I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost — having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
4. How did the author get to know America?
A. From her relatives. B. From her mother.
C. From books and pictures. D. From radio.
5. Upon leaving for America the author felt ______.
A. confused B. excited C. worried D. amazed
6. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
A. She worked as a translator B. She attended a lot of job interviews
C. She paid telephone bills for her family D. She helped her family with her English
7. The author believes that ______.
A. her future will be free from troubles B. it is difficult to learn to become patient
C. there are more good things than bad things D. good things will happen if one keeps trying.
C
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have made an interesting discovery that could change our understanding of how to improve memory. Led by Professor Emma Reynolds, the team conducted a series of experiments exploring the association between memory enhancement (改善) and music.
In their study, participants (参与者) were divided into two groups. The first group listened to classical music while performing memory tasks such as remembering lists of words and numbers. The second group, serving as the control, completed the same tasks in silence. The results were astonishing.
“We found that those who listened to music during the memory tasks performed obviously (明显地) better than those who didn’t,” explained Professor Reynolds. “Not only did they recall more items correctly, but they also showed a faster recall rate.”
“Music seems to create an optimal state of mind for memory formation.” Professor Reynolds continued. “It appears to happen at the same time with brain waves, making it easier for the brain to encode and later recover information.”
To ensure the findings were strong, the research team repeated the experiments with different age groups and cultural backgrounds. Consistently, they observed the same pattern: music, especially classical music, obviously improved memory performance.
“This discovery has great potential for applications in education, healthcare, and even everyday life,” noted Dr. John Smith, a co-author of the study. “Imagine students using music to enhance their study sessions or patients recovering from brain injuries using it to aid their recovery.”
However, the researchers cautioned against overgeneralizing the results. “While the benefits of music are clear, it’s important to note that everyone’s response to music is unique,” said Professor Reynoids. “Finding the right type and tempo of music that works best for each individual is key.”
8. What was the primary purpose of the experiments conducted by the team?
A. To find a cure for memory loss.
B. To prove that classical music is superior to other genres.
C. To find the connection between music and memory improvement.
D. To compare the memory performance of different age groups.
9. According to Professor Reynolds, what does music do to the brain during memory tasks?
A. It constantly increases harmful stress levels.
B. It has no significant impact on brain activity.
C. It reduces the brain’s cognitive ability to focus intently.
D. It helps your brain waves work together, making it easier to remember and recall things.
10. How did the team carry out their study?
A. By making a comparison. B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving an example. D. By quoting an expert.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A travel magazine. B. A science journal about the brain.
C. A story. D. A history textbook.
D
Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing (治愈的) effect on people.
According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic (慢性病的) diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster.
When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.
This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life.
12. Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe” in paragraph 2?
A. Suggest. B. Provide. C. Practice. D. Explore.
13. What is the function of paragraph 2?
A. To explain an idea. B. To provide evidence.
C. To make a conclusion. D. To lead in the topic.
14. How does nature help people according to the two major theories?
A. It improves their creativity. B. It helps them focus and reduce stress.
C. It betters their living environments. D. It makes their social skills stronger.
15. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. It is not easy to get in nature. B. Most patients prefer nature treatment.
C. Nature treatment is still unpopular. D. Doctors shouldn’t recommend nature to patients.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a busy city, an old man rode his tricycle (三轮脚踏车) along the street. His face was full of the lines of time. His hands held the handlebars with care. He was returning home from the market, and his tricycle was filled with fresh produce.
When he was wondering how much he could sell the produce for, he got distracted (思想不集中的) and the tricycle hit a car which was parked by the roadside. The old man’s heart sank as he surveyed the long scratch (划痕) damaging the new paintwork of the expensive car. He stood there with worry and regret on his face. He knew the value of such a car and the potential cost of the damage. “I can’t afford this,” he whispered to himself sadly.
Just then, a stranger approached the old man. The stranger, dressed in a sharp suit, looked at the scene and immediately realized the situation. “The paintwork is damaged. Can you afford to pay for the damage?” he asked gently. The old man shook his head and looked down. “No, I can’t,” he replied.
The stranger looked around and spoke in a low tone. “If you can’t afford it, why don’t you leave? Do you wait for the owner to come?” It was more of a suggestion than a question. A small smile appeared on the stranger’s mouth.
The old man hesitated, torn between his sense of responsibility and the practicality of the stranger’s advice. After a moment of internal struggle, he made his decision. He pulled an old plastic bag out of his pocket. He put all the money inside, which was less than twenty dollars, under the wiper (雨刷) of the car. Then, he felt the scratch on the car with his hands. With one last look at the damaged car, he began to push his tricycle away, glancing back every few steps.

After the old man went away, the stranger took out a car key.

After the old man went away, the stranger took out a car key. With a press of a button, the car door opened. The stranger sat in the seat, silent for a moment before remembering all the money under the wiper. He knew it was the old man’s hard-earned money from a day’s work. So he wanted to return the money to him. Then he started the car and drove in the direction the old man had left. Within a few minutes, he caught up with the old man.
The stranger pulled over, got out of the car and waved to the old man. The old man recognized him and stopped. The old man was shocked as he saw that the car in front of him was the one he had hit. The stranger walked towards the old man and said, “I am actually the owner of this car. Your sincerity and sense of responsibility have infected me. I must return the money to you. You have left a heavier mark on my heart than the scratch on the car.” After saying that, the stranger put the money on the old man’s tricycle and drove away.
