2025年八年级英语暑假作业1 姓名:__________ 班级:__________ 考号:__________ 一、阅读理解 Trained rats could help fight against the multi-billion-dollar illegal wildlife trade by using their heightened sense of smell to catch trafficked animal products. The non-profit organisation APOPO already uses southern giant pouched rats to sniff for landmines in post-conflict zones and to detect tuberculosis. Now, Isabelle Szott, Kate Webb and their colleagues at APOPO have tested the ability of the pouched rats to detect four commonly trafficked items from endangered species: rhino horn, elephant ivory, pangolin scales and African blackwood. Between 2015 and 2021, rhinos, pangolins and elephants accounted for 73 percent of wildlife trafficking seizures (没收物) by authorities. The rats could detect the illegal materials hidden in containers and packages even when they were masked by other scents (气味), with false alarms below 2 percent. The illegal wildlife trade is one of the leading causes of the biodiversity crisis, but dealing with it is costly and politically challenging, especially across international borders. Current methods to prevent wildlife trafficking, such as screening shipping containers with X-rays at crowded ports, are also expensive and difficult to be widely used. The researchers say that sniffer rats offer an alternative, low-cost way to prevent international wildlife trafficking networks. “The rats have particular skill sets that can make an excellent complement to the present screening tools,” says Webb. “They can be easily transferred between trainers, and they are small enough to be lifted onto containers and move in tight spaces. They also have an average lifespan of eight years, but we have rats as old as eleven years in retirement.” “Employing rats to prevent wildlife trafficking may help the global fight against networks that take advantage of humans and nature,” says Szott. 1.What makes trained rats particularly suitable for detecting wildlife products? A. They are easy to carry. B. They can run fast and hide easily. C. They can catch animals. D. They have improved sense of smell. 2.What was the result of the test on the pouched rats? A. They defeated the screening tools. B. They gave false alarms frequently. C. They detected 73% of the wildlife seizures. D. They effectively detected the hidden things. 3.What is the advantage of using sniffer rats over current methods? A. Sniffer rats can be used at ports. B. Sniffer rats help reduce the cost. C. Sniffer rats can solve the wildlife problems. D. Sniffer rats can remove political challenges across borders. 4.What is the main idea of the text? A. Trained rats can remove biodiversity crisis. B. Trained rats can protect endangered species. C. Trained rats will replace the current screening tools. D. Trained rats can sniff out illegal wildlife trafficking. Researchers have long known there are benefits from being in nature. Living around trees can help you live longer. Walking in the woods is good for your mood. Being near water can have positive effects on your well-being. A new study finds that natural sounds offer health benefits too. There is plenty of evidence that spending time in natural areas is good for our health — but typically this research is done from a visual perspective, but we are curious what the role is of sounds we hear in these spaces. Some examples they found reported in those studies included decreased pain, lowered stress, improved mood, and better cognitive (认知的) function. With these results in hand, they then listened to audio recordings from 251 sites in 68 national parks across the United States. The sites with the most natural sounds and the lowest man-made sounds were located in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest and were far from urban areas. Only three locations with high natural sounds and low noise pollution were within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of urban areas. However, despite human-made noises being heard most of the time at sites in urban locations, birds were still heard about 60% of the time and geophysical sounds like wind and rain heard about 19% of the time. Not all natural sounds deliver the same benefits, the researchers found. For example, they discovered that the sounds of water had the largest impact on improving positive emotions and health outcomes, while bird sounds ease stress and annoyance. And the sounds of both birds and water were heard more than 23% of the time in the national park recording sites. Interestingly, there was also some evidence that natural sounds have benefits over silence. There was also evidence that more different types of natural sounds — more types of birds singing rather than just one type of bird— have benefits over fewer sounds. 8.What does the new study focus on? A. The effect natural sounds have on health. B. The harm man-made sounds do to health. C. The benefits natural sounds bring to the environment. D. The effect nature has on people from visual perspective. 9.What is an ideal site according to paragraph 4? A. It is away from cities. B. It has no noise pollution. C. It has bird songs most of the time. D. It is within 62 miles of urban areas. 10.What brings more benefits to people? A. The silence of nature. B. The sounds of water. C. The diversity of natural sounds. D. Natural sounds mixed with noises. 11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. It Is Beneficial to Live Close to Water B. We Are Surrounded by All Kinds of Sounds C. The Sounds of Nature Affect Your Well-being D. Man-made Noise Pollution Is Harmful to Our Health Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings. Bosch, a microbiologist, said that she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to repair artworks. At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother, Pilar Roig, was struggling to find a good method for repairing 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artist Antonio Palomino, sat in Santos Juanes—one of the oldest churches in the city of Valencia. Pilar Roig noted how difficult the repair process at the church was. One reason was the glue (胶水) used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. The glue was nearly impossible to remove completely. “My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean paintings on walls in Italy,” Bosch said. Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church repair. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The $4.46 million project is being financed by local organizations. To repair, they feed small amounts of the glue that was made from animal collagen (胶原蛋白) to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begin to naturally produce enzymes (酶) to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel (凝胶), and places it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free. Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, people working on repairing artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that took hours and damaged the painting. Bosch is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti. 12.How did Bosch find the way to repair old paintings? A. Her mother inspired her. B. Her doctor instructed her. C. She tested it out by many experiments. D. She found it when preparing her paper. 13.What made it difficult to repair the old paintings? A. Not having enough money. B. The history of the churches. C. The glue that was once used. D. Experience of past failures. 14.What is paragraph 4 centered on? A. The process of cleaning the paintings. B. The necessity of repaıring the paintings. C. The challenges facing the mother-daughter team. D. The materials that are used to clean the paintings. 15.Which can be the best title for the text? A. Bacteria Removal Process Is Widely Used in Spain. B. Spanish Scientist Uses Bacteria to Repair Artworks. C. Old Artworks Are Likely to Be Repaired with Bacteria. D. Spanish Mother-Daughter Team Discovered A Painting.
