patients, publishing medical research on care for women and children, and training the next generation of doctors.” Here, “tend” means “take care of”. Can you use “tend” in a sentence?
S19: My mother tends to my little brother when he is sick.
T: Great sentence. Now, let’s think about Lin Qiaozhi’s contributions. What kind of contributions did she make to the field of medicine and to society? Discuss in groups of four and list them on the paper.
总结人物贡献,小组汇报
(Students discuss and list)
T: Time to report. Group 1, please.
S20: She made great contributions in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. She delivered over 50,000 babies in her lifetime, so she was called the “mother of ten thousand babies”. She also published medical research on care for women and children, which helped improve the medical level. And she trained many doctors, passing on her knowledge and skills.
T: Very comprehensive. What about Group 2?
S21: She opened a private clinic during the war to help people in need, especially the poor. After the founding of New China, she held important positions and played a key role in promoting medical development in our country.
T: Good. From her life story, what qualities do you think Lin Qiaozhi had?
S22: She was kind, because she cared about poor patients and reduced their costs.
S23: She was responsible, as she always put the patients first and was committed to her work.
S24: She was determined. She made up her mind to study medicine and never gave up, even facing difficulties.
T: All of you are right. Lin Qiaozhi had many noble qualities. Now, let’s think about ourselves. How can we learn from her in our daily lives? For example, in our studies or when we interact with others. Discuss with your deskmate.
联系自身,思考启发
(Students discuss)
T: Let’s hear some of your thoughts. The boy in the last row.
S25: In our studies, we should be as determined as her. When we encounter difficulties, we shouldn’t give up easily, just like she didn’t give up on her dream of studying medicine.
S26: When we interact with others, we should be kind and helpful, just like she treated her patients.
T: Wonderful. Lin Qiaozhi’s story is really inspiring. Now, let’s do a quick review of what we have learned today. Who can briefly summarize the main points of the passage?
S27: We learned about the life of Lin Qiaozhi. She chose to study medicine despite opposition. She had a successful career, made great contributions in the medical field, and had many good qualities.
T: Perfect. For homework, I want you to write a short passage about Lin Qiaozhi, introducing her life and your feelings after learning about her. It should be at least 150 words. Also, think about one moral or virtue that you want to improve in yourself and write a plan on how to do it. That’s all for today’s class. See you next time!
